My favorite remake is probably Fruits Basket. The original didn’t make much of an impression on me, but the remake haf me emotionally invested through out it’s 3 year run. While this is probably due at least in part to life changes for me, I’m sure being a more complete adaption also had a lot to do with it. Some other remakes I enjoyed include Rurouni Kenshin, Spriggan, Ushio & Tora and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
I have mixed feelings about Trigun: Stampede. I primarily didn’t like the changes made to Meryl’s character & Milly’s omission. Though it’s indicated she will appear in the follow-up, so guess I’ll wait to make a final verdict.
Also mixed feelings on the Star Bkazers/Space Battleship Yamato remakes. The visual & animation quality upgrade is definitely welcome as well the toning down of some of the more kitschy elements. However in some ways the storyline is harder to follow & they even eliminated some elements i liked in the original. Also, while the number & role of female characters increased, it also felt like greater emphasis was put on fanservice.
Didn’t care for the recent Ranma 1/2 remake. While the original had way too much filler content, the newer version didn’t have the same frenetic energy, for me anyway. Also preferred the older version of Kino’s Journey.
I’m apprehensive of the upcoming Magic Knight Rayearth remake as I didn’t enjoy the alternative OVA version & CLAMP’s recent attempts to revive their classic series don’t have a good track record for me.
As far as a remake I want to see, Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm) definitely needs a more comprehensive anime adaption of the manga.
