  1. What do you get when you cross a centipede with a parrot? A walkie-talkie. Why was the rabbit upset? He was having a bad hare day. What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear.
  2. So chatgpt is scoring better than the average college student on college SATs.  Why does this not surprise me?

    Better up your game humans!

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Thinking back to my days at work it doesn't surprise me that an AI can write more intelligible messages. Some the e-mails we received often took my colleague and I several minutes to decipher and work out just what it was our customer wanted.

  3. I try to keep it to what I immediately need, plus a bit more for room for growth. I also try to stick to modular parts and industry standards: PCI is great. Intel's CPU socket-of-the-month is.. not so great. A path to the future is better than having the best of what's available today. That way there's less chance of finding myself in a dead-end and when I finally reach the point where I actually need the performance of today's latest-and-greatest bit of kit I can pay a cheaper price for it and just slot it in to my existing rig. I have to admit that I do occasionally get on pcpartpicker and play the "what if I won the lottery" thing however.
  4. I don't get much into the shipping thing but I kind of liked the dynamic between Touma and Misaka during the index/railgun episodes. I'd like to see a series with both of them together.. after they both have left school and matured a bit.
  5. Went and got a jacket from the store at work. (After a few windy, rainy days of sub 40-degree weather I figured I needed something besides my tattered old sweatshirt hoodie. It's comfy but a sponge in wet weather and doesn't do much against the wind either.) Also a new hoodie and a couple t-shirts. They're finally getting Psyche merch in!
  6. Depending on price I might be interested in one of the just-announced Ryzen 9 7900 CPUs. 12 core / 24 thread CPU at only 65 Watts is an interesting product to me. My old 8/16 core 2700X specs at 105W so that would be getting a lot more processing power for 40% less electrical power. My new GFX card took 20W more than my old one so it would be nice getting some of that back, and then some. Alternatively I could take advantage of water cooling (I have an AIO on my 2700X kit) to overclock it a bit at the same power level. Again, depending on price. The new CPU is of course Zen 4 so I would need a new AM5 motherboard and new DDR5 RAM as part of the deal. I'm planning on doing that eventually anyway so I wouldn't mind in the greater scheme of things but that's still a big up-front expense to get over.
  7. How's THAT for a slice of fried gold?
  8. So I found a small village with some beachfront property with nice views and built myself a small new outpost/base. Just kind of messing around because I don't have time to get into big builds but with the new village mechanics I find it kind of fun to quickly clean up and fortify a town and get a simple economy going. Hidden below are Sun- and Moon-rise pics looking out the window from the newly completed upper level (still using Sildur's shaders and "Steven's Traditional" 64x textures)...
  9. I found it a bit confusing for the first episode or two. They kind of tried for the "hook you on a mystery" thing and it didn't quite work for me. That said it got much better. It passed the 3-episode test and was definitely worth watching overall. I enjoyed the rest of the series once I understood what was going on.
  10. I was just reading up on the covid situation in China. So here's a Amabie/Yugioh crossover. (via https://www.zerochan.net/3244562 )
  11. To me they're kind of like endermen. You don't want to get caught in the open by them but if you can hide under a tree or quick dig into a hillside then you're relatively safe. Nice xp return too. The phantom hitbox is only half a block high however so they are more annoying to try and get a hit on.
  12. Phantoms seemed to like me today in Minecraft. At one point I had 6 spawning at once! Serves me right for trying to build stuff through the night instead of sleeping. On the plus side I got a lot of phantom membranes once I pulled out my looting / smite sword.
  13. Scott Manley posted a new cooking how-to on youtube that showed a .. different way to cook a turkey. I guess he had some free time over the holidays. Maybe too much free time. (For what it's worth I'm more of a fan of the deep-fried method of turkey cooking.)
  14. I liked it too, though I'm sure some people would find it diabetes-inducing.
  15. Apparently parrots cannot be bred, but they do dance if you put a record in the jukebox. They also have a disturbing tendency to occasionally make random monster noises. When the first one did it it made that baby-zombie noise. I was unarmed and unarmored at my crafting table inside my base and it took me a while to figure out where it was coming from. Almost had an ex-parrot moment once I realized.
  16. Found a few parrots in minecraft. Haven't ever really played with them. Anything especially interesting/fun about them?
  17. It is actually nice here in SoCal where I am. Sunny and cool but not cold. My brother in Wisconsin says they're also reporting improving conditions over the weekend where he lives. By Monday they might even get up to 0F.. 15 if you ignore the wind chill factor! ()
  18. First inflation wrecks my savings, then the stock market tanks my 401k, now this.  2022 has not been a good year for my retirement plans.  🤣

No association of Viagra and Cialis with reduced Alzheimer’s disease risk.

  19. Oh no!  Another casualty of 2022!
Somehow I missed the announcement of Greg Bear’s passing.  (Probably sick and/or sleep deprived.)  Bear was one of my favorite authors.  If you haven’t read “Blood Music” then do so.   Even Better than Clarke’s “Childhood’s End”.  Bear was right up there with Niven in my estimation.
