  1. Happy New Year!  Hope it's a better one...

      Happy New Yeaaaar!! 🎉

  2. Maybe not of all time for me but I did enjoy it as well. Enough that I went and bought the discs. That's something of a rarity for me. I stream a lot but not much gives me that "I gotta own that" kind of feeling.
  3. My taste in music is pretty eclectic but I have been known to do metal on occasion. I'm kind of a sucker for themed albums like Blind Guardians NIME (if you don't feel the desire to [re]read The Silmarillion after The Curse of Feanor or Thorn then you're beyond help) or Ayeon's whole Universal Migrator epic is another bit of awesome. Another fun one is Lucassen's Star One... match the tune to the pop sci-fi movie. TURISAS's Stand Up and Fight is better than hard liquor for medicinal applications. Another band that I've apparently been keeping on rotation recently according to my Spotify is Threshold .. eg. Slipstream. Ashes is also good.
  4. Something to do with chicken-riding baby zombies? Or were you referring to the cyborg chicken hackaday project from a few years ago? (Not a fan of ATHF. Sorry, not sorry.)
  5. I could have fun - and maybe even be productive - with something like this. It is basically a VR headset that replaces your computer + monitor setup. Kind of laptop with a VR headset, but without the laptop. Software-wise it is a linux window-manager. Looks like they're developing their own hardware, but also runs on SteamVR headsets equipped with Linux drivers like the HTC Vive, Vive Pro, or Index. I found more technical details in this article at reposhub.
  6. I don't know why but every year the change on the chest gfx gives me a moment of "oh crap, someone griefed my stuff". Merry (minecraft) Christmas!
  7. Finally starting my vacation!  Theoretically anyway.  Gotta work at 12:10-9AM (pacific time) Christmas day for JWST, then sometime over the weekend move furniture so I can move Mom out of her nursing home and into an assisted-living arrangement next week.  Hopefully the new year will be.. less eventful.

I’ve been hearing some pretty wild things about the weather In Cali recently. Any of that affecting you? Where I am they’re now predicting Christmas will be in the low 60s despite yesterdays high being 34F 😂

      @Ohayotaku

So far I’m good here.  A bit of rain started in the wee hours this morning but that’s fine.  We need the water.  We’re supposed to get a series of fronts coming through but not much intensity.  Other than idiots on the freeways not paying attention to the laws of physics it seems like we’ll just have to deal with several days of rainy weather down here in SoCal.  Up north there might be issues.  They’re talking up to 10 feet of snow in the Sierras.  Again, we need the water, but these days the snow doesn’t stick around and people are worried about it melting and causing flooding once the storm is over.

Actually, my brother in Wisconsin seems to be having more “fun” with the weather.  He’s reporting that there’s a 100-car pileup on the interstate due to ice and snow.

Sound similar to where I live being fortunate enough to miss out on the tornados that hit Kentucky & other areas to the south recently. So far the wildly varying temps have just resulted in rain & a couple days of wind gusts in my neck of the woods.

  8. I actually got into it a bit after a few episodes and made a game out of trying to spot the differences. But 8 episodes was too much. By that point I was SO done with it. That said, the rest of the Haruhi saga is still a favorite.
  9. This new caves and cliffs has some pretty amazing terrain generation. This is that cave that I mentioned previously. It is right under a base that I've been using as my main abode since probably about 1.7. As I mentioned, the new caves-and-cliffs 2 converts all the bedrock in these old chunks to "deep slate", and if you dig through that then you'll find another ~60 blocks of depth before you'll again hit bedrock. This cave was in that "sub-level" under my old chunk's bedrock. Those things on the right that look like stalagmites are what the new version calls dripstone, and can be mined, then used to create an endless lava generator. btw, I don't normally play with the gamma turned up this high. On my monitor this is pretty much pitch black. I just did this to the screenshot to bring out the details for this post. My test rig to experiment with the dripstone.
  10. Of the ones I've seen, Tomoya and Nagisa from Clannad would probably be first. Then maybe Shana and Yuji from Shakugan no Shana. Irie and Kokoro from Itazura no Kiss or Kaoru and Aoi from Ai Yori Aoshi are others that come to mind. For pure cuteness it'd be tough to do better than Takeo and Yamato from Ore Monogatari.
  11. Minecraft day.. (Re)installing optifine, now that 1.18.1 is out, and experimenting with dripstone. findings: 1.18.1_HD_U_H4_pre1 seems to work fine to get shaders working again. (see below. As long as it lets me play with shaders on my brother's Realms server I'm happy so that's all I really checked.) With dripstone there must be a source block of water above the top dripstone block, then the dripstone block, then a pointed dripstone/stalactite. Anything else and you'll get particle effects but nothing else. Once you have that then it looks like any solid block below will eventually sprout a stalagmite. A cauldron that catches the drips from the pointed above will also be filled. (This also works with lava BTW, so now there's a way to farm lava.) The pointed can be broken with a pick, which drops itself. The pointed dripstone grows both up from the bottom and down from the top. The longer you let it grow the thicker and longer it gets. (That's what SHE said! nm..) Larger pieces can be broken for multiple drops, so you can start with one pointed and eventually grow a whole stack. 4 pointed can also be crafted into one dripstone block. There does not seem to be a way to craft pointed dripstone.
  12. That “Part 2” of 1.18 added a huge sub-level to all chunks. Existing bedrock is changed to deep slate, and if you dig through that there are another 60 or so blocks of deep slate below that before you’ll reach the new bedrock layer! The new levels are generated with the new algorithms too. I found a huge cavern with dripstone and stalactites and stalagmites at the bottom of my mine underneath my main base in an otherwise 1.14 chunk. I even found some copper down there. Nice change from having to travel huge distances to find unexplored chunks and newly-added resources on an update. The upper levels now extend to 250 blocks as well, and iron and emeralds generate at increasing frequency at the higher elevations.
  13. I took the offer so next week it’s goodbye Peraton and real-time operations, hello JPL/Caltech and integration/test.

Thanks.  Going to have to hit the ground running with the test schedule but it should be a good thing long term.

  14. That's one of the few series that I liked enough to actually own on DVD. But yes. Totally agree.
  15. Minecraft anyone? Logged in to my brother's minecraft realm to check out 1.18 after (re)installing the latest optifine and my favorite shader on the client side. Didn't have much time so no exploration, but I used up all my string building scaffolds and reached Y > 200, where I was able to capture this drones-eye view of a village I've been working on. (below) I think they're going to have to up the max render distance in online games. At this height people are going to want to see vast vistas laid out before them when they're standing at the top of a mountain at Y = 250. 16 chunks just isn't going to cut it anymore, visually speaking. That's barely to the foothills of a well-proportioned mountain if the mountain is that high.
  16. I'm the same way. Even for the ones I've really liked, I get maybe 3 seasons in before it gets repetitive and boring. It is extremely rare and takes a lot of skill to continue to create anything for that long and keep it fresh. Besides I want a story, and endings are an important part of any story. If I see something with hundreds of episodes I don't even start it.
  17. I have never and probably will never. It is one thing to have a bit of “hentai”* in the plot - if it actually enhances the story - but a whole game or anime with that as its reason for existence? What’s the point? Not judging, I just never saw the attraction personally. * not to be pedantic or put words in your mouth but a lot of people say “hentai” when they really mean “ecchi”. There is a difference.
  18. coinky-dink... I just yesterday put Golden Kamuy on my to-binge list.
  19. There are lots, but the first few that come to mind are mostly Ghibli. Some classics like Totoro or Spirited Away. Kiki's and Castle in the Sky and Whisper of the Heart are a few others that I've watched several times over the years. Getting away from the "G" and in a more "nostalgic" vein there's stuff like Wizards that takes me back to my middle/high school days.
  20. Haven’t tried it but maybe just use the normal editing tools to post 3 sets of 3 pics with line breaks between each set? Then edit the properties of each pic to make them all the same size and make the first pic in each set left-justified, the second centered, and the third right. I’d try it but last time I checked you can’t delete posts and I don’t want to make a mess I can’t clean up.
