  1. That's a good list actually. There's one or two anime there I'm not a huge fan of, of only because how they progressed, but for starting out, those do give a do example of what to expect in their genre's.
  2. Technically, I've already made this thread and I may even delete the other one, but I was bored and decided to write a more thorough review. Problem is, a lot of the places I could post it are either too child friendly and would cancel some words that I think are important to say, or they won't allow for posts with as many characters as my review had, so I'm posting it here. Let me know what you think. Persona 5 is an interesting title to say the least. For starters it is the first in the series since Persona 2 to bring back the Shin Megami Tensei element of convincing monsters to join you by talking to them. This portion of gameplay is something that has been a part of the SMT universe since I can remember but I have to say, it's really downplayed here. In the most recent Shin Megami title to hit 3DS before Persona 5 came out, you could possibly die and get a game over if you chose badly enough when talking to an enemy, and it's not the first one to do it. Now while I won't say that's needed in every title that the element of converting enemies to allies in SMT games, I do think it should be worse than your opponents getting a free turn against you if you fail as the worst thing that happens. Also, in previous SMT games, there were multiple ways to make mistakes and lose an enemy conversion and in the same token, multiple ways to get them on your side. In Persona 5 there are multiple ways to fail, but for the most part, as long as you praise or give an enemy an ego boost, they'll join you, and it doesn't take long to figure that out. That's kind of a shame because it ruins one of the best elements of the game, giving your enemies a personality. If you just need to stroke their ego to get them, it feels like they aren't really their own character. But enough about that, let's talk about the visual style of the game so things can be a bit more positive. For those who may not know, the visuals are astounding, and the PS4 helps them really pop and come to life. Never can I remember such a time where I actually almost looked forward to going into a menu just to see how much effort was put into it. It's a shame then that the one you see when you go to buy medical supplies is just kind of boring compared to the rest, but at the same time, that's really only one out of many and it's still better than most menu's I've ever seen. The menu's themselves are only a small part the visual skills Atlus shows off during this game though. Playing in the dungeons, whether it be a castle, an art museum or a pyramid, it looks incredible. Atlus has probably pulled off the most stylish game you can without it feeling cheap and it's clear that they put their hearts and souls into making every area unique while still matching the Gentlemen thief idea Persona 5 is clearly based off of. There's nothing really negative I can say about it, so let's move on to battles. Battles themselves are sort of another problem the game has. For whatever reason combat feels some what floaty when impact is made. The style of it is clearly on level with the rest of the game, but I can't help but feel as though I'm not actually hitting anyone when an attack lands, at least enough of the time that it feels noticeable. This is particularly strange because Persona's 3 and 4, which were my starting points in the series, never seemed to have that problem, not even on their handheld versions. I don't know if it's because they were attempting to mirror some Sly Cooper in there, which also sometimes felt floaty when you hit something, which I suppose might be a stereotype of gentlemen thief games, but it's just not a good idea. Just because thief's like that are expected to be sneaky, doesn't mean that what they do needs to lack impact. Despite this issue constantly coming up, I honestly do enjoy combat, but if I didn't have this complaint, it would honestly be a lot better. I want attacks to feel like they hurt so that I feel stronger. Numbers dropping and raising is nice, but if it ever becomes hard to believe the numbers I'm seeing, which in Persona 5 it does, it'll take longer for me to feel strong, and I'm not a fan of that. The music in the game was kind of a mixed bag for me at first, even after first completing the game, I wasn't quite sure if I liked it enough that I'd listen to it outside of playing the game, but by the time the dancing game for Persona 5 was announced, I was all in. There's something to say about music that grows on you over time as opposed to being something you instantly want to jam out to, but I can't say one way is better than the other. Persona 4's music was largely an instant jam for me, and I don't really know if I can say which is better. Although I have to admit there are two or three songs that I jammed out to right away like the intro music and the casino music from the start of the game. Either way, the music is really fitting when you back and listen to it, and there's something to be said about making a pop sort of jam fit into an Egyptian sort of setting. All I know is, is that I can't wait to hear some of the remixes coming for next year's dance game. The story of the game is also completely amazing, but I don't know that I'd consider it the best that Persona has ever had. There's something to be said about the idea of stopping actual criminals from committing anymore crimes by having them admit to what they've done and turning themselves in, but at the same time, I feel like the game lost sight of that at some point. I mean why go from a guy like Kamoshida who physically and sexually assaults his victims, which gives you ample reason to hate him, then go a guy like Madarame who gives you reason to hate him for allowing so Yusuke's mother to die, to lying to him, to doing nothing while one his students committed suicide, all good reasons to hate him, to going after someone who isn't paying his employees right. Sure, the guy only sees his employees as ways to make money, and the fate Haru's unwanted marriage is at stake, but that does seem like quite the downgrade in stakes. Even at the start when you are at risk of being suspended and therefore risking going to jail, is just a small part of what you're trying to stop or why you're trying to stop it. Don't get me wrong, it's interesting to give the character you play as stakes at the start to increase incentive, but after the implied rape and intended suicide with Shiho in the early part of the game, do you really need that? In previous Persona's, and I hope you'll excuse me for constantly going back to them, but in previous Persona titles, the consequences always felt real, and serious. In Persona 3, the Midnight Hour is turning people into zombies and there's no promise that you can save them, in Persona 4, you are simply trying to stop successful and attempted murder and the twists at the end are great payoffs for your effort in getting far enough to see them, and great incentives you keep you going. Building and building upon what you know and making it seem worse without dropping tons of hints along the way is what made previous Persona titles, even 1 and 2 work so well. By adding in a new villain every chapter, you limit what they can do, and it's hard argue that any of them are get better after the first two, and even the second one is a slight downgrade from the first. Also, as an adult, I do find it annoying that there's this whole anti adult vibe going throughout. Persona is an older franchise, based off of an even older one, and while Atlus may not be as popular as Square, there's no way there haven't been fans since the early going here, who have grown up with the series. The anti adults vibes are kind of discouraging as adult, to the point where I wonder if that's how kids see all adults. The overarching story, the one that really starts from the beginning of the game until the end is amazing, and in fact the ending itself is one of my favorite RPG endings ever, but some of the in between bits are just not welcome. Overall, I think Persona 5 is a great game, but also I think it tried to downplay certain elements of previous titles in the SMT universe and it does have a few other issues worth noting. It's also the first main series Persona game I can think of that I didn't see as better than the previous title. If I were to score it though, it's still pretty high, a 4.5/5 for sure, and it's probably a perfect 5 for anyone who has never played a previous Persona title to compare it to. If you're going to be introduced to Persona, this is the game to do it with, but has someone who as played all the previous Persona titles and several SMT games in general, I just think it's lacking a bit compared to previous entries that I might give a perfect score.
  3. The only thing I can think of is doing something that carries meaning to you, like your name on your favorite console or PC, or a twist on a game series you like or character you connect with.
  4. That's actually not it, which makes me think I might be mixing shows up in my head. I did forget about that one though and I actually do want to catch up so thank you for that. The one I'm thinking about, might have started up with a believed to be successful assassination attempt of a character who was a princess and I think she came from a group of humans who moved to Mars and now she's being helped by another human while trying to hide her identity. If I remember correctly, the students who are the main characters were watching a parade when the assassination attempt happened. They were also at one point fighting a guy who could use fog to make himself harder to hit, and after he eventually lost he was killed by his subordinate who has a thing for the princess character. That's really all I can remember.
  5. I can't think of the name of an anime, even though I think it should be obvious. What I remember about it, was that it was a mech anime, where the pilot was somewhat reluctant to ride his mech that I can't remember the name of which would really help. In one episode I remember he was fighting at an airstrip and some other minor characters started livestreaming it before the government cut them off. It was at the end of that fight that one of the enemy characters was revealed to be someone who looked human that another whose name I again can't remember knew. I know there were these large towers that played an important role but I can't remember what they were called. I want to say the anime was pretty recent though, within the last year and a half for sure.
  6. I mean as you mentioned, Japan already does this and it seems to work fine. I'd be okay with it, so long as they didn't change anime in the wrong ways going forward to keep it main steam.
  7. At what point did I say anything about grammar? FYI means "For Your Information" which is used to either state an opinion rudely, or to state something that is fact. You obviously know English well enough to know how to use it on a forum, so you should know to check meanings of certain phrases before you start using them if you aren't certain how to use them or what context they carry. Even if you think you know, it never hurts to look to make sure. Even those who speak English as a first language do that. The statement of "it's not my first language" is a hard sell for me because of that, caution should always be used when a second or third, or whatever number a language is for a person just in case. It also doesn't help that I had no way of knowing English wasn't your first language so that defense comes off as too little too late because I already said what I said.
  8. I don't if I can agree with idea of hardly ever giving an anime a rating of a 9. That sounds to me personally like either something is either being held in to high of a regard for anything to reach, or you are simply taking the medium too seriously and not allowing yourself to enjoy it enough. We are certainly allowed our difference of opinion though, so Ill leave it at that. That said, I don't see how you couldn't connect with these characters enough to see where I'm coming from even a bit, but again, maybe in a few years time, you will. Point is, I guess you and I will never see eye to eye on this show, and that's fine.
  9. I personally don't believe in the term "guilty pleasure" because it makes the assumption that we should feel bad about what we enjoy and that's just odd to say the least. With that in mind, can we keep even the censored profanity away from this forum please. There's absolutely no reason for it. Even if it uses elements of a manga, calling Edge of Tomorrow an anime adaptation is mislabeling it because the concept itself as the film uses it is actually closer to groundhog day, and it's clearly not interested in any association with Japanese media. Also giving an FYI for an opinion, even a popular one, is a bit stuck up sounding in my opinion, and treating an opinion like fact is just a little self indulgent. As for anime adaptations, the actual point of this thread, the only one I can recommend that makes even a little bit of sense, is probably the Ruroni Kenshin films. I didn't personally enjoy them, but I know a lot of people did, and difference of opinion is kind of the point of a thread like this, so long as we don't throw our opinions around like they are fact.
  10. I've been watching some older anime lately because I dropped almost everything this season, and I came to a new conclusion about dubbed anime that I hadn't quite noticed before. I feel like I've said it, but that I haven't really understood it as well as I do now. I started with anime from way back in the early parts of anime dubbed at all until something as recent as 5 years ago, and because I got to see the progression for voice work over the years. I've said it before, but having a better understanding of it really puts into perspective, but dubbed voice acting has really improved as time has gone on. If you look at anime from say the time DBZ and even Pokemon really started to take the world by storm, and look at some of the most recent dubbed episodes for either of those series, the improvement is almost palpable. Then there are some anime whose voice acting will help it stand the test of time not only more so than it's Japanese counterpart, but may even help more than it's animation. At the same token, there some anime that came out around the same time as say, Cowboy Bebop and Ruroni Kenshin that completely are ruined by dubs. For example, I love Eureka Seven, as I've mentioned a few times, but watching it dubbed is entirely ruined because JYB gets hired to play kid characters like Renton and completely ruins them, even if the rest of the voice acting is high quality and some of the best that can be expected at it's time. Even now as much I'm a fan of Yokai Watch, I cannot stand to watch it dubbed because JYB does that same voice and it ruins the whole show and Eureka Seven for me at the same time. There are other examples out there, like the Ocean dubs of DBZ, you have to wonder how anyone thought that would ever work long term, but with that in mind, I'm okay with it in a sense. Having that variation in quality and style of voices really gives everything it's own memory and uniqueness that subs, don't really seem to even aim for. I don't know, maybe I'm weird but I like things to change. When they do I feel like they are more involved, and that's what I like about dubs.
  11. Yeah this is the one, and now that I think about it, I'm actually kind of glad I saw it, because I am so hyped.
  12. I know that it's sappy, that it's whole intent to make you cry and to tug at heart strings and all that, and it manages it. I can't quite agree with an 8/10 rating though, simply because I watched the anime when it came out which was a few years ago and I thought that like most anime, it was just something I'd think about from time to time, where all my emotions would just kind of come back for a minute, and then I'd move on. With Anohana though, this has not been the case. I have looked back at it and still remember it very well, and even watching a trailer for the movie of it, got me to reconnect with it on a level that I think only the original Full Metal Alchemist has been able to do. I actually cried again just watching that trailer because of how much this anime impacted me. Perhaps it's something that people who only watched it recently can't understand, I don't know, maybe in a year or two's time you'll do the same, but for an anime to make that kind of impact on me, it has to be one of the best. If I were to rate Anohana, it would be nothing short of a 9.5/10. The only I could complain about it a little of animation quality drops for brief moments, but overall, it's simply an amazing show.
  13. That's really hard to say, the last episode of a series is 90 percent how most people see an entire show. In that regard, that most likely means your favorite last episode is from your favorite last anime. With that in mind, I might be the one of the few to whom that doesn't apply because my last favorite of any anime is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and if you don't know why, I highly recommend you watch all the Ghost in the Shell up to that point. If you're curious as to what my favorite anime is since I brought it up, it's the Original Full Metal Alchemist.
  14. I think it's pretty bad. The show is one bad choice after another, and a series of overreactions leading to an end that is just too over the top.
  15. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Did I do that right??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
  16. I do wish they had done better than mobile graphics though. I mean they took assets from a mobile game called Adventures of Mana. Also it really sucks that the entire trilogy of Seiken Dansetsu is out in Japan on switch and we get this.
  17. I did some research and it's more than that. The upcoming movie is part of a trilogy of films that will retell the entire first series by the end. Although I expect it will have a few different voice actors, since Takeshi Aono who played Renton's Grandfather passed away in 2012.
  18. Okay so between this post and the first one I've got like a thousand questions, but I'll try to narrow it down here. First of all, were you not aware that the dub was done this way on purpose? Beyond what stump mentioned in their post, there are some rumors going around that no one was really paid well either so they kind of just did whatever they wanted to. Second, what about adult themes bothers you? Are you saying you would stay away from anime like Another or Claymore just because they are violent, or does it have more to do with what's said? I mean you said you like some violent anime, but where's the threshold on that? There are a lot of anime out there with adult themes that are better for it, and honestly Ghost stories is ironically one of the best examples of that. Finally, for now at least, what other anime are you talking about with adult themes that were changed for the dub? Because I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'm interested to see what you are referring to. Also, short point, but no, there is no other dub, at least in English of Ghost Stories. The English version is by far and away the most well known version and a commonly known entity in anime. Weird as it might seem, if someone else did try to dub it, they'd probably catch a lot of hate for daring to mess with it.
  19. Is it just a retelling of the first series proper? I just saw a trailer for it about an hour ago, which I had been trying to avoid watching anything about it, but now that's out the window, and it was using direct scenes from the original show frame by frame at some points. I don't know if I like that, but I'm curious enough to ask.
  20. http://www.dualshockers.com/secret-mana-remake-announced-square-enix/ The game will come out on PS4 PSVita and PC February 15th. We don't know much else about it though, or if the first or third games in the trilogy will get the same treatment. This could however be the confirmation that we need to say that the Switch ports of the series are not coming to the West. Who can say for sure though. So, any thoughts on it?
  21. Made in Abyss I agree with. I do need to catch up a few episodes though.
  22. I've been playing the ever loving crap out of Yonder. I didn't think a game that I basically bought just to get a break of constant combat in games would end up being something I'd spend so much time with, but it turned out that way.
  23. There is a Bioshock collection on current gen consoles and PC. But yeah, you probably shouldn't have sold your 3DS. There's a lotta games on there that still make it worth having.
