Which do you prefer? I prefer subbed i like the original voice actors voices etc and find watching dub very disappointing.

I watched an episode of Attack On Titan and Black Lagoon and they sounded awful when dubbed

I have a preference for Japanese VAs who generally seem to put more energy/emotion into their roles. One exception is that I prefer Cowboy Bebop’s english dub.

When I started watching anime just about everything was dub, then I discovered fansubs and decided that I preferred to hear the original VA's who seemed to put more expression into the voices. The arrival of DVDs was great because they had both sub and dub, in the days of VHS tapes shops would usually only stock the dub and if they did have the sub it was usually more expensive.

These days I only watch subs.

I watch mostly subs these days but I watch a lot of dub too. I guess for me I really don't have a preference either way since I like both for different reasons. Subs because I like the original voice actors and dubs for when I don't feel like reading what I'm watching.

I know it's the unpopular opinion to watching anime but I prefer dubbed because I used to watch it a lot when learning English and it helped me hearing it all the time. I also don't like to read subtitles and I seem like I miss watching the show when reading subtitle.

Same as this ~ I don't like to read while I watch TV. I don't have the best eyesight to begin with and trying to read all the things means all I'm doing is focusing on reading it and not really what is even going on in the show lol

I have always watched subbed anime because I have to have subtitles on to watch anything anyway so why not : > The subbed seem to be better compared to dubbed too.

To each their own, some interesting replies. I just feel the same as most do and that's the OG voice actors seem real and more emotion from them, i love foreign language films too, so subs really aren't a big deal.

The original VAs know their own culture's art. Manga is drawn to be overly expressive at times and the Japanese know how to match what the mangaka is going for. It sounds way more organic and appropriate to the anime. There are, however, a couple of exceptions to this for me. One being Bleach, simply because I started watching it on Adult Swim as a teenager. Got accustomed to the English VAs and to me Johnny Yong Bosch is Ichigo. The same thing happened with FMAB, however, I genuinely think that its dub is spectacular without the need for any sentimental value.

Vision issues is a big reason why having dub as an option is a great thing. I hate Attack on Titan dub, but if it came down to either watching it or never getting to watch that story unfold I'd happily watch the dub.

I prefer dub, because in my opinion it's more exciting and better than sub which i don't really like anymore. I used to watch anime in sub many years ago, but nowadays i like dub more and i personally think the english voice actors do a great job. I still accept people who prefer sub though, but unfortunately there are still many toxic sub watchers in the anime community who can't accept dub watchers and bully them because of it. Liking sub is fine, but what i hate is when sub watchers think their opinion is a fact which is not because everyone has different tastes and you can't speak for all people. I as a example, think that japanese voice actors aren't really that great in voicing the characters just because it's the original language. But that's just my personal opinion, and at least i still accept people with a different opinion about this topic and don't try to state my opinion as a fact like many sub watchers sadly do. I also have to be honest, and say that i don't really like the japanese language anymore because in my opinion it's a boring sounding language but that's just how i think about it.

This is a truly stupid fact of the anime community. I do not understand the hate and it's entirely unnecessary. Take @Zeref for example, he used dub to learn English the same way we do sub to help learn Japanese.

I think I may be missing something here. Why is it a negative that it's their native language?

I never said that it is a negative that it's their native language. What i meant with this was, that many toxic sub watchers are extremely arrogant and always praise anime in the original language like it's always  perfect and dub just sucks. And also how extremely arrogant they are to dub watchers, and tell them that only anime in japanese is great but don't realize that they just think like this and that their opinion is not a fact. Liking anime in the original language is fine, but they should leave people alone who want to watch anime in dub because they like it more that way. That's why i wrote it like this, to give an example why toxic sub watchers like those aren't right about it that sub is always better than dub. Because like i already said everyone has different tastes. That's why i think japanese voice actors aren't that great in my opinion, not because it is a negative that it's their native language but rather because i don't think they do a great job in voicing the characters right. If other people think different about this topic, and like sub and the japanese voice actors then that's great and i accept that. But it's just sad that many sub watchers can't do the same, and just accept it that there are many people like me who enjoy dub more and think that english voice actors are great in voicing the characters right.

I should have been more clear probably about what I wanted you to clarify. I'm curious as to why you don't think the Japanese VAs are good at voicing the characters.

My preference is, in order:

1) A well done dub

2) A well done sub

3) A badly done dub

4) A badly done sub

If the VA's doing the dub can put on a good performance then I can just watch and enjoy. I'd rather read the dialogue if the alternative is putting up with poor voice acting or voices that don't match the character. A good example would be the Negima!? anime. I ended up watching the sub because they made Negi sound like a snooty young Englishman, despite him having grown up in Wales. They also made Evangeline sound like a English noblewoman even though she grew up in eastern Europe.

Subbed all the way, original voices just hit different. Dubs can feel off, like someone’s trying too hard to match the vibe. Plus, you get to pick up random Japanese phrases. Win-win.

I forgot to mention in my other post, that i also prefer anime in dub because i don't like to read subtitles anymore. I used to do that many years ago, but nowadays i can't watch an anime and read the subtitles anymore because that would be too annoying and too stressful for me. I still wonder how i was able to do this back then 😂 I have the feeling that if i would now watch anime in sub, then i would probably miss a lot and i also wouldn't be able to read that fast anymore like i used to. So that's another reason why i like dub more.

I get it! Subbed anime can definitely capture the original vibe with the voice actors' emotions. Dubs can sometimes feel off, but it all comes down to personal preference. Enjoy watching!
