Favorite Video Game Soundtrack?

Orius

Recommended Posts

I'm surprised there isn't one of these yet, considering all the awesome music video games have to offer. I know there are threads that posted music from visual novels in anime music threads, but I feel it's better to create a separate thread for both visual novels and video games, especially when many visual novels were never adapted into anime, so their definition as "anime music" is kinda... dubious.

For me, my favorite is obviously Farewell from Steins;Gate:

Ah, that never gets old. Someone bring me a bucket to cry in.

And of course, can't forget about Believe Me:

But the one I really wanted to post about today is Morphogenetic Sorrow from The Nonary Games series:

It was originally from 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors, but they used it to great effect as well in Virtue's Last Reward, during Luna's ending (the best ending thus far in a heap of mediocre writing).

I know so far I've only posted visual novel music, so here's one from my favorite video game:

I especially love the parts of the song where the choir is singing.

Last but not least, Leliana's Song from Dragon Age: Origins:

I would vote for some music from Final Fantasy, but for more specific i guess i would give my bet on Flower of Blooming in Slum by Nobuo Uematsu. Have seen many versions of it and it is always good. The OST is always remind of me Aerith and that is what making me sad when listening on it. BTW, the OST playing on new trailer of Mario Odyssey looks pretty great. I really love the beat.

Narrowing my favorite game OSTs down to just a few candidates is an extremely difficult task - I'm a huge fan of game music to the point that my game music folder contains just shy of 30,000 files, I go out of my way to attend game music concerts. I followed OCRemix all the way back to the site's original founding, along with VGMix through its various incarnations up to its eventual demise.

In short, I'm a video game music nerd. Completely and utterly. So... yeah, picking a few winners isn't an easy task - the temptation to have an infinitely long list featuring everything from Lunar, Crusader: No Remorse/Regret, Einhander, Touhou, etc is strong. But I will resist. If only because I can't be bothered to put sufficient work into this post to feature all of them.

So, with no further ado,

Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy games almost always have beautiful soundtracks, but for me, FFVI takes the cake.

Highlights: The opening theme, Awakening, Edgar & Sabin, Kefka, Troops March On, Metamorphosis --- actually, damn near the entire soundtrack.

I had the chance to hear the opera scene live, in concert, with professional opera singers, at one of the Distant Worlds concerts I've attended, which was an incredible experience. Who needs One Winged Angel when you can have that?

Even beyond the OST, FFVI has inspired a lot of my favorite video game arrangements - with many of my favorites appearing in OCRemix's Balance & Ruin album. Speaking of the opera scene, it in particular received an exceptionally masterful tribute:

Link to the Past

Picking a single Zelda game is difficult - Ballad of the Wind fish from Link's Awakening is probably one of my favorite tracks from the series, but while I love the game's sound track, it isn't quite as strong as Link to the Past's, which for me set the standard for Zelda games.

Highlights: The opening theme, Hyrule Castle theme, Dark World and Skull Forest themes, boss theme, everything involving Ganon, and the ending theme.

Honorable mention: The Hyrule Castle theme from Breath of the wild - I got goosebumps the first time I heard this. Combining aspects of multiple songs from multiple games - Ballad of the Wind Fish, Ganon's theme, and the old Hyrule castle themes, I cannot think of anything that would have made Breath of the Wild's final task any more epic than this.

Silent Hill 2 & 3

Even separately, I think I've listened to the Silent Hill 2 and 3 sound tracks more than any other game OST - they're both chock-full of extremely listenable tracks that I've never grown tired of, with Silent Hill 3 kickstarting the series' trend of adding in haunting, beautifully done vocal tracks.

Descent II

Descent II, released in 1996, was one of the first full PC games I ever purchased - my family didn't really have much in the way of money, so I was basically entirely reliant on shareware games and demos for a long time, along with the occasional game borrowed from my father's coworkers.

Descent II was my first introduction to red book audio in games - rather than using MIDI, or some similar format, the game's music was stored on the disc as actual CD audio tracks, and streamed in game. This allowed for sound quality that was superior to anything else I'd heard by leaps and bounds, and meant that you could listen to the game's music by just playing the CD back in any regular old CD player.

The soundtrack itself was my first real introduction to electronic music, and remained one of my most played CDs for a very long time as I grew up.

I absolutely have to go with anything from the .hack GU games. Everything they have are in their own way beautiful, sad, both or so well fitting into what's going on that even when it's funny you can't help but be completely elated the whole time.

Here's a few tracks to make my point.

The default desktop theme:

You Smiled Kindly:

Gentle Hands:

Lost Resolution:

Hulle Granz Cathedral:

There's a ton of really good tracks, but those are some of the best.

I love the sound of the Sega Mega Drive. My favourite soundtracks, therefore, are from Sega games.

My absolute favourite, for the sake of nostalgia and not necessarily the best, is Sonic the Hedgehog 2's soundtrack.

Pretty much the soundtrack of my childhood. I've heard it hundreds of times and it's still some of the best VGM there is, imo.

Second, and which I consider to be the single best VG soundtrack ever produced, is the Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time soundtrack. inspired by the music of Pink Floyd, more specifically the album Wish You Were Here, the soundtrack to Ecco is... mind blowing. I quite enjoy listening to it, on it's own, in order, with no gameplay. This is not typical for me, but it is so good that it's practically a musical album anyway. It's soundtrack fits perfect with the gameplay and plot, which is straight out of a psychedelic trip. Completely crazily brilliant soundtrack.

Third is the soundtrack to Kid Chameleon. Not a whole lot to say about this one, other than that it is very good :D

Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack is definitely my absolute favorite. Listening to it gives me chills. I also really like the Witcher 3 soundtrack. I agree with RepentantSky that the .hack series has some amazing tracks - but I would argue that the original quartet has the better soundtrack than //G.U. Both sets of the series are very good though.

Of course the Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Final Fantasy all have amazing music too.

Oh, and let's not forget good ole Donkey Kong!

Hm, I like quite a few. Some of my favorite soundtracks are...

Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Chorno Cross

Final Fantasy IV, VI, IX, X

Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess

I just recently bought the soundtrack to Breath of the Wild (even though I can't play it). I haven't listened to it yet, though. I hear it's really nice, though.

It is beautiful. You will love it, I'm sure. Especially after looking at the other soundtracks you like.
Wish my computer could still play disks. I have to use my DVD player. lol
I'm glad you share my love of Sonic 2's soundtrack. (y)
Thinking about it, that may just be the nostalgia talking. It was my favorite of the the main Sonic Genesis games (Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles).

Hmm, that's hard to say. I've listened to a lot music and my favourites change, often simply due to my mood at the time. Currently, I'm spending a lot of time listening to music from the Persona 5 and Nier/Nier:Automata soundtracks. I'm fond of the soundtracks for the Danganronpa series and can second the Silent Hill 2 and 3 soundtracks. The C&C: Red Alert theme is something I've always liked.

I'll say more at a later point, but here are a few pieces.

The Breath of the Wild soundtrack is absolutely lovely in my opinion. The Hyrule Castle theme is just completely and utterly incredible. <3

... though I suppose I already touched on that in my post. :?

Favourite video game soundtrack... The options, OH THE OPTIONS.... For me–barring the classics, of course–it's between Journey, The Last Guardian, and Ori and the Blind Forest. All three of those invoke emotions that, at times, you'd think aren't even possible.
