Songs that tug at your heart

We all have a song or two, or 5,000 that makes us happy or sad, and maybe even bring us to tears. These songs can be as such because of the memories they spark, or simply because of how beautiful they are to us. So, why not post them here, maybe get a happy cry out of it while you're at it. Here are two that really move me.

That is, without a doubt my favorite Kingdom Hearts song of all time and stirs a lot of emotions in me.

This one, just makes me feel a lot, not because I'm sad, or because I'm happy or anything, but simply because it's such a beautiful song. Piano is my favorite instrument, and this is my favorite song that I've ever heard played on it.

Speaking of Clannad...

[spoiler=The Place Where Wishes Come True II]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZxVc7_SufY

This one is more effective for me when watching the anime, particularly during the end of the Fuko arc, when Okazaki and Nagisa remember Fuko (it's at 0:53 of the video).

Then there's this:

[spoiler=Shining in the Sky (Vocal Version)]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVEC6QxPlTU

I actually prefer the vocal version of Shining in the Sky, but that's just me. :P

Aside from Clannad, what I really want to post about is the theme songs of Hourou Musuko, an anime of which its story already tugs at your heart, albeit in a more lighthearted manner:

[spoiler=Itsudatte]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQbATlvdD1A

[spoiler=For You]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJGB2r0Wy14

When a song starts with "I wanna cry for you", you know there's going to be tears. xD But honestly, both the OP and ED exuberates more innocence than melancholy. Unlike Clannad, that reminds you just how depressing everything is, I feel Hourou Musuko and its themes are trying to show the guileless and childlike nature of those characters in spite of the mature theme of cross-dressing being the focus. There's just something very emotional when kids are exposed to adult themes like these, but ignore all the drama and conflict that comes with cross-dressing prejudice and just play around in their own innocent little closed bubble. It's heartwarming, and I feel like that OP and ED portray this feeling very well, especially the ED.

[spoiler=Digimon Adventure - Kanashimi]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkw-iUFtUx4

Before Clannad came along, in my childhood, Digimon Adventure really ripped my heart out with this scene. Even watching it today as an adult, I still get a bit teary. :'( Little did my 7 year old self know, there were more deaths and hardships to come.

Have to double-post because of the "five media per post" limit:

There's another unreleased track here that also tugs at my heart:

[spoiler=Pumpmon and Gotsumon's demise]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p5Nm_BAez4

This was played after the death of two other characters, Pumpmon and Gotsumon, when Yamato and Takeru looked back at the places those two guileless Digimon once fooled around in. It's scenes like this that really set Digimon apart from Pokemon because it reminded the audience just what the stakes were when the good guys lose.

[spoiler=Seven (Acoustic Version)]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2t0Uhwv-10

Ah yes, Seven. The acoustic version lacks the happy-go-lucky nature of the original version. I think this is a more appropriate and effective version, particularly when you consider the line, "seven try to be free", as in trying to break free of all these deaths and despair thrust upon them. Yet another song that speaks of how depressing Digimon Adventure can be at times. lol

Last and definitely not least...

[spoiler=Butterfly (Theater Version)]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpq2q0qf2e8

That moment. When Mimi's hat flies out. Song plays. God, the tears. It's why I often associate Mimi's hat as one of the definitive icons of Digimon Adventure. xD And what an amazing ending this was for a fantastic season. It's just one reason why season 1 of Digimon was that memorable for me.

Speaking of memorable Digimon seasons...

[spoiler=Digimon Tamers - Promise of the Setting Sun]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THpC-pf_IdM

This season was unsurprisingly a lot more bleak than the first season. Characters don't necessarily get happy endings (merely bittersweet ones), and this song represents well the constant melancholy of the show. In the scene above from the second Digimon Tamers movie, Ruki was possessed by a parasitic Digimon and was forced to remember some bitter memories, specifically the dirtbag father that left her and her mum. I remember this one fondly because even at the end of the movie, you'd see her looking towards the sun by her lonesome - at her very own birthday party, away from the others. Her father wasn't there. There was no optimistic scene where she reunites with him. Nothing schmaltzy like that. It was realistic, much like the rest of Digimon Tamers, and it didn't need to be "dark and gritty" to achieve that emotional resonance. Amazing season.

Finally, Detective Conan also has its share of tearful OSTs:

[spoiler=Conan's Theme (Sad Version, Vocal)]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NdcUtahcEI

The anime loves to play this one during a criminal confession. On very rare occasion, when the confession is particularly sympathetic and isn't just another cliched villain motivation, that soundtrack above becomes very effective and tearjerking. I feel like this was more frequent in the earlier episodes of Conan, like the first 100 or 200 episodes.

More double-posting (triple-posting?) of emotional osts!

[spoiler=Conan's Theme (Sad Version, Sax)]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgTlhRLTox8

This is another version of Conan's theme that I posted earlier. Katsuo Ohno loves to have different variations of the same soundtrack, not that it is a bad thing. This one also plays during some of the more sorrowful criminal confessions. I like both versions of the confession theme, so it's hard to pick one.

[spoiler=Detective Conan Movie 3: Ai Wa Itsumo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm4khBiai4o

Iori is known to have sung some of my most favorite emotional OSTs. This one played in movie 3 of DC, when Conan was forced to confess to Ran his true identity after seeing Ran crying her eyes out about whether if Conan was Shinichi or not. The same song was also played in my favorite scene in the TV series, when Vermouth was trying to kill Haibara, but Ran protected her instead. Vermouth then remembers that time when both Ran and Shinichi saved her life. You can see how the entire scene plays out

. That scene in the TV series was just a whole bundle of turbulent emotions played out between three characters: Ran who's trying to protect Haibara, Haibara who's reminded of her dead older sister when Ran protects her, and Vermouth who doesn't want to kill Ran because she has saved her before. It was easily one of the most well-written scenes in the anime, and the soundtrack really helped made the scene much more emotional.

Of course, we can't talk about heartfelt songs that tug at your heart without mentioning the tearjerking Steins;Gate...

[spoiler=Believe Me]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rYI2eG3DuQ

Such a powerful song that resonates the despair of Okabe as he struggles through worldline after worldline while witnessing Mayuri's death over and over again. Depressing.

[spoiler=Farewell]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAZSrrVk1TE

Another song that's difficult to listen to without tearing up, particularly when it was played during the reading of Suzuha's letter. I cri evrytiem during that scene. It was just so depressing and devoid of hope. Even after that scene, when it's played during Okabe's dilemma of whether to reverse the happiness the D-mail has brought to the other characters, it's still just as emotional. I still feel really bad for Faris.

Interesting enough, for an anime that's filled with so much slice of life humor at the beginning, one might be surprised at how bleak and gut-punching the story can be.

If we're talking anime songs, speed of flow radio carberretor gintama, 19 SAI xxxholic, normal song/ mushishi shiver by lucy rose,

Normal music tons: Spanish Sahara by foals, renegade by kings of convenience, Angel by massive attack, river man nick drake, dark eyes by half moon run, talking to a stranger by hunters and collectors under one roof, wishers by twinemen, little lionman Mumford Sons, Along the watchtower Jimi Hendrix, Every single soul by Michael Franti and a fuckton more, I'll save you the inconvenience, that's probably pretty overbearing already.

We all have a song or two, or 5,000 that makes us happy or sad, and maybe even bring us to tears. These songs can be as such because of the memories they spark, or simply because of how beautiful they are to us. So, why not post them here, maybe get a happy cry out of it while you're at it. This one, just makes me feel a lot, not because I'm sad, or because I'm happy or anything, but simply because it's such a beautiful song. Piano is my favorite instrument, and this is my favorite song that I've ever heard played on it.

Oh god, most songs from KH tug at my heart. Good choice.

As for me, there's plenty of music that tugs at me but I guess I'll just start out with a few that come to mind right in this moment...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utXF0PGPD3Q

For me, Sakura Nagashi is one of those songs that literally brings me to tears when I listen to it. It is hard to explain, but between the music and te lyrics, I find it hard not to cry when I hear it.

"No matter how frightening it is, I won't look away

if there is love at the end of everything."

Another Utada Hikaru song, this one really makes me feel a lot. I have been listening to it for years now.

"Still, when you thank me,

It seems somewhat painful

And the magic that comes after we say goodbye

Leaves traces of the bittersweet.

This is the flavour of life."

Going to throw it back to my younger days when MCR was the most relateable thing I had going for me. This song makes me cry.

Sleeping at Last seriously has an array of music that literally tugs at my heart strings. But this is one of my personal favorites.

If you know me, then you know Journey is one of my favorite bands of all time. This song literally murders my soul. It's one of my absolute favorite love ballads and I can play this on loop.
