Best thing to do to find friends in your local area that like anime, or anything else really is to check out some local cons. There are also event organizer type sites out there if you search on google I am sure you'll find a group that shares your interests.

Yah I started out with collecting the VHS tapes back in the day. It was much harder to get it subbed in those days though as had to get it imported from a limed set of subbers.

I started watching anime around age 5 with dbz being my first one along with SM, and Pokemon following soon after.

Ranma 1/2, and Slayers are great series. I felt Ranma had a bit better pacing though. Though Ranma was a great anime to start out with. It was among one of my first as well.

Dose your comp come with a recovery portion. If so you can always try running that to get it back to defaults if your thinking of the reinstall OS route that may help.

Gotta as far as animes with awesome soundtracks for background music I have to go with DBZ, and Inusha along with Yu Yu Hakusho for the older ones. Though if we are talking a bit newer then I have to mention No Game No Life, and SAO forsure are amazing.
