Zeref
What is different about a bull shark I wonder that can make it be able to live in a river too? I have a lot of curiosity about fish and sharks too Do they die if they stay in a river?

Even though now I wonder if they ever feel pain when they lose their teeth from trying to bite something. lol I'm way too curious. XD I've loved sharks for a long time now. I can't really remember how long though. Every time I observe or hear about some people committing atrocities and other dark things it feeds my misanthropy. I don't encounter, observe, or hear about enough good that people do for me to change my misanthropic view on humanity. Well... ok, selectively misanthropic since it doesn't apply when I find genuinely kindhearted people that, if I'm fortunate enough, I can befriend. When I encounter those rare gems of humanity they make the world seem that much brighter from my perspective. ^^ Sharks don't seem to hurt when they loose a tooth and it's a pretty common occurrence with some sharks being able to even replace the tooth in as little as 24 hours. 2 hours ago, Zeref said: What is different about a bull shark I wonder that can make it be able to live in a river too? I have a lot of curiosity about fish and sharks too Do they die if they stay in a river? Bull sharks can come into river mouths and swim upstream in freshwater and adapt to it pretty well. The reason bull sharks are able to go into freshwater is because their kidneys function (as well as a special gland near their tails), in such a way that allows them to keep salt in their bodies even if they are in freshwater. The salt retention is the only reason bull sharks can do this. Sharks have to have salt in their bodies or their cells will rupture and they will die. Bull sharks have that salt retention capability though and often swim up and into the Mississippi River and have been seen as far inland as Illinois. One of the reasons they also go into these rivers is because they quite often give birth in freshwater areas because a lack of predators. So if you are in a river connected to an ocean, you very likely could have a bull shark nearby A bull shark is one of the only sharks I would never want to be in open water with. I've dived near great whites before, been in the water with nurse sharks, hammerheads, lemons, oceanic whitetips, reef sharks and whale sharks but I never want to be near a bull shark, mako or tiger in open water. Some biologists don't mind diving with tigers but I find them a little too erratic to be comfortable near in open water. 1
Animedragon
The more @Sakura tells us about sharks, the more I realise what amazing creatures they are and how badly popular culture treats them. 2

Is that just their normal behavior?

Sakura
3 hours ago, Forlorn said: Why are Tiger sharks so erratic though? Is that just their normal behavior? Tiger sharks are right up there with great whites on attacks on humans (however there really aren't that many attacks per year). But unlike great whites who will usually swim away after biting a human, a tiger shark won't. Usually great whites think a human is a seal because we look a lot like that to them from underwater, especially if you are on a surf or paddle board. Once they bite and taste it's not a seal, they go away. Tiger sharks have a pretty undiscerning palate and don't care what they are biting into and won't swim away, they just recognize it as "Oh I can eat this so I will". They can also grow as big as a great white, around 18 feet. They also are more likely to go into feeding frenzies and attack you. 2 hours ago, Zeref said: This has to bring up the question - What are everyone's favorite sharks then? Also I've liked them longer and known of them longer than I've known of any other shark, so it's probably because of that that the Great White shark is my modern day favorite shark. ^^ 4 hours ago, Sakura said: Tiger sharks are right up there with great whites on attacks on humans (however there really aren't that many attacks per year). I see why you wouldn't be comfortable around Tiger sharks after learning all of that. It sounds like a really voracious eater. Also sounds like a hair trigger when it comes to if Tiger sharks go on feeding frenzies. I'd take my chances with a Great White as opposed to a Tiger shark any day. o.o I mean, I can't swim, so I'd be sinking to the bottom anyway, but just saying. lol ^^; I want to learn how to swim someday, but that might not actually happen, like most of the things I've wanted to do. ><

Sakura
I did actually I learned that when I lived there. I also learned about the elusive "Haggis" that roams the hills (Still waiting to find a haggis I won't give upppp!)
Animedragon
The British Royal Coat of Arms is supported by a lion on one side and a unicorn on the other. They represent England and Scotland.
Zeref
Why is the lion chosen for England? Is the lion the national animal of England? I feel confused about a lion and a unicorn being national animals as I always thought national animals would be animals native to the land We just have the brown bear as the national animal of Finland as it has important history in mythology of Finland. The lion was fairly common in coats of arms in the Middle Ages, it symbolised strength and courage. King Richard I was known as Richard the Lionheart. The lion was on the family crest of England's ruling family back in the 12th century so it soon became the national crest and has remained so ever since. We did have lions in England once upon a time, but there's none now (outside of zoos and safari parks that is)

I am somewhat glad there is not a lion in England now it would be horrible to be trying to visit London and be chased by a lion.

Animedragon
There's no real evidence that Robin Hood ever existed, but try telling that to the residents and tourist agency of Nottingham! People like their folklore heroes. There's even statues of him in the area, and this belief in folklore legends isn't a new thing. Several centuries ago the monks of Glastonbury announced they had found the body of King Arthur, and reburied the body in front of the High Altar in the abbey church. What there is no doubt about is that the legends of Robin Hood and King Arthur make great stories to read.

Strangely enough @Sakura and I had almost a 2 hour conversation about King Arthur the other day. We were doing a quest on Runescape which involved King Arthur and the quest says he came from the land of Britain to the land of Geilinor. Geilinor is the land in Runescape. In the game he says he was staying in Geilinor until the land of Britain needs him again which prompted us to look more on him and find out he, according to the legends, was said to have possibly gone to another dimension or land and will return when he is needed again. I like to read about the legend of King Arthur and even Robin Hood they are very interesting characters even if they were not real. 1

I may be from the USA, but the many different stories of King Arthur told in pop culture and in folklore have always been something that interests me. There's something noble about the concept of it all, or at least that's what I think. I love how the Transformers: The Last Knight movie took their own spin on the story of King Arthur, and other movies with their own differences as far as telling the story. It's probably not the same as reading one of the stories of it, but I still love when they use the theme in movies. ^^ There's a nostalgic memory I have of reading a King Arthur story when I was little and I remember a feeling of loving the story so much I probably did think it was real. I'm sure someone rained on my parade at some point though like my so-called friends at the time always did. I have no idea why I ever put up with those kinds of kids, let alone ever calling them friends of mine. ;.; Man, if I could go back in time, I'd definitely do a lot of things differently. Though it's not the first thing I'd do if I could go back in time, obviously, but I'm just saying. ^^;
