  1. Levi from Shingeki no Kyojin or Saitama from One Punch Man. I really don't get the hype around these characters.
  2. Subbed for me, but I have watched a lot of dubbed ones in the past, too. And yes, there are a few anime I just can't stand in Japanese and I prefer the dub in a few cases. Clearly not every anime has good Japanese voice acting.
  3. Have you seen kaichou wa maid-sama?
  4. That's your opinion and I won't judge you for it. This is a free country after all. Again, the series is not as well-known or even liked in the West as it is in Japan and the translation definitely differs from the original. In Japanese it's really more of a typical kids show, whereas the English version adds more adult humor to it.
  5. You're right on that one. I also believe that many, who are not familiar with its source material, are gonna enjoy this movie a lot. I highly assume that this is what the producers were aiming to do, reaching an audience who are not that familiar with anime.
  6. Yep, making her Japanese would've been even better. But knowing Hollywood, they wouldn't have cast a Japanese actress for the role. Maybe Rinko Kikuchi, but that's about it. Remember when the main female cast of Memoirs of a Geisha were Chinese actresses? As long as it sells well, they don't care about casting what we would believe to be the right choice. Scarlett Johansson is a well-known actress in the west (mostly due to her looks, which aren't THAT great imo) and of course with a famous actress in the leading role, they're practically assuming that it'll be a hit anyways and also aim for those not familiar with the franchise.
  7. I don't think it's that bad. The Funimation version butchered it, though... It's fairly liked in Japan and it IS a kids show, let's be fair. Nothing can be ever as bad as Eiken or Pupa.
  8. Back to topic, I really don't understand why they cast Scarlett Johansson in the first place, but okay. She does not fit the role at all imo. Way to americanize another anime movie that was perfectly fine the way it was. The character's name is clearly known as Motoko Kusanagi and not entirely referred to as Major, so yeah, an Asian would be better for the role.
  9. I don't know if you ever heard of Eiken, but if you want to see something bad go check it out. HOTD and SAO don't even come close to the awfulness that is Eiken. You're referring to the Funimation dub or the original Japanese version?
  10. I DON'T think she's bad at all? I praised her? I'm female, thank you.
  11. I don't know if that band will suit your taste, but maybe you can check out coldrain. If you haven't heard of them already, of course.
  12. Back in my days where I actually liked Naruto, I didn't find Sakura to be that horrible as the majority of the people believe her to be. Kishimoto clearly does not know how to write good female characters, but she good some development throughout the series. She had to work hard for goals and whether you like her character or not, you have to admit for what she's achieved, she clearly deserves some respect.
  13. Totally agree on that one. Definitely one of my favorites as well. On top of that, the music is the best I've probably heard in any anime so far. Yoko Kanno's work is phenomenal. Also, this is one of the few anime where the dub is superior to the original and this rarely happens imo.
  14. lang-8.com is also a great study method, I agree. But keep in mind that you also need a basic level in Japanese. To know some Kanji does come in handy. Only use this website if you know some Japanese already.
  15. I enjoy Netflix way more than hulu. Its $9.99 plan gives you more options than hulu’s $7.99 plan, while also offering users a comparable plan for the same price as hulu.
  16. Yoshi's Island and Secret of Mana As a kid, I found Secret of Mana to be incredibly hard, but I was still fascinated by its gameplay.
  17. I personally liked Tien, at least in Dragonball. He just doesn't get much development throughout the series, but a lot of DB characters don't, at least not in Z. It's a shame because Yamcha and Tien were great characters in the original DB, but were massively overpowered by Goku and Vegeta.
  18. This is the best thing you can probably do. I haven't spoken Japanese in a very long time due to my job and other real life stuff (I still suck at the language though), but you need to get a Japanese language partner, the sooner the better. If you don't feel comfortable (and trust me, at the beginning you won't) with actually speaking Japanese, you can still stick to just texting them. Funny thing is, rather than just having a simple language exchange, try to befriend them instead. That made things much easier for me and I didn't have to feel so awkward. Learning through an actual person is and will always be beneficial. Nobody can tell me that they learned Japanese through solely watching anime, that's complete bullshit. Aside from japanguide.com, I can somewhat recommend interpals.net, but the spam you might be getting can get quite annoying...
  19. I don't have anything against onsen scenes, as onsen are part of the Japanese culture and it's good that we're exposed to that, but I dont like the way that they're mostly used for fanservice. But then again, you do enter these onsen naked... it's not the scenario that's horrible and repetitive, it's the stupid fanservice that's annoying.
  20. Shou Tucker from either Fullmetal Alchemist or Brotherhood. The worst character to ever exist in the anime universe, really. Truly a despicable character. If any of you can top that by naming a character who's worse than him, feel free to do so You've all seen the anime (I hope lol) and if you don't, go watch it right now and prove me wrong
  21. It's obvious who I'm picking. Kenshin Himura, of course! He's one of the most unique characters i've ever came across in anime. Kenshin clearly undergoes the biggest character development, and fleshing out: he evolves from a cold and ruthless assassin to a man who vowed to never kill again. Nevertheless he struggles to maintain his composition, as being pushed to the limit by his foes he tries to avoid reverting to his older self. Brilliantly done. I freaking love this character and I don't think any character can fascinate me like he did.
  22. Definitely and forever Sailor Jupiter, of course! She proved that girls could kick ass and also be girly at the same time. Growing up, she was my ultimate role-model. I could really relate to her, I was such a huge tomboy as a kid (and as a teenager as well) and really into karate, kick-boxing, but I also loved dressing up, cutesy stuff and playing with dolls. So, thank you Sailor Jupiter for letting me embrace my feminine and masculine side as well!
  23. Ok, interesting. Maybe I'll check it out one day. I also played through FFXIII and while it wasn't the best of the FF series, I didn't hate it like the rest of the fanbase did. It's just not on par with classics like IV, VI or IX. The combat in XV reminded me too much of the one in KH. I'm not sure what to think about that and how well this kind of combat fits within the FF franchise. Or maybe I'm just too old-fashioned haha. I feel like Square Enix does a fantastic job with the DQ series, but with FF they're kinda slacking. But that's just my opinion.
  24. I haven't played FFXV yet, is it worth it? The gameplay just seemed so off to me and I heard the story is not well told either from multiple sources. Which might be a letdown for me, since the FF series is KNOWN for usually having a great story, and not having that in a newer entry to the series is really off-putting. At least for me personally. Compared to FF, the setting in DQ hardly ever really changes, but I don't mind that at all, when the rest of the game is brilliant. Also the monster design is the best I've ever seen in a J-RPG. Definitely Akira Toriyama at his best! And yeah, I also liked the idea of using proper European accents. Love how the translation did that. I really want DQXI to be released in the West, and from what I've seen in the trailers, it looks absolutely fantastic. Those people complaining about modern day J-RPGs not having a turn-based battle system anymore, should switch over to DQ I highly doubt they would ever change the battle system in DQ, otherwise the Japanese fanbase would be seriously pissed about that lol.
  25. IV is one of the best entries in the series imo! Good game to start the franchise. I haven't played one bad game from the series, really. And the music is way too underrated. Kouichi Sugiyama is a great composer and I believe he has done the music for every title so far. That's what I like about Dragon Quest: every game just feels so familiar. I hope they keep it that way for XI as well... With Final Fantasy, I really do not like the direction they're taking right now.
