@Animedragon I was thinking about you earlier and had a question for ya! When you were working in the printing industry, did you ever get to see anything really weird that customers had ordered??

I finished off a few zines today and the subject of one of them was….quite something. We’ve had plenty of strange things during my time working here, but I think this one might top all of them haha! Anywho, it got me curious about what sort of print jobs you would have seen back in the day  

I once had a week of butts. One of the jobs was a bunch of posters for period safe lingerie, another one was a birthday card with a butt on the front, there was also a small spiral bound book with some sort of story and the front cover was a picture of the author and two of her friends taken from behind and buck naked, plus a couple other things in that same week that also had butts of some kind on them

Anyone here ever read 50 Shades? Anywho, for those unaware, the two main characters make some sort of sexual/bdsm contract or some shit. We once had someone come in with a file to get printed and it was a fucking real life bdsm contract between them and their partner ahaha. It was a shock at the time, I hope they’re doing well  

The zines I finished off today I won’t share what the subject matter is, but every time she orders them I have to stand out front while they’re printing so that I can make sure no other customers in the store can see them (we have a long, narrow space, so our main press is actually out front in the store where we sell art supplies). 
 

Gosh, there’s been so many other things too, not sexual, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head at the moment haha

Yaaaa lmfao ~ @Sarada ended up going through a lot of old movies from 70/80s and putting them on the list, that's why. A lot of ones I'd never heard of but they've actually been pretty good.

I’ve never been able to handle watching any of the Chucky movies, they scare the shit out of me. But I also used to collect porcelain dolls and some of the collector holiday Barbies (had around 50 porcelain dolls by the time I got rid of them), so the thought of dolls coming to life has always been way too freaky for me haha

I used to not like Chucky at all because dolls scare me and I still don't but I did manage to sit through one of the movies which I'm proud of myself for XD

I’ve seen the first one and bride of chucky, as well as parts from others, but that was a long time ago and they gave me nightmares haha

It sounds like you have some, er, "interesting" jobs from your customers.

I worked in an in-house print unit so all my customers were company employees not members of the public so most of the stuff I printed was boring old company reports and such like. Some of the training manuals were interesting especially when I worked for the telecommunications company, but there was little of interest when I worked for a finance type company.

That's not to say there weren't some interesting experiences. At one time we were a combined print and mail room operation and one day while I was printing a document for a guy he asked for a same day courier as the document had to be with his client by 5pm that day, this was at about 3pm, so I called the mail room supervisor over who asked the guy where he wanted the document delivered, to which the guy gave an address in Rio de Janeiro! He was furious when told that it wasn't possible to deliver a document from England to Brazil in two hours!

Then there was the person who sent a job down 5 minutes before the start of their meeting and got quite annoyed when told they couldn't have it in 5 minutes. I had to carefully explain that my machine could print 50 copies a minute and as their document had 50 pages it would take 1 minute to print 1 copy and as they wanted 30 copies it would take 30 minutes to print the job. They didn't quite grasp this and asked me if I could try and print it quicker.

Christmas time was fun because the company sent out boxes of chocolates to some of its customers, we printed the address labels and helped the mail room guys with the packaging. The company always bought too many boxes of chocs and we got to keep the left overs

Haha I guess that’s one of the differences between printing for the public or not! Most of the stuff we do is boring old business stuff for other companies, but yeah definitely some interesting other jobs as well.

Omg! I actually had a lady hang up on me on Monday because she wanted a last minute print job (she left ALL of her presentation materials at home and she’s from out of town), and was honestly expecting to call us, send the file, and pick it up in 5min. I told her the soonest I could have it ready was in half hour to an hour and she got angry at me and said, “well that’s not good enough!” and hung up on me lmfao!!! Get bent, lady, maybe next time she’ll make sure she actually has her presentation materials the next time she’s travelling for a presentation?? There is another print shop in town, but I can almost guarantee that they told her to get bent, they’re nowhere near as nice to their customers as we are   (actually, we’ve been hearing loooots of complaints about them lately, we think they might be trying to focus more on their big jobs and brushing off all the piddly shit)

Hahaha I always love the, “can’t you just try anyway?” Do I look like a miracle worker??

 

One of my favourite conversations I overhear out front on a regular basis is basically

”I’ve come to pick up my order”

”did you get an email that it’s ready?”

”no but,”

”you’ll get an email when it’s ready, come back then”

”but it’s just”

”they’re busy in the back and have other customers ahead of you. You’ll get an email when your job is ready, goodbye!”

At this point most people are dissuaded and leave to wait for confirmation that their order is ready, but we get the odd one that is absolutely determined to see how long it will take which usually gets me involved into the conversation and then they get to hear a cheerful, extremely vague answer, “Should be sometime today! I’ll send you an email as soon as it’s ready!” 
“when today?”

”whenever I have a chance to do it, goodbye!”
