This certainly is a question that I have thought about previously there is a fantastic video on why it isn't considered art in art schools - Which you can find in this spoiler tag (if it works haha) Furthermore yes it is considered art in the same way Media is considered art, as @Wodahs did some good research on in his post. I would like to add and answer your questions even further, Anime from my understanding and expression is like this. It is directly influenced by Asian and Eastern mentality and culture, however, there is an offset culture we see in the way Anime is produced; that is the lens that Japanese pop culture has towards Western Pop culture. Akira Kurosawa was the first film maker to actually achieve this, by basing a lot of his work on Westerns and in turn also influencing directors in the west one of his major works that fit into this category is "Seven Samurai". When we view Anime from this lens it makes it more clear as to what we can define Anime as. Just as we don't consider Star Wars Japanese, even though it was influenced a lot by Akira Kurosawa's work it is still western. In the same light shows made in other countries not made from the Japanese lens into the rest of the world can not be considered Anime, even if it has a similar art style and even eastern premise in its story. The point is the way characters are portrayed in its weirdness and the minor differences in the way plot is executed in Anime vs Cartoons are completely different. And even if it is set in a world more like the west, for example, My Hero Academia, it still has that Japanese lens that they express the Western culture through, it might resemble western story telling and premise but the execution is completely different. When we look at a show like Avatar what we instantly notice is the way it presents itself, the way characters grow is similar to that of movies such as Shrek. The progression is the same in the sense that it plays on western tropes instead of eastern tropes, the way characters interact with one another is the same as your tropy American Teenage Film. Where as the interactions between characters within MHA is more eastern in the sense that there are different levels of respect and understanding between peers and elders. If we look at how Bakago reacts it makes him stand out because of the social awkwardness he expresses. Where as Zuko or even Toph are rebellious rather than socially awkward. Therefor from what I can assess in the excecution of Avatar I wouldn't consider it an Anime because of its heavy western pop culture influence and its lens of the Eastern style of media. Rather than an Eastern style of media. There for Korean and Chinese Anime would more resemble Japanese culture purely because of the Eastern mindset, yet of course there will be slight differences in styles, but you will find shows like "Quan Zhi Gao Shou" which is Chinese, will resemble Anime 80% more than Avatar ever could. Sorry for my messy argument, if I find time I will edit it properly and find clearer evidence for what I mean to express.

Fastest Finger First - I thought of it because I just watched episode 6 At the moment about 38/100 Some flaws, there is too much explanation of things that don't matter small details. The characters are slow to develop because they aren't put in situations where they are challenged beyond the quiz knowledge. Its premise is weak and difficult to relate to if you aren't a knowledge computer yourself. The plot progression has abrupt and unrealistic ways of moving forward, this, however, is a minor flaw in the overall plot progression. Yet it is reasonably enjoyable, the opening and ending song is excellent.

What is the worst anime you have ever watched?
Etyo replied to scarlet reaper's topic in Anime Discussion
It's been so long I thought I was alone all this time. However, AOT wasn't the worst I have completed. The only Anime I absolutely loathed was Mahou Sensei Negima! I rated it 0.5/5 I wanted to rate it 0 but that wasn't an option. If you can call excrement art, then I guess it's a form of art. -
https://kitsu.io/users/Etyo/library?sort=rating&status=completed This website also has an application for your phone called Kitsu and on it, it links your list and it calculates it by checking episode count in your entire list, the calculations go as far as to know how many minutes each series is (really basic mathematics, yet implemented well). It used to be called Hummingbird, its a good website and great application.

You are not the only one I also keep track. However I am sure that over time I have lost a couple through the cracks. Because back when I first started getting into Anime, I didn't have a list, then when I discovered that you can make lists I had to rethink that which I have watched. So my list at the moment including OVA's and movies and second seasons (Cause who can bother going to find out how many to not count lol.) is 221 titles. However as a time watch - I have spent 3 months, 7 days and 6 hours watching Anime - This includes things I have dropped.

6.7/10 Really good. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

This is a fun premise, I feel like you can play on it well. I would highly recommend making a strong supporting role apart from the two, something like a butler or someone who works in the palace. As for the name it feels like it needs an x in there somewhere. Maybe something like "Royalty Complex" or "Royalty x Triangle" or "Triangle x Square" or you can abandon the x and just go with a light novel title "My love who became my sister, oh and I am now a prince." or you can go with "Royal x Romance x Triangle"

This is what I found Please Enjoy! Code geass Death Parade 12 Ep. But I think you will like it anyway Death note I think you seen this before but who know? Guilty crown Hellsing Kaze no stigma Another The Future Diary Less funny I have already seen these, I have heard of Ghost Hunt, its on my planned to watch. I have not heard of We Without Wings however, I probably won't venture into that area because its both Harem and Ecchi, not really in my ball park. I have forgotten about Ghost Hunt though, I will consider checking it out. You're going to have to go a bit more "unknown" than death note and death parade though haha, I have seen a lot of Anime too . If you feel up to a challenge I would appreciate more suggestions if you think of anything, I mean if you add action to that list it might make it easier? On another note I would like to suggest an Anime to you, its name is: Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru. Worth checking out if you haven't already, its reasonably unknown to the community but its fantastic as a show.

I would like a good 24 episode series, one thats not moe, one that is not well known. I don't have an animelist that I can link sorry. I would like something that makes me think, surprises me, and perhaps makes me laugh every now and then. I am into social sciences and psychology, yet I also enjoy the philosophy of words and art. Throw me your best-hidden gems. I appreciate the effort.

The question comes down to this, does your religion/belief proclaim love regardless of whether or not people live it out accurately. If it doesn't then there's a problem. Love is not an unidentifiable concept, it is expressed clearly through action, it's not self-seeking if it is then that's infatuation, not love. If I love you then even if you hate me for it, I have to tell you the truth, it would be wrong not to. I do however agree if you choose not to believe that is your case, and we shouldn't force anything upon you. At the same time don't assume that when we share something it means we are forcing it on you, just because we are telling you what we believe. I do not agree that logic and common sense is the problem here (Even though I do agree the majority of human beings struggle to think about what they believe and why they believe, but please remember the case goes to all humans not only ones who believe in organized religion), it is as existentiallylostdumbell says we have sin and this is why we need guidance from someone who doesn't sin.

Required viewing for anime films vs. Obscure ones
Etyo replied to RepentantSky's topic in Anime Discussion
I have gotten the same feeling from all Ghibli films regardless if it was Miyazaki or not. I think they just have a niche that they don't grow out of regardless who their director is. I did however in my mind type as if I was referring to Miyazaki, even though it is just his shadow throughout the works of Ghibli. -
I am sorry I can't choose, but I will say that I can relate to Spike the most out of all the characters. His background is very similar to mine.

Required viewing for anime films vs. Obscure ones

Personally, I really enjoy a movie with a very artsy plot and design. I like popular works, but to be honest, I am not a big fan of Ghibli he has some interesting stuff and his artwork is really well choreographed however I find his plot to be a bit all over the place. Not to say that I don't enjoy some of his movies it's for sure that it is fantastic as an achievement but over-hyped in my opinion, his works have the same feeling to them it becomes a bit dull. Shinkai is also fantastic, I do think he is different to Ghibli in the sense that his newest movie "Your Name" has a completely different feel to it in light of his previous works, where he intertwined sci-fi with a romance mystery, which I think is unique in light of his previous stuff which was mainly romance, mystery, and drama. I was really surprised with Kyoto Animation coming out with "A silent voice" because of its excellent execution, bar a couple of directing mistakes. I deem these as the popular area of Anime Film. I prefer however Short story works because it takes a lot more effort to fit a coherent story within a 20-30 minute slot. In my opinion also more artistic value within shows like that. There have been some very fascinating ideas that came out of the short story genre in Japanese Anime, some that range from existential to mundane lifestyle. I am yet to come across a short film/series which I didn't enjoy. I also like particular OVA episodes because of its unique ability to retell a story/series with a different perspective, one that comes to mind is Black Rock Shooter OVA. From what I see is superior to the series as a whole, and also very well done in directing art and mise en scene to help assist telling a story. I classify the TTGL movies also in this section because of its reuse of the original plot with slight improvements, these are also great films. There is also the section of Movie continuation of series, or additional background or story. I really have a love-hate relationship with this section of Anime film production. Because it can either make you love a series and its characters, even more, giving you a truly enjoyable movie which fits in with the series well. Or it can literally just be a cash grab, which had potential but was used as a ploy to just make the franchise grow to make more money. Two films as contrast to one another in my mind are, Cowboy Bebop the movie and Sword art online ordinal scale. -
I find that you are very wise in not rejecting the possibility of there to be Objective truth. I hope that when you do go searching in them that you find that, the Bible is the only one among millions/billions of gods and religions which do not require you to become perfect to be loved by God. "The case for Christ" is a highly recommended documentary/book for you if you truly are interested in finding out if there is truly evidence for Jesus Christ and Him being God. Because if it is true then you have found a treasure that is beyond anything that you can comprehend, but if it isn't true then you can rest assured that you are living life the best way you can.

Cowboy Bebop lol, I love everything about the show. I have watched most of the interviews I could find even voice overs of Yoko Kanno of some episodes and also some of the dub voice actors voice over some episodes too. I have watched it in Dub and Sub and I own it on blue-ray, I have listened to the whole 7-hour soundtrack multiple times and I would do it again. I have seen episodes not released on DVD or any platform, only airing once in Japan as an alternative end to cowboy bebop, I have also cosplayed as Spike. I constantly praise it, because of its excellencies in contrast to almost no faults due to its nature is unable to be. I can argue that Cowboy Bebop purely because of its name in itself is the only perfect Anime that would ever exist and has ever existed. You could say it is an obsession, but I would say its worth the praise that it gets, and probably even more than it gets.

Is Log Horizon really better than Sword Art Online?
Etyo replied to Optic's topic in Anime Discussion
I like this idea, and my thoughts were exactly this. I am not saying that the arc is perfect or even great, I am saying its better than the rest of SAO. Yuuki as a character worked together with Asuna to grow one another, they had more of a relationship than Asuna and Kirito. This is why I use it as an example. When you use other characters as a foundation to develop a character from, then both should grow. Log Horizon did this better than SAO, and the Yuuki arc did it better than any other arc in the SAO franchise. -
Sword art online! HAHAHHAAHA. kidding. Cowboy Bebop for sure. I think this Anime will be relevant throughout the existence of the human race, because of the philosophical issues it faces and the basic issue of facing your past. Everyone has a past. The music is directly intertwined with the theme and the characters are simple enough to be relevant in any era beyond the 1990s.

Okay so I am looking for some great films to watch for a movie night at mine. Anime of course, I already have one Ghibli film so please don't recommend me anymore Ghibli. I am looking for some movies that don't need a series background to appreciate or understand the movie. Please Help! Oh and please don't recommend me Your Name or A Silent Voice.

Is Log Horizon really better than Sword Art Online?
Etyo replied to Optic's topic in Anime Discussion
Listen, it's been fun to reminisce over 2013. But I have one thing that always stuck out to me in this idea of SOA + being good or any anime for that matter, being good or bad. Reading through this thread has really made it apparent that people don't know how to gather basic evidence for their opinion. In other news, we are also so scared to give evidence because we are so afraid of disagreeing with one another. Disagreeing does not = not being able to have community together. Is it better for me to be me or for you to see a fake person, how is that community? In regards to the very first reply in this thread, I need to ask you, WHAT?! Could you please tell me as a person who is Asuna? and Who as a person is Kirito? Your statement boggled my mind and do the same with any character except for Yuki (purple hair). Furthermore the last part of Season 2 was by far better than the rest of SAO because of the Yuki arc, Asuna grew character there without that she is a teenage girl with hardly any personality we know nothing about her and without her experience in SAO she wouldn't have developed as a character at all, it's embarrassing to claim she is a good character before Season 2. -
Thank you for your replies, everyone. Yeah, I don't know, I find it amazing how innovative Anime in itself is. But when I look at the Anime medium as a whole, there are definitely very generic things. But I find it amazing how much variety there is, I love Anime and these crazy people who probably do take too many drugs when drawing or sometime in their life to come up with these ideas. So many deep thinkers and creative minds mixed. I look forward to seeing what other suggestions are made here, how about some things which are innovative but are not normally heard of? Like Kure-nai or So Ra No Wo To.
