  1. There are a few things that make High School anime popular, that I've mentioned before a long while back, but I'll reaffirm them here. For people who are already out of high school, whether they loved it or hated it, high school anime allows them to either relive their own best moments as they watch a show, or in the back of their minds, wish that their own experience with high school has been that memorable or exciting. For younger people who are still in high school, it's fun fantasize about maybe experiencing similar things during their own high school experience, be it because they are already in high school, or are heading there in the future. There's also a smaller group of people that just finished high school, who are naturally stuck, not sure of where they are going, or what's going to happen next, who are hanging on to some of their memories for comfort's sake, and high school anime helps them relive that, at least to an extent. In the back of our minds, we also know that, or are at least told that certain things are supposed to happen, like a first love or first kiss or first real dance etc. If that doesn't happen for us, we think of high school as disappointing, but anime loves to have those tropes in it, so we enjoy seeing those happen. On another note, we are also made to believe that despite it all, high school is meant to be the best four years of our lives, which may or may not be true for some people, but for anime characters, it usually is played out that way. They go through hardships, maybe even death, but by the end of it, they end in love or learn a life lesson that they will carry for he rest of their existence, and that's appealing because it's dramatic and intense and involved. High School anime works, not because it resonates with us, because of how it plays with our emotions, expectations, and hopes, and there will always be people who are okay with that.

  3. I've been re-watching Ruroni Kenshin for the last few days. Almost done with season two. It's an interesting show, there are almost too many characters so a lot of actors played several roles, like Steve Blum and Michael McConohie, although most people are only credited for their biggest roles. Despite that, it's still one of the best dubs to date.
  4. I started watching Ruroni Kenshin again just yesterday or the day before and I'm already on Episode 12. This show, like many others from that time has aged really well.
  5. Just gotta say, the title of your thread cracked me up. I'm actually crying over here hahaha. I've never seen anyone have that reaction when they see it and it's really funny to me for some reason. To be honest though, I hate school days, because it just got way too over the top.
  6. Not to be rude, but rather for the sake of being accurate, Miyazaki did the Screenplay, but it was directed by the late Yoshifumi Kondo who died three years later. It would be unfair not to give him his fair dues. The last movie I watched was Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it was a great film. Not perfect, but not bad like the people who are mad about being wrong are pointing out. It honestly bothers me that so many people are looking for excuses to try and justify not getting what they thought they were going to by whining about the smallest detail only to try and convince people that they were right. It's pathetic, and yet it's everywhere.
  7. I mean, we're talking about a guy who could have killed 10,000 people, and then forgot when he ran that risk. Not only is eccentric, and who knows what other kind of mental issues he had, but he still ended up killing thousands of people for no reason that he could come up with. There's nothing morally grey about that.
  8. I know I intended to reply to this thread last time I swung by here, now I'm not sure why I didn't. Anyways, on topic, all of my yes goes to Studio Ghibli films, and not just Miyazaki ones either. I have watched every single Studio Ghibli film more than three times, even darker ones like Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke. I am one of the biggest fans of their films ever, and how can you not be. There's something about the quality of Ghibli film that others cannot compare to, and while even Ghibli has one or two movies that are a little weird, they are still great to watch. I make it a point, and have ever since I could, to watch Howl's Moving Castle and From Up on Poppy Hill at least once a year as they are two of my favorite Ghibli films. I also really enjoy The Wind Rises, despite the obvious controversy that comes with focusing on a creator of plains that were used for war, simply because I love how I can look at one scene and think, "oh that one reminds of Kiki's Delivery Service" or "That reminds me of Ponyo" and on and on that can go. When I saw that film in theaters, I had a smile from ear to ear through most of it. And that's Ghibli films for me in general, I felt all the emotions of when Marnie was here, I enjoyed the simple lives of "My Neighbors the Yamada's, and I loved the retelling and amazing art style of one Japan's most classic tales as Isao Takahata's farewell film. There really isn't anything Ghibli has done that I don't find to be amazing in one way or another, even in cases like Pom Poko, which is more funny and over the top than anything else. Studio Ghibli is a prime example of how do animation right, and I hope for generations to come, people learn from them to try as best they can to match that quality.
  9. I mean I'd be okay with it. I've never had any reason to dislike RyePotatoes at all.
  10. This may seem like an odd place for something like this, but there's no denying Alita is more known as a manga than the two episode anime based off of the first volumes of the first Alita series,. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, here it is: My question is, for those who have read even some of Alita, what are your thoughts here? I mean, it's seems weird, because at first glance Ido is lacking the symbol of who who have lived on Tiphares, yet Cheiren (I hope I spelled that right, always been bad with her name) does have the symbol, which suggests already that the story is going to be changed, and in fact that she might be the main villain of the film, which might make sense as there are claims this is only going to go over the first 4 volumes of the manga, so no enemy/ally Desty Nova yet. The point is though, that even through this a very simple trailer, it also already seems to have some inconsistencies with the manga, and that could be a cause for concern, along with the fact of course that the manga is extremely violent and doesn't shy away from sexuality either. What do you think about it?
  11. I seriously have no idea where to stick this, so if it needs to be moved that's fine, but I really think it's time we addressed the constant ad threads that keep coming up. First off, I haven't clicked any of them, but for all we know, they are viruses or worse, and because our only mod right now is Optic who is clearly busy with real life, nothing is ever done about them. Even if some or all of them aren't viruses, I don't remember this forum existing to be an ad for people who desperately feel the need to plugged. i don't know what the best solution is, but these threads are annoying, and something needs to be done about them. If they are legit, they probably need their own forum to go to, if they aren't, they need to be deleted so that no one clicks on them unsuspecting and gets a virus. This problem started before we switched to this new forum layout and I caught a few of them and closed or deleted them, but now there's little I or anyone else can do and it needs to handled one way or another. Anyone have their own opinions on the matter?
  12. I mean, you can't do better than Noire
  13. It might be a long shot but have you tried looking for pictures online of anime women on checkered floors to see if you could find the image again? That would really helpful.
  14. Do you remember the color of the hair of the spikey haired character? Considering that's rarer hairstyle for females in anime, it will be easier to go off of if I have that information.
  15. That's a hard question to answer. I actually watched several anime before realizing that there was a difference, so for some anime, I don't even recognize them well as something different from other animation. That said, I think what really got me into it was probably Miyazaki and Takahata's Studio Ghibli films. I grew up with films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Whisper of the Heart and several others like it. Studio Ghibli films in general got me into anime, and kept me into it when I thought I was done. It's because of that though, that I get annoyed when people say Makoto Shinkai is the new Hayao Miyazaki. There is no new Hayao Miyazaki. I guy like that, only comes once after few hundred years. No one alive today will see another animator or director on that level, and it feels like Shinkai-san is only being given that credit because of this films popularity, and not because of their quality, and while he does have great films, Shinkai-san has a long way to go in order to get to the point where he deserves that comparison. Sorry, that became a rant aimed at no one in particular.
  16. I don't read a lot of Manga, so for me it's probably Full Metal Alchemist. I read that one when after I first finished the anime, then read each time a new came out, and then read the entire thing not a month after finishing it the first time.
  17. https://kotaku.com/1820533763 I'm, practically speechless
  18. Worn the heck out. I've been so busy with everything going down with EA the last few days, I've hardly been able to concentrate on anything else. Keeping up with all of it has not been easy, and it's not over yet.
  19. Not to be rude, but isn't this kind of pointless now. Pretty sure Optic is the only staff member at the moment. Everyone else got demodded without warning.
  20. I mostly watch Youtube for anime and gaming content, so YongYea and Akidearest both come to mind. ReviewTechUSA and Anime America as well.
  21. Ratchet and Clank, Horizon Zero Dawn, Dragonball Xenoverse 2, Tales of Berseria, NieR: Automata, Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Dragon Quest Heroes II, any of these are good to start a collection.
  22. I'm currently playing .hack//GU Last Recode. This series of games is just as good as I remember.
