  1. I'm getting sucked in again. I was doing so well too. Hadn't even thought about the game for ages.. then I discovered a directory full of old stuff while cleaning up some files. Ran the old .jar.. it worked. Help me....
  2. "Your Ubuntu 17.10 is up to date, but there's a newer version 18.04.  Would you like to upgrade?"

It seemed so innocuous, so easy.  6.5 hours and a clean install later I'm basically back to where I started, though with working HDMI sound (and a LVM layer underneath it all so I can make a snapshot before clicking that "ok" button.)  GPU stuff seems a little snappier too, though I haven't actually done any benchmarks.

      Sounds confusing, right.

  3. Right. Like to hear you explain that one to the emergency services personnel. What they really need is seatbelts. Seriously though, wireless headsets will soon be a thing. For a price of course. No games for me this weekend. Had to help with a yard sale yesterday and I'm upgrading my computer today. Currently at 1507 of 2052 files downloaded on an upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04. 17.10 had a problem with HDMI sound that I'm hoping to fix with the upgrade. If that doesn't work then I've got Manjaro on a USB stick as backup. (I tried a live boot of Manjaro and I know that works. Giving Canonical one last chance tho.)
  4. Had to let someone go at work today.  :(

Nothing like starting the weekend on a eft-up note...

Sorry to hear that, it's never easy (T_T)

  5. Same here. The first season seemed just another HS romance. Worse, it is boring HS drama/romance. I dropped it about halfway through, and I initially had NO interest in After Story as a continuation. It was only when I heard the good reviews that After Story was getting that I watched that, then I liked that so much that I went back and watched the first season. Clannad is definitely the weaker of the two. The characters don't even know what they're doing most of the time. (Not exactly an unusual situation for people in HS after all.) But Clannad is necessary setup for After Story, which is excellent IMHO. When/if you get to the end of After Story, go back to that "I hate this city" at the beginning of Clannad. I think you'll hear it from a whole different POV. You might even want to watch the whole season 1 over again.. and maybe even enjoy doing so. The other, bigger problem - for me anyway - with Clannad was the dubbing. I disliked the English voicing of Nagisa especially. If you can handle it I strongly recommend the Japanese audio version.. with subs if necessary, but the Japanese voicing gives Nagisa a significantly different personality than I got from the dub version. Much better IMHO.
  6. Umamusume. Kind of fun. Totally not serious. Good for relaxing after work. I've been watching it mainly at night before bed and the first 4 episodes have put me to sleep twice now.
  7. I repair what I can. I'm not above buying new stuff, but that's kind of a last resort, and I am always willing to spend a bit more in the first place for something that is well-built and can be repaired over cheap throw-away stuff. I'm not very creative however. I can build and fix stuff. I have a garage full of tools, including a table saw, a milling machine, a lathe, and a drill press. I can compile a linux kernel, program a microcontroller, or solder a circuit board. I helped design and build the 4KW solar power system on my roof. Just don't ask me to decorate or accessorize anything. If it needs painting you'll have to tell me what color. I draw the line at plumbing though. God I hate plumbing projects!
  8. TFW you realize that you have browser tabs open for both the Mycroft project page and the GLaDOS wikipedia entry.  😱

  9. Talk about missing the point. Like I said, these days E3 seems to me more about big-company profits and milking franchises than about fun and games. But yes, I would like to see more games for linux. Not that there aren't good games that run there already... more than I have time to play tbh. (Though I try my best. ) They just aren't covered at E3.
  10. I'm having a hard time getting excited about anything out of E3 this year. While I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a new Elder Scrolls in the (far) future, even that vaporous "announcement" is tempered by the company's non-support of my computer. TBH, I'm just as excited to hear that the original Wasteland is getting a 30th anniversary update/remaster. (I played the original so there's a nostalgia factor at play there. YMMV.) Every year E3 seems to get more about big-company titles, and those are pretty much all about farming franchise fans for $$$ with DLC and other (not so) thinly-veiled subscription models. Fun and games? Not so much. Maybe for shareholders I guess. This reddit thread pretty much sums up the parts of E3 that were even potentially interesting to me. Pretty thin... The other thing that was vaguely interesting was the talk (however vague) about "next gen" consoles from MS. Let the PS5/Xbone2 speculations begin! And speaking of consoles, I'm still interested in what Sony has to say regarding PS4 (and especially PSVR) too, though the Sony BMG rootkit fiasco back in the day and their general inability to grok security over the years means I'm not a big fan of that company either.
  11. Hey, you got a full 35 seconds. What more do you want?
  12. Look at the amp (current) rating on your charger. Some of them are 2A or more, some of them are less than 0.5A. If the charger is the kind that gives you a USB plug, the older USB1 and 2 specs only go to 0.5A. The newer USB3 can go up to 1.5A, but a lot of the chargers go to 2.0, 2.1, or even 3.0A. *IF* you have a charger that can deliver the current then you can charge your phone faster, assuming the phone/device itself supports it. For Apple devices, if you have a newer iPhone 8, 8 plus, or X, you actually can fast-charge, though you'll need a new USB-C cable and/or power supply... https://gizmodo.com/we-tested-iphone-fast-charging-and-you-should-definitel-1820483924 For most devices it ultimately depends on the device. All modern devices have sensors and charging circuitry in the phone that limits the rate of charge to something that's safe for the battery. If they get too hot then the charging circuit will throttle the charge rate down regardless of what the power supply or the cable can deliver. (See "exploding phones", above.)
  13. Not much to say today. I'm interested in E3, but have no interest in the opener, EA. From what I've heard their press conference/ wasn't worth listening to anyway, even for people who can tolerate the company. I figured I'd start looking for reports from the floor tomorrow. Not that I'm all that excited about MS either, or even Bethesda. I don't pay much attention to companies that don't make software for my computer(s). Anyone say anything interesting about linux games?
  14. IIRC the mod just re-skinned the C4 explosives.
  15. The physics/chemistry says that if the battery is getting warm then it is being stressed. This will shorten its life. (And in the special case of li-ion batteries, too much heat buildup can cause them to rapidly break down internally and violently destroy themselves, and often anything nearby as well.*) If you have the time then it is always better to slow-charge your battery-operated devices. Also, whether you charge it fast or slow, a battery's life is directly related to the number of charge/discharge cycles. If you're quick-charging because you are continually running your battery down and always needing to charge it then that will shorten its life expectancy as well. That said, modern batteries are designed with modern devices and use patterns in mind. With occasional exceptions due to manufacturing defects current batteries are fairly tolerant of abuse, and most cellphone batteries will last the expected 18 month product life-cycle regardless. If you're the kind of person that upgrades every year or every other year then it probably doesn't matter much how often or how quickly you charge. If you're the kind of person who upgrades maybe twice a decade then you might want to be nicer to your battery and charge it more slowly. *Because this reminded me of the GTA cellphone mod... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GhODn4FRoE
  16. Anyone going to the JPL open house this weekend?  If so, it looks like it is going to be a sunny day!  Good weather is nice, but it also means it'll likely be hot as well.  There will be water and shade, but also queues outside the popular venues, so bring your patience as well as your ticket.  Hope you have fun!

This is the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's open house in Pasadena, California that we do every year.  It is a local thing for the most part, though we do get a few people coming in from out of state as well.  It is extremely popular, especially with the kids, so crowd control is an issue.  A few years ago attendance got up to over 40,000 for the weekend.  It was hot that year too, with temperatures over 100F.  We had to start issuing tickets to the event to limit the number of visitors as a safety measure.  (Tickets are free, but limited in number.)

  17. Capitalism, definitely. Real capitalism though, with lots of competition. Not this "crony" capitalism nonsense that basically regulates competition out of existence for those companies that can get their rules embedded in the regulations. That's just a special form of fascism, with companies running the government for their own purposes. Capitalism is people freely exchanging goods and services such that each trade results in both parties thinking they got the better deal. If people don't have real choices, including the option to buy competing products, or even to not buy anything, then it isn't real capitalism.
  18. It was one of my favorites when I was younger. What can I say? Kind of random though. If you like FLCL then you might like Wizards. Star Wars fans might (or might not) want to note the bit-part by Mark Hamil.
  19. I agree that After Story probably isn't harem, but you'll never convince me that Clannad (1st season) isn't. Type "harem" into any anime search engine and it'll be there, so I'm not the only one either. In fact, this is the first time I've seen anyone try to claim it isn't.
  20. Possibly? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076929/
  21. I don't blame you! http://www.anivision.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Denpa-Onna-to-Seishun-Otoko.jpg Just passin' thru. Came late to the thread... reminds me of that Tom Petty video for some reason. Carry on (though if it were me I'd avoid the cake )....
  22. Desert: a scoop of Ben & Jerry's strawberry shortcake ice cream smooshed between two (frozen) pancakes. ? ? ? Yum!
