  1. Looks like I have to go out to Goldstone on the 10th.  Damn.. I thought I was done with that when I switched jobs.  :(

@Wodahs Yes, it is very much a drive through (and hope you don't have to stop) sort of place.  :D

@Wodahs Mad respect for your line of work! What do you normally end up hauling if you don't mind me asking?

  2. Looks like my whole state is on fire.  Actually if you zoom out it looks like the whole western US is burning.  🔥🔥 season is definitely upon us.

I’m fine at the moment.  They put out the closest fire last week.  There’s still one fire to the north of me and one to the east but they’re both a good distance away.  As long as we don’t get any wind pushing the fires around I should be ok.

    3. RuthisianCodex

About 12 years ago there were some insane grass fires going on not too far from my house. That was absolutely nerve wracking to be sure.

  3. Looks like of the two cubes that I liked, OMOTENASHI and NEAS, neither one is looking too good.  :(

OMOT was a JAXA-sponsored lunar lander that was supposed to have landed on the moon this morning via (intentional) “lithobraking”.  :D  It may or may not have done so.  Unfortunately it hasn’t been heard from since it was deployed last week so nobody knows for sure.  The other JAXA mission, EQUULEUS, seems to be functioning as expected however.

The other one I liked was the Near Earth Asteroid Scout.  Or as I liked to call it the rainbow sail mission due to its propulsion & maneuvering system.  It was supposed to use a new type of solar sail to visit a couple near-earth asteroids but it too has not been heard from since deployment.

So far 4 of the 8 cubesats have had problems post-deployment.  (Artemis itself seems to be doing well.)

4 out of 8 isn't bad, but it's not good either.  Good to know that Artemis seems to be doing well.  I remember the excitement at Christmas 1968 when Apollo 8 went round the moon.

@Animedragon  The cubes' were always "stretch goals", and most of them were done on a shoestring budget and supported on a best-effort basis.  A few of them were just in the right place at the right time when the Artemis folks said, "hey, we're headed for the moon.. anyone need a ride?"  There were originally (I think) 13 that said "yes" to that offer but couldn't make various integration or test dates.  The rest have been tucked away incommunicado in their interstage bays while Artemis went through the last year and a half of launch slips.  I think at least two of them hadn't even had so much as their batteries recharged in all that time.  Not surprising that a few aren't behaving as planned.

Thank you, it was interesting to find out a bit more about those cubes.

  4. Looks like SpaceX's crewed Dragon abort test was a success.  Only crash-test dummies on board for this test but if NASA signs off on this then no more buying seats on Soyuz from the Russians and launching from Baikonur to get NASA astronauts to/from the space station.

  5. Looks like Spitzer project has set the date to end operations.

  6. Looks like the hills behind my house have turned into a volcano!

jk.. That would be pretty extreme even by 2020 standards. :)   No, this is “just“ a view of the “bobcat” fire that I took on the way home from work.

  7. Looks like things were hopping today down in Boca Chica...

The fact that the whole thing looked off-kilter because of the engine mount didn’t help the visuals.  There are mounts for three engines around a common center, but with only one engine mounted the whole thing has to tip over to get the center of thrust going through the center of mass or else the whole thing does a nice arc ending in a powered dive into the ground.  The physics works, and obviously the software can handle it, but it looked... dangerous.  :)

The thing that impressed me was the fact that this is just about a third of the top half of the full stack that’s going to eventually put things in space.  That’s going to be one impressive launch!  A lot of them actually.  I mean, the whole thing is supposed to be reusable after all.

  8. Los Angeles city has shut down bars, nightclubs, movie theaters, gyms, and fitness centers.  Grocery stores, pharmacies, and food banks will remain open. Restaurants are allowed to serve take-out, but no dine-in service.

Santa Monica ordered the temporary closure of its pier.

Even some Las Vegas casinos are shutting down.

If nothing else the economic fallout from all this will be significant.

The bars/restaurants & carryout/drive thru situation is the same here. Walmarts & Krogers are shortening their hours of operation so they have more time for restocking & cleaning. Some local communities are recommending 8:00 pm - 5:00 am curfews for nonessential activities.

  9. Love that OP for Beyond the Boundary.I personally like that style of animation.  It is well done visually, the lyrics complement the anime well, and that last line ...迷いながらも君を見つけたよ

    Good stuff.

  10. Lunch was kind of a good news, bad news thing today.  Went for "sushi" (sashimi), which is a good thing.. Yum!  Was too hungry though and swallowed a bit wrong, which sent some wasabi UP into the back of my nose instead of down where it was supposed to go!  That'll sure clear your sinuses!  Thought I was going to die!  :D

Moral of the story:  treat that stuff with respect and enjoy it properly.  Otherwise.. watch out!

First time I tried sushi my friend in high school told me to eat it with a big gob of wasabi on top... went straight to the sinuses 😳

  11. M20 folks doing an EDL ORT today.

Translation: Mars 2020, aka Perseverance, folks doing an Entry, Descent, and Landing Operational Readiness Test today.  At work I swim in an acronym sea. :)

I was always more of a Stargate guy (at least when I was a child, then I somehow dropped all of it).

On an unrelated note, don't link to that 'newspaper' 😂

I kind of did the same with Stargate.  The first couple/few seasons were ok, but it succumbed to the mindset that said every season had to be "better" than the last and eventually went off the rails entirely.  By the time the Ori came along I had pretty much stopped watching.

As for embarrassing media outlets, at least you don't have FOX.  :D

  16. Mom's been bingeing ST:TNG.  I've been playing, "I can name that episode in <x> lines".  :D

  23. Nice talk from AMD at CES.  Looks like AMD is not done yet.  In fact, (CEO) Su says that 2020 will be even better than 2019.  Dunno, that's a hard act to follow, but it'll certainly be interesting to see them go for it. 🍿
