1. I agree with you there, sometimes the dub is quite truthful, however they are tied down by the animation, as what they can say, so have to change things, and sometimes this means that they write something similar, but could infer other things that haven't been mentioned in the original, so may not be true! Actually, on the subject of 4Kids goofs, didn't they kill off Brock's mother, only to have her comeback in a later series?
2. Unless it's misleading, there's a series called "Steampunk Detectives", nope, wait, I stand corrected, "Steam Detectives", don't know if it involves steam punk, I also don't know I think Ling Ling might have something to do with steampunk! I am confusing the title with the movie "Steampunk"! On the subject of Steampunk, I'd say that R.O.D: Read or Die has some, same for Last Exile, Gadguard (well main character's mecha has a bit of steampunk look going on), Samurai Gun has steampunk for one or two episodes, and Samurai 7's a bit steampunk, is it not? On the subject of other mecha series, I remembered about Burst Angel (in which three of the characters Meg, Amy and Jo share their names with characters from "Little Women"), and Heroman (I'm sure I've seen Lina Davies elsewhere) if you want mecha with an American flare, and cameo by "Stan Lee", as he was the one who thought of the series!
3. I can be particular about my art styles, though series I've passed on because of the art style aren't coming to mind! However anything too unappealing ("scruffy" art style), I wouldn't watch, or read, if it was a manga! XEBEC comes to my mind, with Negima!, however when I look at their art style in Ladies versus Butlers, it's completely different, very round and soft, unless that's because Selenia Flameheart and co. are round and soft ! I have watched bits of Cyborg 009 from the 60s and Cutey Honey from 70s, so it's not like it's a year thing, although art styles do change with time, so Cyborg 009 and Cutey Honey might be exceptions to the standard art style of those times! To pick up on something you mention in your first post, I was watching Digimon Savers recently, and notice that for a couple of episodes, the animation received an upgrade (for fanservice?), if I have time, I'll see if I can post some snaps, maybe!
4. I recommend RahXephon, I see it as the "better" version of Evangelion; I recommend watching the series to RahXephon over the movie, but that's my preference, both tell relatively the same story, but the movie's more condensed, and has an alternate ending! That said, Rebuild of Evangelion is changing my opinion of Evangelion, that said, 2.22 anyway, 1.11 was basically the same as the corresponding episodes of the series, I think 3.33 still hasn't been released here, in the UK, but I'd have to check! If you want some crazy mecha, there's Diebuster (Gunbuster 2/Aim for the Top), which features a girl called Nono aiming to be Topless (an elite pilot), or GadGuard (kid stumbles across an "unawakened" mecha, and fights crime, or I think that was the plan); Diebuster's predecessor Gunbuster is more grounded, although a scene with Noriko inspired the trope "Gainaxing"! If you want something super-sentai (and fanservice), there's Gravion, Dangaioh, Godannar, Daigard, Maizangar (or however it's spelt), and Gun x Sword (for a couple of episodes, the super-sentai bit I'm referring to)! I've still gotta get round to watching Majestic Prince at somepoint! I'm sure I thought of another one, ah yes, Betterman, oh, and if you're into the idea of Steampunk Mecha, there's Sakura Wars, for some of the stories the mecha feature very little! I'm just trying to way up other series now, as to whether they're mecha or not; Divergence Eve, Full Metal Panic! (can't remember how much mecha was in that now), Suisei no Gargantia, FLCL and Martian Successor Nadesico! I'm sure I know more, but those are the only ones I can think of, off the top of my head!
5. Oh 4Kids, how you put your foot in things, or opened yourself up for ridicule! A friend told me how they removed an iceberg from One Piece, that would make a key appearance later on, and as for ridicule, I only need to cite the fact that for (I think) when something isn't backed up by the original version, Bulbapedia has a picture of Brock and some oni-giri, saying "Who wants a doughnut?", and Team Four Star with "Look I'm drinking beer" *ping - changes colour* "now it's orange juice"! I didn't watch a lot of the abridged parodies, but I've seen some, like for Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Tea/Anzu being a kleptomaniac! You've just reminded me of Virtue's Last Reward, similar type of game, that has a dub, but well, only in America (and maybe Australia), however because the Europeans might complain, we in the UK got a sub-only version, alternatively it might have been that the European distributor didn't want to pay to buy the dub! I'm not complaining, I mean I got to hear Yukari Tamura as Clover, Mamiko Noto as Luna and Atsuko Tanaka as Alice, so that was a win! Seen as Zero Time Dilemma is being localised along side its development, it's possible we'll end up with a dub track instead of sub this time, which will be interesting, as first game, no voices (although I did assign characters voices, like Clover, who I assigned the voice of "Tori Meadows" (Kotori Mizuki) in Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal dub, and I'd only listened to it, once or twice)
6. It's pretty cool I must say, the text snippet gives you a bit of information as to what the thread's about, and the images are like sweets being offered from the window of that man's white van (sorry, I can be random sometimes), they can pique your interest in the thread further, enticing you to click on the thread!

Dorama

Not sure Chit Chat feels like the right place for it, but couldn't see anywhere else! So, does anyone else watch Dorama? I'm technically referring to Dorama based on an anime, manga and/or light novel, however this can be extended to original Dorama too, I would probably watch original Dorama too, but would mean having to find the time to identify what I'd want to watch! I stumbled across an interesting anime from 1982 (The Kabocha Wine), and whilst reading about it, I learned that a live action had been made for the third manga (The Kabocha Wine - Another) - I wouldn't mind watching it, but can't find any links for it, heck even AsianWiki doesn't believe it exists, as no hits come back from "kabocha"!
Shunsuke feels that his masculinity is in danger, his family owns a lingerie store, so feels the only to save his masculinity is to transfer to a boys only school! He turns up for his first day of school, only to find it closed, a girl jumps down from a tree, and informs him that the school is closed for a holiday, and that she attends this school! Confused by this, the girl explains that the school has be come co-ed since last year! The girl introduces herself as Natsumi, but is usually referred to as Eru (L), standing up, it is revealed what L alludes to, she is quite tall! Still, there are Dorama that I have watched: You're Under Arrest, Cutey Honey (movie), xxxHOLiC, Cutey Honey the Live, Space Battleship Yamato, Saishuu Heiki Kanojo (She, the Ultimate Weapon/Saikano), Death Note Trilogy, a couple episodes of Negima!!, one episode of Death Note (2015), and although it's not technically a Dorama, Persona 4 Visualive!
You're Under Arrest - is set over nine episodes, mainly revolve around the love lives of police partners, Miyuki and Natsumi, with the latter receiving a dorama only love interest in replace of the one (or two?) in the series; Cutey Honey (movie) - something that Hideaki Anno actually gets right for a change, hilarious, and very stylised computer generated effects, starring Eriko Sato as Honey Kisaragi; xxxHOLiC - covers a couple of events from series one and two of the anime, although merges some of the arcs together such as the second arc featuring Zashiki Warashi, and Himawari's arc; Cutey Honey the Live - a kind of prequel to even the original manga/anime, set over twenty-five, it features Cutey Honey before she "became" Cutey Honey, Mikie Hara stars as Honey Kisaragi; Space Battleship Yamato - a movie that possibly sticks quite close to the original version of Space Battleship Yamato, given that there's not a great female representation amongst the crew (as with 2199), although there is a female doctor, possibly serving as a replacement for Harada Makoto and the ship's doctor; Saishuu Heiki Kanojo - a movie about a boy, Shuji, and a girl, Chise that have just started dating, however Chise is soon approached by the JDSF as she is apparently compatible for a program they have started, like the anime (and manga) it's depressing; Death Note Trilogy - the first two movies follow Light as he has a battle in the shadows against L, as to who will find out the other's identity first, whilst the third movie follows L's final days; Negima!! - based on the original anime (and manga), although with less fanservice (however Shizuna-sensei and the ecchi situations revolving around her remain), and borrows the occasional thing from Negima!? ("Sasaki Makie fails at life" *ga~n*), follows child teacher, Negi Springfield as he takes charge of Class 2-A, with a variety of characters from brash Asuka, to bookish Nodoka; Death Note (2015) - same as the movie trilogy above, it follows Light and L as they battle in the shadows, in a fight to find out the other's identify first; Persona 4 Visualive - follows Persona 4 up to the completion of the "Retro" Dungeon, featuring Narukami Yuu (Seita Yuuya in this), Hanamura Yousuke, Satonaka Chie, Amagi Yukiko, Tatsumi Kanji, Doujima, Adachi, Mitsuo Kubo, Kou and Daisuke, Ebihara Ai, "Morokin", the Moel Attendant, minor appearances by Konishi Saki and "Funky Student", and voice appearances of Kujikawa Rise and Teddie, and features some original content! I need to schedule another watch of You're Under Arrest at somepoint, it's been a while since I've watched it! Although HOLiC was good, I was disappointed that they needed to make a "physical" villain for the Hydrangea episode, and how the second arc featuring Zashiki Warashi, and Himawari's arc were merged together, but then, I wasn't a fan of those episodes in HOLiC: Kei either, they rushed them too much; why was Kei only 12 episodes, not 24? As I said, Saishuu Heiki Kanojo was depressing, but given that the material it was based on was depressing, I don't know why I decided to watch it, you really wish you could prevent the JDSF ever approaching Chise, but then you would be taking away mankind's only hope! It's interesting how similar Negima!! is to the original material, although I would have liked it better if Chamo had been a CG rodent, rather than a CG patch on Negi's jacket; was Luna in Sailor Moon Live that bad that it was decided such a thing should never be done again? Watching the first episode of Death Note (2015), I started to notice how it, and the original Death Note Trilogy differ from the original material, when comparing the two, I feel the series works on getting the event details right (first victim, a biker, although he's a school delinquent, rather than harrassing a woman), whilst the movies get the "thing" details right (the layout of Light's room, etc.), I also feel that the movie cast is a little more visually "impressive" than the series cast! With Persona 4 Visualive, I think some of the voices are better than their original game/anime counterparts, although this may be based on the fact that we only got the dub voices for the games, and thus hearing the original voices in the anime, they didn't feel right, and then when hearing the voices in this, and them sounding "like" the dub voices, decide that they are "better" than the original game/anime voices! There are a couple of others I'm aware of, but not watched: Tokyo Babylon, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Densha Otaku, Sailor Moon, Tennen Kajuu Sayaka, Peach Girl, Good Morning Call, Another, Mirai Nikki, Ouran High School Host Club, Black Butler (I think), GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka, Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo, and although technically not dorama, Sakura Wars!
Tokyo Babylon - Subaru Sumeragi discovers a project by a deceased enemy involving seven teenage girls, including Kurumi to be taught in using dark magic, only with the help of his friend-turned-enemy Seishirou Sakurazaki, which is only possible due to the pleas of his deceased sister, Hokuto, can he stop this project; The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - at least two versions exist, that I know of, revolving around Kazuko Yoshiyama, who stumbles across the ability to travel through time, our protagonist is the aunt of Makoto Konno, the protagonist of the anime; Densha Otaku - 23 year old otaku intervenes when a drunk man starts harrassing women on the train, the otaku starts to date one of the women, who is subsequently known as "Hermes", again there's at least two versions of this too, actually learnt about it because of Getsumen to Heiki Miina, where Mina Tsukuda is part of "Rabbit Force", a team responsible for the policing the Earth from sports loving aliens; Tennen Kajuu Sayaka - Tsuzumi Sayaka wants to be a 'normal' high school girl, but she has a dirty mind that gets her constantly aroused, she has to fight becoming aroused in any situation, even in teaching some supplemental lessons for her peers or trying out the judo club; Good Morning Call - when her father moves back home to take over the family farm, Nao Yoshikawa remains behind, to finish the final semester of junior high, however discovers that her appartment has been double-rented, the landlady suggests that she and Hisashi Uehara can just live together, as the rent would be cheaper; Sakura Wars - stage shows featuring the seiyuu of Imperial Floral Assault Unit (Shinguji Sakura, Kanzaki Sumire, Iris Chateaubriand, Ri Kohran, Karishima Kanna, Tachibana Maria), Paris Assault Unit (Erica Fontaine, Glycine Bleumer, Coquelicot and Kitaoji Hanabi), or New York Combat Revue (Gemini Sunrise, Sagitta Weinberg, Diana Caprice, Rikaritta Ares and Kujo Subaru)! Not had any luck tracking down Tokyo Babylon yet, and I was surprised that Good Morning Call had got a live action, it's actually recent, currently being released as a "Netflix Original"! I need to get round to seeing if I can watch Sakura Wars, the live shows; I've played the first game (well muddled through, in Japanese) and So Long my Memories, and watched all of the anime, I think! Now I'm going to move onto up and comming, it appears that Death Note in AMERICA, is finally getting started, apparently Warner Bros. were almost ready to start the project, when they decided to drop it, it has since transferred to Netflix, with Nat Wolff being cast as Light! If you don't know Nat Wolff is, neither did I, until I went onto imdb, he was in Paper Towns, and Paulo Alto, neither of which I've seen, but him being in Palo Alto might be the reason as to why (Sarah) Margaret Qualley was cast as Misa, she too was in Palo Alto! I rememebr when they were talking about having Zac Effron as Light! It also seems that like with Death Note, we can't have too many Cutey Honey live actions, with Cutey Honey - Tears on the way, Mariya Nishiuchi taking over the role of Honey Kisaragi! Next I'll look at the live actions that have not been, such as Clover (CLAMP), Full Metal Panic!, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bubblegum Crisis 2041 and Akira (not writing one for trash)!
Clover (CLAMP): A four-leaf clover is not something that can be anyone's, if a four-leaf begins to consider someone precious to them, it is the same as saying that the world is in the hands of he who is thought of that way, that is why the four-leaf clover is left alone, Su is a four-leaf clover, someone who seemingly has a magical ability to manipulate technology; Full Metal Panic!: Sousuke Sagara, a member of a covert anti-terrorist private military organisation, and tasked with protecting a high school girl, Kaname Chidori, who like his captain, Teletha "Tessa" Testarossa, is an Awakened, so this means he's going to school, something he's not done before, meaning this covert private soldier has to act like a student, and not do anything that will arouse suspicion; Neon Genesis Evangelion: in 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time, and mankind's only hope lies in Evangelion, humanoid fighting machines developed by NERV, a special United Nations agency, only a handful of people can pilot the Evangelion, teenagers born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared; Bubblegum Crisis 2041: recovering from a devastating earthquake, Mega-Tokyo's recovery is greatly attributed to Boomers, androids that look, think, and act like human beings, however the company responsible for creating the Boomers have grander plans than just rebuilding a city, enter the Knight Sabres, Linna Yamazaki, Nene Romanova, Priscilla S. Asagiri and Sylia Stingray, four women equipped with hardsuits with the courage and firepower to stand up against the Boomers and GENOM! When Darkhorse assumed the rights of many former TokyoPop released CLAMP manga, they were apparently in talks with Universal to make a live action to Clover, this is something I would have like to happen, especially if it meant that the manga would be revived, given that it went on hiatus, when the magazine it was serialised in closed! Clover has not received an anime outside a six and a half minute long , same is true for Wish, whilst Wish's more like a music video (featuring ALI Project), Clover's is more like a trailer, or an abridged version of the story, with Ichiko Hashimoto providing a fantastic "score", she also did the music to RahXephon, another good soundtrack! I don't know if it was ADV Films who thought of making a live action to Full Metal Panic!, or if it was someone else, although I think I heard about this after ADV (sadly missed) went under, so might have been someone else! Looking at Wikipedia, they've broken my heart, in that apparently Zac Efron to possibly play Sousuke, I thought it was Zac Braff, although he's probably a bit old to play Sousuke, I could see him in the role! Although Full Metal Panic! is good, I prefer the second series, Fumoffu, which introduces Student Council present, Hayashimizu Atsunobu, with his versed ability to translate Punk to English/Japanese, and back, and Mikihara Ren, his secretary, and gives more air time to Inaba Mizuki! Given the success ADV had with Neon Genesis Evangelion -don't know why, RahXephon was better-, ADV decided they would make a live action series, with the same special effects company as Lord of the Rings, this has never happen in the end, it sits on Matt Greenfield's shelf, although images from Weda for there part do exist! Another series ADV thought they'd do their own version of was Bubblegum Crisis, however now that I think about it, I don't know if that was to be a live action, or an anime! Akira has seen a couple of proposed versions, one with DiCaprio as Tetsu or Kaneda, and another with K-Stew as Tetsu or Kaneda, thankfully they remain non-starters! Ok, Akira wasn't bad, but the ending was a bit out of control - by this I mean the anime, not read the manga! Lastly we look at the unconfirmed, someone told me that they were possibly making a Pokémon Live Action, is this true? I remember the jokes about Shia LeBeouf as Ash, don't tell me this could be a reality? I am aware that there was Pokémon Live, which was a dream come true for Ash-Misty fans (shame the introduction of May was still three years away ;D), and had Giovanni as Gary's father! The other unconfirmed is apparently Ghost in the Shell is receiving a live action, with Scarlett Johanson, again, is this true? Oh, there's a couple of other live actions I could mention, Legend of Zelda (and it appears it will be a Blonde Zelda, woop, I feel Zelda looks better blonde - cite. Hyrule Warriors and Skyward Sword), Battle Royale, Azumi, Shinobi (based on Basilisk) and Mushi-shi (released in US as Bug Master)! I think I had another, but I've forgotten it! Right, I think I've taken up enough of your time, I know I've taken up enough of my own, I leave you with these questions: What dorama do you know of, and have seen? What dorama do you know of, but have not seen?
EDIT1: Oh, there's Attack on Titan, isn't there, forgot about that, not actually watched the anime, or read the manga, might do it at somepoint, some kids in a bookstore recommended it to me, one of the highpoints they mentoned was Sasha Braus, seen pictures of Christina Renz about too! That said, the Attack on Titan manga I'm most interested in, is the high school situation one, I get the feeling it might be a bit similar to Petit Eva, if the Titans take on the same role as EVA-01, or "Evahoncho", or something like that! EDIT2: There's even a Hell Teacher Nube live series, that stars 2015 live Misa (Sano Hinoko) as one of the caharacters, Hosokawa Miki! I've also seen a concrete article that Ghost in the Shell live action with Scarlett Johanson, is real! EDIT3: Oh noes! I've now found evidence that the possibility of a live action Pokémon, could be happening!
8. Lemony Snicket - All the Wrong Questions - Book 3 - Shouldn't You Be In School? Prequel to the "Series of Unfortunate Events", following Snicket in his younger days, when he first joins the V.D.F.! It's enjoyable, same sort of satirical writing you'd find with Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchet, although written for a younger audience! I read that Netflix is in the process of making a television series to "Series of Unfortunate Events", with Barney from How I Met Your Mother (Neil Patrick Harris) playing Count Olaf, who was previously played by Jim Carrey in the movie, Supergirl (the younger) from CBS' Supergirl (Malina Weissman) playing Violet, who was previously played by Emily Browning in the movie, and Jeff from Rules of Engagement (Patrick Warburton) playing Lemony Snicket, which will probably be quite different to Jude Law's perfomance in the movie! It's a bit unfair that Count Olaf will be going up again a Krytonian..., oh wait, Malina Weissman will not be an alien from another galaxy this time !
9. Interestingly I was asked this same question not too long ago, by a couple of kids in a bookstore! I would have to say, answering the title, which states "character", rather than "host", it would be Bossa Nova (RItsu Kasanova), the potential romance with Haruhi, or Renge Houshakouji, given some of her bizarre entrances! To answer the question on the thread, I think I'll say Haruhi, given how she's the centre of a reverse harem! I don't think I needed any encouragement to watch the series in the form of characters, I just did!
10. I will go with:
Natsuki loves martial arts, and a member of her high school karate club! A new student Rina, transfers to the school, and catches Natsuki's attention as someone she wants to befriend, however is rebuffed by Rina, before the two are suddenly attacked by a group of masked attackers, *starts singing "You are the mighty"*! I actually thought it was an 80s anime, and had came out when I was born (1987), but apparently not! I like the energy of it, the music, the fact that there's apparently a wrestling style called "Catch-as-catch-can", and that the Karate Captain looks like Meep, if he was human, well that might be going a bit far! The OVA only consists of two episodes, and bizarrely whilst Rina is able to relatively hold her own in the first episode, she becomes a damsel in distress in the second episode, with Natsuki steamming ahead in the fighting skills category! anidb: Natsuki Crisis (OVA) That said, now that I've found out that Natsuki Crisis came out in 1994, there's another contender for oldest favourite anime:
Kobayashi Miyuki is to receive a new patrol partner, Tsujimoto Natsumi, however their first meeting nearly ends in Miyuki arresting Natsumi for speeding! Eventually they are able to put aside their differences, and become strong partners! I'll have to check how much of this I've watched, I know I've watched the OVA, Series 1 and 2, the movie, mini-specials and Series 2 Special in which Miyuki and Natsumi transfer to America, only to find American equivilants of their co-workers there, however I don't think I've watched Series 3 (Full Throttle)! anidb: You're Under Arrest (OVA) I'm now trying to see if there's any older anime I've watched, although I'd have to say the above are my oldest favourites: Detonator Orgun (1991): after finishing college, Tomoru Shindo can't decide whether to follow in his family's footsteps, and go into Interstellar shipping, or join the Earth Defence Force (EDF), he experiences strange dreams featuring mecha and an unknown woman, Youko(?), and he develops a crush on genetically engineered EDF researcher Professor Kanzaki - it was released by Manga Entertainment in the UK, and was good, I think, but wouldn't say my oldest favourite; Vampire Princess Miyu OVA (1988): Miyu is destined to hunt down murderous demons known as Shinma and return them to the land of the dark, however she is pursued by spiritualist Himiko, determined to find out who Miyu is, and stop her sucking the blood of innocent humans - think I've watched this, but could be wrong, I know I've watched some of *a* Vampire Princess Miyu, perhaps it was the series, originally released in 1988; Haja Taisei Dangaiou OVA (1987): a group of four young people with esper abilities, Mia Alice, Lamba Nom, Pai Thunder and Rol Kran have the ability to control a new super weapon/robot, Dangaioh - released by Manga Entertainment as "Dangaioh", was good, and originally in the year of my birth, have to watch it in the original sub, at somepoint, damn Classic range and their dub only tracks! Oh wait... ENTER NEW CHALLENGERS(!!):
Two advanced civilisations, the Paranoids, a race of alien humanoids, and the Solenoids, an all-female race are locked in a war that has gone on for centuries! When the Solenoid fleet leaves the battle to defend an experimentally teraformed world by the Paranoids, one damaged Solenoid ship, the Starleaf is seperated from the fleet! Aboard are: Eluza, the Captain; Rabby, the take charge character; Luffy, the brash pilot; Catty, the mysterious science officer; Pony, the pink-haired ditzy tech; Patty, a reliable member of the crew; and Remy, the cute one! anidb: Gall Force: Eternal Story Oh wait, wrong Gall Force, although Rabby's bunny helmet is super cute! The first Gall Force arc, which includes Eternal Story, Gall Force 2: Destruction, and Gall Force 3: Stardust War is interesting, but I prefer the second arc: Rhea Gall Force and Gall Force Chikyuu Shou (both 1989) - the Solenoid and Paranoid races are long since dead, but their descendants survive on Earth, and have now inherited a bleak destiny predicted so many years before! Sandy, a young woman carries the guilt of her father's hand in the destruction of civilisation, however unknown to her, also carries the key to possible salvation! Released by Manga Entertainment, under its Classic range, means that it was dub only in the UK, and also possibly incomplete, I remember the Manga Entertainment trailer reels saying something like "OVAs 1 - 4 available now, with OVAs 5 and 6 following shortly", which they never did, which put me off buying it, however given that OVA 5 and 6 would be Gall Force: Shin Seiki Hen , I could live with out those episodes, it was like "how to mess up a good ending"! anidb: Rhea Gall Force and Gall Force Chikyuu Shou Like her ancestor, Sandy also sports a kind of rabbit-like helmet! The dub features inconsistent Scottish accents! There was another Gall Force anime after this arc, Gall Force: Revolution (1997), however was an alternate universe series, with a different animation style to that of the original series, it was a good series however!
Yuri and Kei work as Trouble Consultants for the Worlds Works and Welfare Agency, usually shortened to 3WA, under the code name "Lovely Angels", however due to the destruction they leave in their wake, they're more commonly known as "Dirty Pair", just don't say it to their faces, *starts singing "Ru-ru-ru-russia[n] roulette"*! Got into Dirty Pair thanks to ADV Films UK licensing Dirty Pair Flash, and although I watched the updated-alternate-universe-prequel first, I still think that the original is just as good, I personally don't know which I prefer, Flash Yuri and Kei, or original Yuri and Kei, I might need to rewatch all of Dirty Pair again to find that out! That said, I did feel there were some discrepancies between the various original Dirty Pair stuff, in that sometimes Yuri would be the smart one, and other times Kei, and some of the stories repeated, but revolved around the other angel! The original series is pretty interesting with its fourth wall references, such as the first episode, where a computer displays the actors from the original series of Star Trek, or their names, anyway! anidb: Dirty Pair
Before Lovely Complex, Stand Up!, Haru x Kiyo, Giant Cinderella, Boku no Suki na Otokonoko, Kirakira Soda Chocolate, Popopo no Onee-san, 20 Senchi, Ooki Onnanoko wa Daisuki Desu ka?, Glamourous, Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki, Komori-san wa Kotowarenai! (Komori is taller, whilst Otani is shorter, yet their names are the reverse) Sket Dance (with Koma Morishita, didn't know, been meaning to get round to reading/watching it though), and to some extent: Super Dreadnought Girl 4946, Hitomi-sensei no Hokenshitsu, Nantsu no Taizai (sure you have Diane, but isn't Elizabeth taller too?), 1/8 Kanojo, Fatonic Love and Non Scale -stumbled onto "related" series-, there was The Kabocha Wine! Read/glanced a couple of them: 20 Senchi: cute 4koma revolving around a short male mangaka and his tall female assistant; Ooki Onnanoko wa Daisuki Desu ka?: ecchi manga about a female volleyball team - I'm rooting for Sanae/Captain and Shizuku, however now that certain things have been revealed, might go back to rooting for Ayano too; Glamourous: cute manga, shame it got cancelled - Ogawa Tomoo doesn't know why Oomori Yuka would want to date a guy like him, so tries to sabotage their relationship; Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki: cute manga revolving around Fujiyama and Kanba who have known each other since preschool, however after an incident at school, Kanba starts to look at Fujiyama differently, and asks her out; Super Dreadnought Girl 4946: cute manga featuring unlucky in love Makoto, who saves a giantess, Mana, who then confesses her love to him, he then finds himself garnering the attention of a taller kouhai, Akemi, and a temporary exchange student, Montana; Hitomi-sensei no Hokenshitsu: cute manga based around Hitomi, the school doctor, working at an all monster school, helping students (always(?) girls) of all forms - tall girls like Kyouko Ooki, small girls like Chisa Osanai, and even long tongued girls like Shitara Nobuko; 1/8 Kanojo: ecchi manga featuring Asuha, who wakes to find herself in her childhood friend's room but at the size of a doll; Fatonic Love: Mutsumi and Kaede are good friends, Mutsumi is tall, but plump, whilst Kaede is thin, but short; Non Scale: cute doujin(?) featuring Tanita An who was already tall, but when she goes off sick from school, classmate Kashimi finds that due to the "Giant God Disease" has become 18 metres tall, with plants springing up all over her body! I feel like after mentioning those series, someone might associate me as a *-con ! I only just stumbled upon this series, and after watching a couple of episodes, it feels like it's a contender for oldest favourite series! Shame only seven episodes were translated, I will have to track down the raw files , although in regards to raws, I don't know where to look! I did have a good site, at one time, but I don't think it recovered from the time FileServe axed all the content from its servers when MegaUpload was shut down! anidb: The Kabocha Wine Next follows three sections, the first are instances where I prefer the remake, and in one instance, if I had preferred the original, it would have beaten The Kabocha Wine as the oldest anime I've mentioned, so far, but possibly not as a favourite ! The second section will be honourable mentions, I couldn't really think what to say about them, but thought they had to be mentioned, and the third section is "are they really that old?"
We'll start with the "remakes are better" series, and from latest to earliest: Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996) - in 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time, and mankind's only hope lies in Evangelion, humanoid fighting machines developed by NERV, a special United Nations agency, only a handful of people can pilot the Evangelion, teenagers born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared; Bubblegum Crisis (1987-1991) - recovering from a devastating earthquake, Mega-Tokyo's recovery is greatly attributed to Boomers, androids that look, think, and act like human beings, however the company responsible for creating the Boomers have grander plans than just rebuilding a city, enter the Knight Sabres, Linna Yamazaki, Nene Romanova, Priscilla S. Asagiri and Sylia Stingray, four women equipped with hardsuits with the courage and firepower to stand up against the Boomers and GENOM; Kyoushoku Soukou Guyver (1986) - Sho Fukamachi discovers a mysterious metal object, in a blinding light, Sho finds himself fused with the Guyver, a mecha of mysterious alien design, to save his girlfriend, Mizuki Segawa and the world, he must become the Guyver, and battle against Chronos Corporation and their biocreatures, Zoanoids, hell-bent on world domination; Space Battleship Yamato (1974-1975) - in the distant future, the war between humanity and the Gamilon has rendered the Earth's atmosphere uninhabitable, however they are provided with hope, when Queen Starsha of Iscandar reaches out to them, stating that there is a device on Iscandar that can neutralise the radiation, the crew of the Yamato have to achieve the trip to and from Iscandar within one Earth year, or the human race will come to an end! As mentioned, I prefer the remakes to these series than the originals, these are Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22: You can (not) Advance, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (1998-1999), Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and Guyver the Bioboosted Armour (2005): [b}Neon Genesis Evangelion - Mari Illustrious Makinami not enough Horaki Hikari or Ibuki Maya, not really, although that would be nice, it was just that Shinji was a terrible character in the series, it seems like this was changed for the 2.22 as I found the movie quite enjoyable - although it's not described as a copy of Evangelion, there are a lot of similarities between RahXephon and Evangelion (although EvaXephon does take it to the extreme), and I personally feel it's a better version, plus having Shitow Megumi, Asahina Hiroko and Cathy McMahon doesn't hurt; Bubblegum Crisis - it's possible that the reason I prefer the remake to the original here is because the remake has more time to flesh out a story, as it has twenty six episodes, rather than just eight, the original also was missing an ending, which came later in the form of Bubblegum Crash! (1991); Kyoushoku Soukou Guyver - it's possible that I might watch the original OVAs at some point, I actually have to keep an eye on what I type, when typing the title of the remake, as sometimes it comes out as Biobusted, which I joke is Witchblade; Space Battleship Yamato - in regards to this series, I think it's because it's a series of its time, there is only one female member of the Yamato crew, and she fills multiple roles, such as nurse, whilst in 2199, we have a full-time nurse, by the name of Harada Makoto, along with a female communications officer, science officer and pilot - pilots, if we expand to non-Yamato crew!
I couldn't really think what else to say about them, again, from latest to earliest: Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko (1999) - two factions, TERRA and NESS are locked in a space war game to control planets in 2999 AD, they fight in spaceships that teleport the pilot back to the mothership upon destruction, resulting in no casualties, however the reflexes of people in the 30th Century have greatly deteriorated, so a TERRA engineer, Curtis Lawson decides to use a time machine to go back 1000 years, and recruit Yamamoto Yohko, Kagariya Momiji, Hakuhouin Ayano Elizabeth and Midou Madoka to aid in their cause; Cutey Honey (1973-1974) - Honey Kisaragi is not your average 16 year old girl, she has a penchant for getting into trouble, one day she receives an odd message from her father, and returns to his laboratory, to find him murdered, by an organisation known as Panther Claw, who are after the Air Matter Transmutation System Dr. Kisaragi had been making, after defeating Panther Claw, Honey finds her father's conciousness in a robot facsimile, which informs Honey that she's a cyborg, created by Dr. Kisaragi, and that he had installed the Air Matter Transmutation System in her, allowing her to take on different personae; Cyborg 009 (1966) - Shimamura Joe finds awakens to find he's been altered into a half machine by mysterious doctors. He escapes and finds 8 others like him, Franciose Arnoul, Ivan Whiskey, Jet Link, Albert Heinrich, Geronimo Jr., Chang Changku, Great Britain and Pyunma, and band together to fight the evil organization responsible for this inhuman act against them! Two of these series have had a number of sequels/remakes to them, and the other received an honourable mention on the possibility that it's name is inspired from Space Battleship Yamato, however as I can't really think of more to say on that matter, I won't: Cutey Honey - New Cutey Honey (1994-1995), a spirit sequel to the original series, however it was cut short, shame; Cutey Honey Flash (1997), a shoujo version, which I'm currently watching now, in German, even though I don't speak German, unfortunately the English translation only went as far as episode 10, and I located the German dub, easier than the original version; Re:Cutey Honey, based on the Cutey Honey Live Action movie by Hideaki Anno; Cyborg 009 - Cyborg 009 Kaijuu Sensou (1967), a movie; Cyborg 009 (1968), twenty six episode series; Cyborg 009 (1979), fifty episode series; Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier (2001-2002), a fifty-one episode series; 009-1 (2006), a spin-off in which the cold war has continued for 140 years, it revolves around one of the Western Block's top agents, Mylene Hoffman, an enhanced female cyborg; 009 Re:Cyborg, movie which updates the character designs featured in most/all of the previous Cyborg 009 anime!
So now we look at series which are older than I expected, and start again from latest to earliest: R.O.D: Read or Die (2001) - Yomiko Readman is obsessed with books, however there is more to her than just her obsession with books, she is also a secret agency by the name of The Paper, working for a secret branch of the British Library, and able to control paper via telekinesis, browsing a local bookstore, she finds a new book she wishes to read, however it is stolen by I-Jin, clones of historical figures, identifying the book's importance, the British Library tasks Yomiko, along with Drake and Miss Deep with recovering it, before I-jin can use it to accomplish their goals; Vandread (2000) - life has not been treating Hibiki well, with the intergalactic society broken into civil war between males and females, he is stuck at the assembly line for war mecha, relentessly teased by his co-workers and unable to pursue his dreams of building his own mecha, he attempts to break in and steal a mecha for his own purposes, which turns out to be a bad idea, as he's thrust into the middle of a fever-pitch space battle, bringing him face-to-face with the enemy, and launches him into an adventure where he encounters Dita Liebely, Jura Basil Eldon and Meia Grisborn; Betterman (1999) - in 2006 mankind encounters a mysterious Phenomenon called "Algernon", nothing is known about Algernon, and all people involved with Algernon are dead, one day, the mysterious phenomenon happened at an underground Amusement park where our hero Keita met our heroine Hinoki, driving "Kakuseijin", they encounter a lot of mysteries and monsters, such as what is Algernon, what is Betterman, and why does he help them; Devilman Lady (1998-1999) - Fudou Jun is a beautiful supermodel who is idolized by many, but she has a dark secret that not even she knows about at first, for within her veins run the genes that hold the next step in the evolution of mankind, the same blood as the beastlike superhumans that terrorize the city, however unlike the rest of them, though, Jun has managed to hold a tenuous grip onto her humanity, and she is recruited by the mysterious Asuka Ran, member of a secret organization within the government, aimed at controlling, if not eliminating, these berserk destroyers of mankind; Martian Successor Nadesico (1996) - aliens have destroyed our base on Mars, wiped out our space fleets, and now, only one ship stands between Earth and total annihilation, disgusted by the incompetence of Earth's military, the independent arms manufacturer Nergal has built its own space battle cruiser, but due to the shortage of trained soldiers, they've had to assemble the most unorthodox crew to ever launch into orbit, a cook who's also a pilot and an admiral's daughter in command, the new starship is the most formidable fighting vehicle ever conceived; 1+2=Paradise (1990) - a strange relationship develops between college-boy Yuusuke and the beautiful twins, Yuka and Rika, he saves from a wild dog, the girls fall for their dauntless hero, but Yuusuke is pathologically scared of women! Read or Die has a sequel in the form of R.O.D; the TV, which follows Michelle, Maggie and Anita of the Three Sisters Detective Agency, as they protect writer Nene Sumiregawa whilst on a book tour in Hong Kong! Whilst Betterman is set in the same universe as Yuusha Ou GaoGaiGar! After that long post, and looking at the contenders, I might say my oldest favourite anime might be The Kabocha Wine, shame only seven episodes were translated! EDIT: I was going to say "how did I forget about Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind(s)?" (1984), but then I thought, well the title does refer to "series", so that's probably why that didn't enter my mind, but that's a good oldie, with Joe Hisaishi providing the music!
11. No problem, yeah didn't think it was Series 1 ! Need to get back to You're Under Arrest at some point!
12. I agree that English voice actors can't access the same "cute" range that the Japanese seem to be able to achieve, it might be down to how they're recorded; Japan it's a group session, a performance, whilst American it's usually a box on your lonesome! I have a soft spot for the old ADV dubs, well those probably around 2004, I could pretty much identify every voice actor in an anime, because they were that distinct; I joked that the voice actors weren't playing the characters, but the other way around ! Worst dubs for me that springs to mind: Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE and xxxHOLiC! What annoys me about these dubs is their inability to get almost any of the characters' names right; it's SA-KU-RA, not Sockura, or Secura as Nevada had it in Cardcaptors!! It's not just Sakura they can't say get wrong, Syaoran becomes Syao-ron (he's not a Mahjong move), Kurogane becomes Kurow-gane (he's not a boat), Watanuki becomes Wata-nuki (is that Ewokese?) and Himawari becomes Hima-wari (combining two sounds together to make a new sound isn't hard)! I also feel that Monica Rial was not a good choice for Sakura, or at least how she was voice acting at the time, if she was voicing as she did earlier in her career, when she was voicing quiet characters, I think I would have liked her performance better! The problem is that dubs elongate words based on their own rules of language, the concept that if there's only one consonant between two vowels, the first vowel will be long sound! I feel that rules of language should not apply when the subject is not of the home language (-chan should not be -charn, etc.), although I can't really say that when we English have Anglo-ised some foreign words, but then "foreigners" have done the same to some English words! You could perhaps say that we in the UK have a bit of good fortune, given the way the DVDs of one of our distributors (Kazé - French company that decided to set-up shop in the UK, but then before that we had Beez, also based in France) work, in that it locks you into either only watching the dub, or the sub, when you select "Play All", downside to this distributor is that they appear to not understand that "clean" opening/ending should not feature any text, so their "hardsubbing" of lyrics on the "clean" openings and endings are not really "clean"!
13. That's an easy one, it's You're Under Arrest, quite possibly the first series, given the characters featured, although might be a later series, as I don't think Aoi has black hair in the first series, could be wrong, it's been a while since I watched it, don't even know if I've watched Series 3 (Full Throttle) now! The series starts as a four episode OVA, and its focus kinda shifts, both could be classed as police action-comedy, but I felt the OVA more focused on police action, whilst the series focused on comedy!
14. No problem ! Well Patamon is always the last to evolve, maybe the poster's referencing this fact ! Or maybe it's because we've seen Seraphimon many times (the Golden Digimentals movie, and Frontier), perhaps they thought we were all Seraphimon'd out, and felt we needed to bask in the glow of HeraklesKabuterimon, and the "oh fudge" moment of Diaboromon trolling us as Meicoomon's evolved form ! Yeah, it's a longer wait than between the first and second movie! They could have given us a trailer to hold us over, more than just the teaser on the second movie trailer! Yeah, I don't know what it could relate to either, I mean is "kokuhaku" only bound to confession of love, or any confession? I was going to say that "confession" doesn't really link into evolutionary trigger, but then the last movie was "Determination", and that linked, in that in finding their resolve, through identifying what was holding them back, something like, the fact Jou wasn't being honest with himself, whilst Mimi was starting to believe (due to outside influences) that her pure idea were wrong, that they were able to trigger new evolutions! Yeah, it's possible that Koushiro could confess to Mimi, although would that mean that Takeru would also confess to Hikari? The TakeHika fans will explode! If confession isn't bound to confession of love, then perhaps Koushiro has to confess he doesn't have all the answers, but then we'd assume that would be the case anyway, no-one has all the answers, and as for Takeru, perhaps a confession that he sometimes feels despair! EDIT: It's always Patamon wasn't on the original poster, probably was, but movie posters do see revisions, from time to time!
15. Apologies for double post, but stumbled across the Confession poster when I was on Anime-Planet: It seems Meicoomon is channeling a bit of Diaboromon there! In my opinion ! So obviously, like Rosemon and Vikemon in the previous poster, we see HeruklesKabuterimon, however we see Patamon... not Seraphimon!? EDIT1: Just incase poster disappears due to hotlinking permissions, or whatever, here's original page: Digimon Adventure Tri. Movie 3: Kokuhaku EDIT2: If anyone wants to post a better image, either edit my post, or in their own post, that's fine, this was just first (and currently only) image I've seen!
16. I use Anime-Planet, and I was going to say that I've not updated it for a while, but when I was on, I thought "might as well", so have updated it, well, with what I can remember anyway (some of it's a guess), and decided to like Makoto Harada, as she needs "love", if Anime-Planet are classing her as a minor character in Space Battleship Yamato 2159! I picked Anime-Planet, because I found it was less addictive than MyAnimeList, I mean when I was looking at things on MAL, I'd be suggested "series x, and manga y", and I just found myself falling down a rabbit hole of suggestions! It seems that Anime-Planet might have gone that way too, whilst I've been away, they used to give you a "My life spent on anime" signature, which was cool, I went for a complimentary theme, with my avatar being of Gunbuster 2 (Diebuster/Aim for the Top 2), whilst the signature being of Gunbuster (Aim for the Top)! I also have an account with anidb, as it seems they changed the way their site works, so you can't access everything as a guest, unfortunately I forgot what the password was, but I hadn't done much with it anyway, got banned to many times, for opening too many pages!
17. Photobucket, however I only use it occasionally, used it more when I used LiveJournal, gotta get back to that, at some point, if I can remember the password! Actually, I have a couple of images on GoogePlus too, some Pokémon images (that I'd found around the time when AlphaSapphire/OmegaRuby theories were running wild), and some Persona images by Segami Daisuke (that at some point, I plan to use them for one of the unanimated Persona 3 CD dramas)! I could also upload images to my minhateca account, which is a Brazillian file storage site, which I use, as you had to register, in order to download things from it, so I'm now making use of it, by uploading files to it!
18. *presses side button up, and reads details displayed on window screen* Sony Ericsson Z520i! I'm old school, actually I did have a newer Sony Ericsson Walkman phone, but I put it in my pocket one day, it bashed its head on my keys, and never turned on again! I'm too lazy to get a new phone, I would use the excuse that touchscreens don't like me, but that's when the technology was new, I'm talking before touchscreen phones! I don't really have problem with modern touchscreens, so it's just that I'm lazy !
19. Foxit Reader, it allows you to write on PDF documents, which is handy, as some companies give you PDF application forms to fill out!
20. Possibly a bit of a dumb question, but you've read the manga to the anime suggested in the Looking for Good Horror Anime by Yuuki_Radosian? Well, without checking, I'm sure a couple of those have manga that they're either inspired from, or inspire! At somepoint, I'll make another post, I just got a little sidetracked when looking into manga on MangaUpdates, so just need to sort through them at some point - came across some that have the "Supernatural" tag, rather than "Horror" tag, assume you're not interested in those?
21. Anyone else feel that the number of "copycats" have shot up, since Sword Art Online and/or Log Horizon? Was looking at potential suggestions for GeneralOtter, regarding horror manga on MangaUpdates, and suddendly found myself being drawn into the site more and more; a bad habit of mine, regarding certain sites! Eventually, I found myself trawling through a number of different light novel/manga which either said something like "trapped in an RPG world" or "finds him/herself in a fantasy world"! My "argument" would be a lot stronger, if I had the names of these manga/novels to back up this claim, but I don't have them to hand, they're in a "huge" list of "must read at somepoint", along with other unrelated titles, such as Kikou Shoujo wa Kizutsukanai (Novel), which tickled me because the description mentions a "Royal Academy in Liverpool" (guessing it's the one in the UK, and if so, where I was born; Liverpool, not the Royal Academy, I don't think there is actually a Royal Academy in Liverpool), and R.O.D - Rehabilitation, which is some alternate Read or Die, with a different Yomiko to Yomiko Readman, and the age of books is at its end! I've watched the first episode of Sword Art Online, but I've not watched Log Horizon, at some point, I will probably do both! Still, I find it interesting how Sword Art Online and/or Log Horizon, has caused "copycats" to spring up, because as @SurrealBrain mentioned, before these two... there was .hack, another series (or rather group of series), I need to get round to watching, especially with Yuki Kajiura scoring some of them! There was also Ragnarok Online or Dragon Quest, not quite the same, as the characters aren't trapped in the RPG, the RPG is real, if that makes sense, but again, before Sword Art Online and Log Horizon, again need to watch!
22. No problem, congrats on the job, I need to get one of those, at somepoint ! It'd be nice, with some of my posts in the Digimon section of the forum, I do look to edit them after a week! Sorry, I should clarify, it wasn't a thread that went missing, but an edit I made to a thread, or at least I feel the new content went missing, I could be wrong, and just imagined I'd added to it!
23. I asume it will, it's just taking its time to have the details ironed out!
24. No problem, as I said, when thinking about it, my suggestions were a bit more supernatural, also horror's not really my forte ! 11 Eyes (Tsumi to Batsu to Aganai no Shoujo) or Trinity Blood, perhaps? That said, there isn't a horror tag on either of them, one features (a) suicide, 11 Eyes, the other features vampires, Trinity Blood!
25. I think I might be posting more supernatural suggestions rather than horror, but here goes: Ghost Hunt (Shiho Inada): if the manga is anything like the anime, I recommend it, some arc are pretty chilling - actually, appears it's based on a light novel series by Fuyumi Ono; xxxHOLiC (CLAMP): probably further into supernatural rather than horror, but some of the events have chilling consequences - links in with sister series Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE! Both series are available through Random House, most of them under Del Rey print (Tanoshimi in the UK), but some of them will be under Kodansha USA, or xxxHOLiC anyway, I don't know if Kodansha continued to licence Ghost Hunt, or if it was deemed finished; I've got one site telling me it finished, whilst another saying it's on-going! The front covers for Ghost Hunt are very shoujo, but then it's a shoujo series, apparently!
