I actually learned something interesting the other day about a coin I'd never heard of. 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin ~ which is apparently the rarest coin in the world, illegal to own and there is only 1. The 1 is legal to be owned though and I think it last sold for like 19 million dollars or something @.@ 

I've heard the St Gaudens coins can be expensive.  We're talking price-of-a-house expensive so I don't follow the market but I heard of one that had a $20 face value going for over $100k.  It wasn't even unique either.  It was one of like 3 million that were minted in a particular year (that I don't recall) sometime back in the 1920s.  At those kinds of prices it'll be .. a while before I can play in that market!

I think there are certain years of them that are different too because the one I heard about there is only 1 that is legal to be owned and it said it was the 1933 Double Eagle one. It's kinda wild a coin is illegal to own lol 

I think I've seen the other year ones too and yeah those look crazy priced >_> I'd be scared to own that because I'm the type of person who loses small things LOL

Oh yes, there's all sorts of things that bear on prices.  The art on them is one of the big factors.  It changes occasionally and some designs - or artists - are more popular than others.  Certain years are considered more desirable just for the year.. coins minted in 1969 (the year of the first Apollo moon landing) or 1963 (JFK assassination) do get a price bump for example.  The number of coins minted every year is different as well, so coins from certain years are just more or less rare compared to others.

For gold coins one of the big factors was that prior to 1933 the US was on a gold standard, meaning gold was actually used as everyday money.  But then in 1933 the government was looking for money to help get through the Great Depression.  The government stopped minting gold coins and passed a law requiring everyone to exchange all the gold in circulation with I.O.Us (paper dollars).  The coins were then melted down into bullion to give to the banks.  The only coins that escaped were ones that were lost, illegally hidden from exchange/confiscation, or in foreign possession out of the country.  Even a lot of coins in foreign possession were voluntarily returned for exchange.  The law also made it illegal for any US citizen to own pretty much any gold.  Some exceptions were made for pre-1933 foreign coins that had numismatic value, but basically private possession of gold was outlawed.  That also caused a huge drop in the demand for gold worldwide, which in turn caused a bit of a drop in gold prices, and a lot of selling of gold (buying of other assets).  A lot of gold coins worldwide, even foreign ones, were also melted down and turned in to bullion.  Needless to say all this made any gold coins from pre-1933 relatively scarce.

The St Gaudens coin you were talking about was probably from 1932 or 1933.  Those had been minted but not yet released to circulation when the law recalling all gold was passed, making them illegal to own.  It wasn't until I think President Ford passed a law allowing US citizens to own gold again that any gold coins started coming back to the US, but of course even then they were relatively rare, with a commensurate price premium.

The other big factor for gold (and silver) coin prices has been that it is a lot easier to create inflation by Congressional overspending and Fed interest rate manipulation when everyone is using paper as money.  They've done a lot of both in the decades since 1933.  (Especially recently!!)  So much so that by now the dollar is so worthless that something like a St. Gaudens that had a $20 face value back then is now priced at $3300 just on metal content alone, before any collectable consideration whatsoever.   Some people buy gold and silver coins exclusively for the gold and silver, as a hedge against such inflation.

 

As an aside on inflation, even in my own lifetime I remember as a kid my mom giving me a $5 bill to go pick up some groceries for her on the way home from school.  This was the 70s.  Back then a loaf of bread was about 20 cents.  Eggs were about 80 cents/dozen.  Milk was about $1.50/gal.  I'd skim off about 15 cents for a candy bar or ice cream cone for my services.    In todays-dollar terms that would be about $3, $5, and $5, respectively, based on Ralphs/Krogers prices.  (That's with modern food production and preservation techniques too.  Back then most everything was still what today would be marketed as "organic", "non-GMO", or "fresh" - with a corresponding price premium.)  That Morgan dollar that I posted on the other day is now worth about $28.  Two or three of them would STILL buy enough of those staples for a week.

Hmmm..  I wonder if I can convince my boss to pay me in silver dollars, like they did in the old days.

I've heard about it being illegal to own gold back then before and how things would just get confiscated @.@ With that particular coin I read that some were actually hidden in a safe too and someone found them, took them to the US mint to see if they were real and they confiscated them because they weren't allowed to be privately owned X.X 

Apparently from what I've read the one I was talking about was only allowed to be owned by Prince Farouk of Saudi Arabia and WIKI says - "In 1944, Farouk purchased a 1933 double eagle, and in strict adherence with the law, his ministers applied to the United States Treasury Department for an export license for the coin. Mistakenly, just days before the mint theft was discovered, the license was granted. The Treasury Department attempted to work through diplomatic channels to request the return of the coin from Egypt, but World War II delayed their efforts for several years." about it ~ so it was able to be privately owned because he'd actually got a license for it. I also read when it resurfaced they tried to confiscate it back but a court ruled since it had originally received an export license to own it, that it was legal to be privately owned and the person was able to keep it o:

This week I have finally finished my Jungkook collection! ôヮô I know this a lot of Kpop merch but I've been collecting it since 2017 and in the last 2 weeks I've finished with everything I can find that is available for Jungkook merch! There will be more soon I'm sure since he finished military service and will be making a new album but at current I've gotten all that I know of ＼（＾○＾）人（＾○＾）／

In the first picture I bought the pieces for the sunflower tree you see and created it myself to match with my sunflower theme. 
In the second picture all of the Golden merch is brand new from this week and the albums I bought today. 
In the fourth pic the "JK" letters I bought this past Thursday to finish off the wall. 
The sixth picture the RM and JK plushies are new. There is also a matching game photo in a pretty pink frame I have with my bestie friend there @Sakura ヽ(^◇^*)/
In picture #8 the Daily BTS is brand new and I just got it last week. 
Picture #9 the red BTS bag came as a freebie gift when I purchased my Golden albums so it's also new from today.
Photo 10 all of the black hearts I bought last week to finish off with decorating that wall and my sister helped me hang them. 
In the 12th photo the top black and white picture is brand new, and the butterflies are too. these were recommended to me by Sakura and I ended up buying them because I thought they fit well (*^ -^*)

Mainly girl groups like BlackPink, Twice, Red Velvet and some Aespa. I did collect a little bit of BTS and Big Bang too. I would mostly buy albums because the stuff from Weverse and other official websites is really expensive and then the added shipping costs it's just a lot.

I know what you mean, the weverse site is very expensive, especially with shipping! I usually go for getting things off Mercari or eBay.

I know what you mean, the weverse site is very expensive, especially with shipping! I usually go for getting things off Mercari or eBay.

Got three more mission lapel pins from work.

One is for SPHEREx.  My iphone totally fails to do it justice.  What looks like an orange blob in the background is actually some sort of holograph of millions of galaxies.  You can move your head around a bit to change the view and the background will move so you can see the bits that were previously hidden behind the foreground artwork.  It makes the pin look like you are holding a small portal looking out to somewhere in deep space.  Extremely cool effect.

Got a little electronic gadget to show the power going into my portable power station.  The power station has about a 1kWh capacity and can be charged from solar but the input is only good for 15 amps.  I can get up to 4kW from the solar panels on the roof.  At 24 volts that’s up to 167 Amps but unfortunately the power station only shows the input in Watts.  It doesn’t break it down to Volts and Amps.  I can't tell when I'm getting close to (or over!) the 15 Amp limit.  The power station does have input current protection so I'm not real worried about blowing something up but knowing when I'm hitting the amps limit will tell me things like if and how much solar power I'm wasting and from that give me an idea if maybe I should think about getting an extra battery for the power station and how big it should be.  Or maybe just tell me that it wouldn't be worth it at all.  So I got a little gadget to put inline on the wire connecting the panels to the power station to let me monitor things in a bit more detail.
