I have the feeling that we won’t get a really clear picture of things until we’re given a more detailed explanation of the zodiac curse & it’s connection to the legend. One thing we learned this week is that Soma members who don’t correspond to a zodiac animal at least have a chance at a normal childhood, while the cursed children all suffer some degree of neglect from their parents & seem to be regarded as Akito’s “pets”. Her approach seems to be convincing them that they are useless/worthless so they should love her unconditionally for any attention she shows them even if it’s abusive, because it’s all they can hope for. She seems to have particularly targeted Yuki. His helping Tohru as a child appears to be the defining moment in realizing he can have value apart from Akito. I also think Akito’s particular dislike of Momiji is because he continues to act cheerful inspite of his family situation Shigure is very difficult to read. He seems to relish the role of a scoundrel/troublemaker. I don’t think he’s actually malicious but seems to accept people getting hurt as a necessity. Seems like he thinks Tohru can maybe “break the curse” as an outsider who can touch & change the hearts of others. As much as I dread seeing what Akito will wind up doing, I think the real heartache will be a result of the changing relationship between Tohru, Yuki & Kyo. For the record, as much as I have come to sympathize for Yuki the past couple weeks, I’m still rooting for Kyo.

@Koshigaya23 I also started buying anime tapes in the 90s. I was in my early 20s at the time & had my first regular job. Early series I remember include Ranma 1/2, Slayers, Project Ako, Tenchi Universe & Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Went to Suncoast weekly. As you said, proved to be a very expensive hobby. I think my first DVD purchase was either Outlaw Star or Sabre Marionette J.

After watching episode 7. As if we needed more reason to dislike Akito. Dang, she’s twisted.

Didn’t really care for this week’s episode. Not much humor & this series serious side rarely appeals to me since I feel little actual empathy for the characters. Also apparently my disdain for politics extends to the school level, at least as it was portrayed here. Hopefully next week will be back to the lighter side of things.

I’m on the current episode 7. There are some similarities, but reminds me of Wiseman’s Grandchild mire than anything. If you want something similar to Noukin I would recommend Endro or Bofuri (both completed) or Princess Connect Re:Dive or My Next Life as a Villainess.(both ongoing)

Given the context of your list I assume you mean the version from the 90s. Was wondering if you had checked out the more comprehensive 2015 version & if so your thoughts.

@Koshigaya23 The original A-ko was one of the first anime I bought on VHS & the soundtrack is one of the few anime cds I own. The follow ups didn’t have the same appeal for me though (Cinderella Rhapsody is probably my favorite of those). I’d love to see it get a reboot with modern production values, though I think Kill la Kill is probably the closest we’ll ever get. The 2nd Ranma 1/2 movie is my favorite because it dedicated a scene to each of the secondary ships (Shampoo/Mousse, Ukuo/Ryoga & Nabiki/Kuno). Plus the fanservice with the female cast mostly in swimsuits or harem outfits I’ve tried a couple times getting into the Lupin III tv series, but really didn’t click with me. I did like Castle of Cagliostro though & intend to check out the other movies & A Woman Named Fujiko Mine. A couple that didn’t make my list but still are really nostalgic for me: Tenchi Muyo in Love Dirty Pair: Project Eden Devil Hunter Yohko

While this was more of a Yuki episode, this is probably the scene that made me smile the most

Gleipnir really upped the ecchi factor with this past weekend’s episode but I’m still enjoying it. The new girl is sweet & may seem more compatible with Shuichi, but I still think him & Clair are the better pairing and complete each other.

@Wedgy just out of curiosity. I haven’t read the manga so have no idea where we are on the overall story. Do you think 25 or so episodes in season 2 will finish things or will we likely have to wait for a season 3?

My thoughts on Akito is that on one hand she was raised believing that she was essentially a god as far as the Soma family was concerned anyway. But at the same time with no regard as to her individuality, just the role she was expected to play. The result is an arrogant, self centered but miserable person (if “god” is unhappy, what right does anyone else have to be happy?) The impression I get is that Shigure is actually trying to use Tohru to teach Akito a lesson. That kindness can be stronger than hate & hope can be stronger than despair. It’s a risky gamble considering just how unstable Akito is & even though Tohru puts on a cheerful face, there’s a lot trauma beneath the surface. His comment in one earlier episode about being willing to be hated suggests he fully expects Tohru, Kyo and/or Yuki to get hurt (physically or emotionally) in the process.
