A rare case where I think the live action version was more popular than the anime version

If we’re talking the Fall 2021 season of anime that’s just wrapping up my favorites were: 86 • Mushoku Tensei • Demon Slayer • Ranking of Kings • Mieruko-chan

While I don’t particularly dislike Ghibli films, I don’t feel the affection for them that most anime fans seem to. Though in my case I don’t feel that it’s linked to SoL elements (SoL series actually have a pretty decent track record with me). For me I think it’s more about my general preference for series over movies when it comes to anime. While movies generally have higher production values (quality of animation & soundtrack) the shorter runtime doesn’t allow for as much story & character development. This is particularly a problem for standalone films. And if you don’t care for the central characters, you’re largely out of luck (there’s a surprising number of anime where I actually find a member of the supporting cast more interesting or entertaining than the Mains). And In cases where the movie is a sequel or side-story to an existing series, sometimes there’s an over reliance on CGI or gimmicks to try to make it stand out.

I keep hearing good things about March Comes in Like a Lion, will have to add it to my PTW list. The Fruits Basket remake (2019 - 2021) hit me in the feelz consistently over it’s run , frequently causing me to tear up or lay awake at night. Funny thing is the original didn’t do a thing for me, barely even remember it. While the difference is probably mainly due to the superior adaption, there’s also no denying things that have happened in my life in recent years have made me more sensitive to emotional & existential concerns. Of course that’s also why I try to balance out some of the heavier series (Made in Abyss, Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga) with lighter series (Yuru Camp, Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun) so I don’t get too depressed/brooding)

Pretty much all about family. Me, my sister & her family (hubby & kids) had dinner at my sister in law’s place last night & then all spent the afternoon at my sister’s today. Reminiscing, holiday movies & eating. Got my sister & nephews on board to go to Spiderman Far from Home over New Year’s weekend. Brother in law is still an undecided Of course being a huge comic book nerd from the 70s through the 90s (Spiderman & Xmen in particular) I had to see it opening weekend. Fortunately ran into some folks that although strangers turned out to be kindred spirits and enjoy some nerd talk IRL for a change. Peace on Earth, Good Will to Mankind indeed (and I’ll throw in an “Excelsior” for good measure)

I don’t have any family or IRL friends that are into anime, which is why this site is so important to me. Any anime discs/merch I gotta buy myself

I assume the anime application of “grind” is the MC needing to train or “level up” in order to take on tougher opponents. In that case a couple recs would be So I’m a Spider, So What?! and I’m Standing on a Million Lives Log Horizon and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime might work too.

A lot people consider the term “space opera” to be on a grander scale. Examples: Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato; Captain Harlock; Arcadia of My Youth; Legend of the Galactic Heroes; Banner/Crest of the Stars. Most of Leiji Matsumoto’s work. For series more like Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star: Coyote Ragtime Show; Trigun; Gun x Sword; Space Dandy; Edens Zero. Angel Links takes place in the same universe/reality as Outlaw Star but not fondly remembered. You might also like Vivy Fluorite Eye’s Song or Astra Lost in Space.

Way of the House Husband is along the same lines. Probably Knights of the Zodiac. That one got a lot of hate because the original series (Saint Seiya) is apparently very nostalgic for a lot of people. I don’t believe I ‘ve ever seen any of it though (if I did, I don’t remember it). As far as Netflix exclusives, the most promising one for me was Dorohedoro, though it desperately needs a continuation. So of course, one hasn’t been announced

It’s an older slice-of-life drama/comedy about a college campus club focused on otaku interests (anime, manga, gaming, cosplay, model kits). Basically the joys & stigma of being an otaku while preparing to enter “grown-up” society (career path, relationships, etc). I believe there were 2 seasons, though I’ve only seen the first one. Thought it was decent. There was also a spin off series (Kujibiki Unbalance) which was an adaption of a fictional anime series the characters in Genshiken were fans of. That one was pretty weak and felt like a bad parody of anime tropes.
