  1. I was today years old when I discovered there are blue horses in minecraft,
  2. 95F / 35C and dry. Also on fire - literally - so add in a bit of smoke for that mesquite tang to the air. Not even noon yet. Probably get to 3 digits later today.
  3. I am as well. This is the point in the season when the currently-airing shows release their 3rd episode so usually about now I binge the first few episodes of the season to decide what I want to add to my watchlist. Then at the end of the season I’ll binge-watch the rest of the episodes of the shows that make the list.
  4. Took a quick peek at "Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary". Based on the first couple episodes I'm getting a somewhat Hyouka vibe, though so far the two main characters aren't nearly as fun to watch as Oreki and Chi-chan were. きになる
  5. Looks like fire season has started here in L.A.
  6. Presidential assassination attempt.  Global Windows outage.  Rumors of a Xi stroke.  Russia sending advanced anti-ship missiles to the Houthi.  What a week.   Who had all that on their bingo card?  Who had any of that on their bingo card?

Anything else I should know about before I attempt the weekend?  😟

@Sakura I checked the space weather site and there's no civilization-ending solar mass ejections headed towards Earth at the moment.  That would have been my first guess but that doesn't look likely atm.  :)

However, I did hear on the news that China has sent PLA troops to Russian-allied Belarus for a series of combat drills.  They're doing their "drills" near the city of Brest, which is just across the border from Poland and only about 17 miles from the Ukraine border.  So my guess is that somebody does an "oops" during one of these "drills", fires a missile in the wrong direction, hitting either NATO troops lined up along the border in Poland or Ukrainian troops in the battle zone and starting WWIII.  I could be wrong.  :D

Oh yeah great, ww3 is JUSTTTTT what we need right now lol ~ I don't understand what is all going on with Russia right now.. there is honestly so much with them I CAN'T keep up with it all and remain sane, but I was watching a video saying they were going to start using nuclear weapons or something and that it had the US all shook up? They seem to like to talk and run their mouth a lot but I really wouldn't put it as out of the question for them to do something crazy like try to launch nuclear weapons. It feels like Putin always has something he is trying to prove and is crazy enough to do it x.x

Mostly Putin is getting older and is slowly losing his hold on power. Its usually why his opponents end up commuting suicide in a zipped up duffel bag with a gunshot to the back of their head. The Russians are also very keen on having a warm water port they can control to boost up their navy. The whole fleet is in bad shape and dire need of dry docking repairs. They have no way to do this at this point as their floating dry dock sank.

With sanctions on Russian export and imports their economy isn't in great shape too leading to some discontent within the power structure. If it gets bad enough I don't see Russia starting WW3 but just having Putin "die of old age" and replace him with another oligarch. Who that is will be a bit messy but we will see.

Also don't see China risking troops in Ukraine other than to train Russian conscripts on how to use China/N Korean supplied equipment. China and North Korea is starting to fire up their industries to ring out of Russia all the cash they can. That way when Russia fails at its task China will be in a stronger position to boss around Russia.  China's goal is to beef up its power in the area and risking their troops won't do that. But firing up their industries and raking in Russian cash will get their economy back and firing like it was without having to rely on exports to the US and EU as much.

Russia isn't in a good position right now with a majority of their cash coming from oil exports which China is buying at a discount. If China starts supping them weapons on top of that they get that cash back and further weaken Russia if they continue to lose.

Russia also hasn't tapped into it's more well trained troops from Moscow. Putin has been holding them as it could weaken his political position in the country. They've been grabbing people from the countryside and ex soviet territories that are allied with Russia. If they do start pulling in more conscripts from Moscow and other major cities then that should be something we should worry about.

We are kind of still in a Cold war type of situation Russia having their underclass or foreign conscripts fight Ukraine while the USA funds the Ukrainians without actively taking part. Both countries don't want to fight each other but will boast and threaten each other. If anything the Russians might just withdraw like the did in Afghanistan and say they accomplished their goal back home in the papers. But that is too way off to call at this point.

  7. In case you ever run into a caterpillar....
  8. I did something - not even sure what - this morning that messed up my back. Took some meds and since then I've just been trying to find comfortable positions that don't make my back scream.
  9. I thought I'd check out the first couple episodes of the latest season's lineup. All these isekai are starting to blur together. Getting deja vu all over again from "Failure Frame" for instance. It wasn't so long ago that we had basically the same thing with Arifureta (etc etc) after all, and just last season we had Chillin' in another world. Only two episodes in so there's still room for differentiation with "Failure". I'm wondering if we really need another version of basically the same plot tho. I'm a devotee of the 3-ep rule so there's one more to go but at this point I'm not likely to continue.
  10. There's something wrong with me. Just seeing this mentioned and now I have the narwhals song stuck in my head. I have the same problem with hampsters. File that under "you know you spend too much time on the web when ...". Carry on.
  11. While doing a bit of exploration / wandering in MC I found a town with a cleric, a weaponsmith, a fletcher, and a librarian. Decided to do some basic farming (cows, sheep, rabbits, wheat) and level up the townsfolk so I can get some equipment upgrades. There's some interesting / useful biomes nearby too so I think I'll be using it as a base of operations for resource gathering for a while as well.
  12. Yesterday I watched 13th Warrior. The blurb on the box says, The Muslim in Viking lands is a fun plot device and while the protagonist is initially clearly of the "these are barbarians" mindset he eventually changes his mind. Once we get into the serious part the story seems like it's heading in a decidedly fantasy / supernatural direction but it actually comes back around to reality in what I thought was a very satisfactory way. It's pretty old at this point and it bombed at the box office due to a lot of competition and not enough money for advertising but it is a good if underrated story that I find worth a rewatch now and then.
  13. Played some more minecraft, scouting around for a good town to turn into a base in my hardcore game. I like exploring and one of the great things I've found about the distant horizons mod is that it lets you see places that are over a day's travel away. Not only does that let me plan my expeditions better but by providing distant landmarks it also tends to keep me from getting lost so much.
  14. Started watching Sankarea. Again, I think. (I'm not sure but the first few episodes seem very familiar.) Might not finish it due to that. It's also pretty odd.. zombie-obsessed boy meets depressed girl who commits suicide by drinking boy's potion, which instead turns girl into perfect zombie gf so boy turns on air conditioning full blast and keeps girl in his room. Yeah. Like I said, pretty weird. Not the strangest anime I've ever seen overall but probably in the top 10.
  15. I don't care either. For the most part. They can rearrange the flowers all they want, but when they want the furniture moved (again) how come I'm always the one whose todo list it lands on? (Been there, done that many, many times. )
  16. Just enjoyed the view. I really like this mod. (DH) Would have been even better with a fishing rod. Unfortunately the water freezes up here.
  17. Exhausted. With the 4th falling on a thursday this year management had encouraged us to take a couple extra days of vacation and to postpone meetings and such until next week. Someone must have jinxed it however because it's not even Wednesday yet and one of our "cloud" servers that runs a bunch of our telemetry processing systems wouldn't reboot after a firmware upgrade, then the TDRSS people decided they needed emergency DSN coverage to support one of their satellites.. over a link that hasn't even been tested since 2013. (Of course it didn't work.) I still have over 150 emails that I haven't even had a chance to read yet.. and that's just for today! Taking a break now for dinner before I tackle that/those.
  18. Watched Unnamed Memory. Overall it was ok but I'm a bit upset with how the first season ends. I felt like the last episode obliterated the whole first season. The next season now has to be way better than the first to make up for it. I don't want to post a spoiler but I have to say that Tinasha & Oscar had better meet again and have an even better relationship in a way that doesn't invalidate the first season. I have some trepidation since in general I rarely find second seasons better than the first. On the other hand I feel the characters are (or will be) better positioned in their respective lives to meet again on the same level. The potential is there. It's all in Tinasha's hands now. (And the writers' of course.) I'm definitely going to be interested in seeing how it all sorts out. BTW, I never did manage to shake the feeling that Tinasha is a grown-up Yumiella. One of those things that once you see it...
  19. A bit on the warm side today.. might hit 90F / 32C. Not too bad but there was a power outage this morning so we got a bit of a late start on the air conditioning. Hope that's not a sign of things to come later in the season.

  21. I can see how it might take quite a while to learn to speak any of the Celtic languages fluently if you didn't start at a very young age. I'm a native English speaker. (Well, American... you'll find our boots on our feet not in our cars and our pants are outerwear.) My multiple-great grandparents on my father's side immigrated from Scotland however and my Highlander ancestors (Creag an Tuirc!) spoke Gaelic, another Celtic-family language. Once or twice I've tried to learn Gaelic but unfortunately failed utterly. Part of the problem for me learning Gaelic was that it is not widely spoken, so finding good teaching materials or even just someone to talk to for practice was a bit of a challenge. Languages like Spanish, German, Chinese, or Japanese are a lot more common for economic or cultural reasons so you'll often find those languages being taught in grade schools and materials for learning them readily available in public libraries. For Gaelic you're usually out of luck unless you want to go for university-level classes aimed at literature or linguistic anthropology majors. It also seemed quite difficult for me to parse. It didn't really map well to anything I already knew. Additionally, the few remaining native speakers don't all speak it the same way so there were numerous dialect differences. Not a trivial undertaking.
