efaardvark
Got a refrigerator magnet and a sicker for Korea's KPLO mission, otherwise known as "Korean Lunar Pathfinder Orbiter"... (The spacecraft is Korean but NASA has a super-sensitive "ShadowCam" instrument aboard and JPL's Deep Space Network is providing communications and data processing for the mission.)
efaardvark
Woke up Monday to a dead car battery. Happy Monday! Not only that but my backup/jumper battery/telescope power station that I keep in the garage was dead as well. (The grey monster in the back there in the pic.) Tried various things to resuscitate it but it won’t hold a charge no matter what I do. On the recommendation of a coworker I went and bought one of the newer ones with a lithium battery. He had one and says it works great. We’ll see. It certainly is smaller and lighter than the old lead-acid boat anchor it is replacing. My car is a hybrid so it doesn’t need the cranking amps for a starter motor like a traditional gas car. Mine is more like an EV. The “auxiliary” battery (as Toyota calls it) just needs to be able to supply enough juice to boot the car’s computer and run it for long enough to get it through its boot checklist and trip the relays that connect to the car’s main “traction” battery. Pretty much anything should work. I still have to find a replacement to power the telescope though.

Back in the 70s I used to create cardboard cut-out models like that. They were quite popular at children's holiday clubs. One of the ones I made was for the Apollo CSM, but my Lunar Lander was far too complicated for the children. The chocolate bar looks good, did they do them for any of the other characters?

efaardvark
They were giving these out at the open house this year. Each point of interest had its own card like this describing the site. This one is for the Space Flight Operations Facility, also known as the center of the universe since it is where all the data from all of NASA’s far-flung deep space probes gets sent to be processed and then sent out to the scientists and engineers controlling them. They had a few left over so I grabbed a couple. (Front and back.) Edited May 12, 2023 by efaardvark

After the reboot(s) & live action destroyed the franchise? No. But back then I was watching stuff like Danger Mouse and Animaniacs. I think that was also the era of Ren and Stimpy. The Tick fit right in.

Animedragon
While going round my local supermarket getting my weekly shopping I saw this on the shelf, we anime fans would know it better as Pocky, so I bought a packet to see if it's as good as the Real Pocky I got from a Japanese food shop when I was working in central London. And, yes it's pretty good, the only downside being that it's milk chocolate instead of plain.
efaardvark
The nearby "Ralphs" supermarket (owned by Kroger and the market share leader here in SoCal) has a decently-stocked "asian" isle that includes actual Glico Pocky in several flavors. I occasionally snag a box of the matcha green tea flavor but I've seen chocolate banana, strawberry cream, cookies and cream, and of course chocolate there as well.
Animedragon
I got some strawberry Pocky from the aforementioned Japanese food store and from a stall at an anime con I attended, it was nice but my favourite is the dark chocolate flavour. From the reactions of my friends and workmates when I've offered them some Pocky English people aren't really ready for the cullinary delights of Pocky. They took one stick of Pocky and declined a second one.

efaardvark
Some relatives from out of state are visiting and one of them brought me a 3d dragon. It is fully articulated; each segment, including the head, tail, and legs, are moveable. It was probably printed as one piece because the segment links are solid. Post-print cleanup & detailing must have been a PITA but as a result the finished product is solid and pretty impressive, though there's still quite a bit of 3d-printed artifacting when you get up close. (I might try brushing it lightly with a bit of acetone to see if it softens and blurs out that last a little.) It has some heft to it too. No skimping on the infill here. Props on the choice of color filament too. Not sure if it was all from one spool or not (multicolored spools are a thing) but either way it worked out nice.
