What is your "will not watch" list?

Cy~

Recommended Posts

Imagine this scenario. You've finally found an anime that you think is perfect. You're watching the first episode and you see something... Whatever it is, that's it, you're done with this episode and you might be done with the whole series. You bail, running away at top speed.

What did you see? Are there any noteworthy anime that have already struck out for you?

For myself, here's what makes me run screaming -

  • Excessive fan service (ecchi) - I usually don't have the patience for this stuff. It doesn't do shit for me and I find that it can distract from a good story.
  • Ugly graphics - I'm shallow. If it isn't pretty, then I'm out.
  • Blatant 3D - If I can obviously tell that it's tacky 3D models, then I'm done. At least try to make it believable.
  • Sterotypical macho guys - They get on my nerves. I rarely make it through an anime that has more than just one or two of this trope.
  • Pointless cruelty - Out of character cruelty just for shock value? Seems like the writers are reaching too hard.
  • Stupid characters - It isn't hard to write smart characters. If a character is supposed to be a noble leader but ends up betraying everyone because... Reasons... Then, I'm done. No time for stupid characters with unexplained MYSTERIOUS motivations. It's really just bad writing.

Zoop and I typically give anime three strikes, and any instance of the above counts as two. Other annoyances can add to that, and when they strike out, we take them off the list. I'm not even going to bother listing the anime that have "struck out". There are far too many.

What about you? What are the things that make you run from an anime?

Excessive fan service (ecchi) - I usually don't have the patience for this stuff. It doesn't do s*** for me and I find that it can distract from a good story.

this is definitely the biggest no no for me. if its light and not brought to my attention every 5 seconds i can deal with it, but overall it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes the overall anime much less enjoyable for me, no matter how good the story is. im fine with mature themes regarding sexuality, but constantly putting it in for 'shock factor' (which honestly, its way too normalized now for it to work that way), or to even put it first over the story is one of the worst things an anime can do imo.

another thing i really dislike is when they try to cram unnecessary romance into the mix. romance is fine, but having it come out of nowhere with no reasoning or development feels so forced and ultimately makes me not like the pairing. i wont usually stop the anime for this, but it definitely makes them less memorable for me. i want the relationships between the characters to mean something.

similar to this, i dont like harems, theyre just silly to me and the fact that there's several women lusting after whats usually a very dull and unexciting protagonist, makes no sense.

It's tough for me to say. I guess if I just don't "feel" it in the first couple episodes. I might say that things like excessive body parts that make me question who the character can even properly function is one of the big ones - so most ecchi is on that list. Of course that said once in a while if that's kinda the joke for a comedic anime it's alright. Again, I guess it just depends on how it's presented or how I feel.

Terrible stories or characters are killer though. I don't care how pretty an anime is, if the story is too predictable or boring or confusing I just can't watch it (unless it's an artsy film, I'll make exceptions for those). And if the characters are overly stereotypical and don't have a quality I can appreciate then it's hard for me to watch anime if one or more of those characters are a main character.

I put anything that just cannot catch my interest quickly enough, or if they are just another Asterisk War, in which the trope that I noted I was tired of comes into play.

Other than that, and porn categories, I am fairly open to try things, but a lot of what is mentioned in the OP does annoy me too.

I will not watch anything cringey, such as Watamote. (Not saying it's a bad anime, just that I personally can't watch it). Also if I can't get invested in an anime, or if I just can't care about the characters then it's on my "will not watch list".

Fan-service. Unless I'm specifically looking for an anime with fan-service, it's a huge turn-off for me. I can't stand overly fan servicey anime.

Harems. Just no.

Overly sappy bullshit. I generally stay away from romance anime altogether because of it.

Voices. There are certain types of voices that actually instill rage in me (it's actually not just voices, there are a few certain sounds that cause me distress, but they aren't worth mentioning in this topic). The worst is women that deliberately talk in a highpitched cutesy girly voice. I actually almost punched a coworker once because she did exactly that, fortunately she realized just how mad I was and didn't speak like that for the remainder of our days working together. So yeah, you can imagine that I would never willingly watch an anime with female characters like that....

(Another example of a voice that I hate, that isn't female, is Naruto. I absolutely will never ever watch that godforsaken show simply because of his voice. I won't even slightly consider it, that's how much I hate his voice. It could be the greatest show to ever grace our universe, and I still wouldn't watch it)

Slapstick. I really don't like slapstick comedy. Especially if it's in the form of a supposedly clumsy character purely for the sake of comedy or awkward situations. Why hello there, female protagonist hopelessly in love with the class stud muffin, I'm looking right at you. (As you can imagine, I despise slapstick even more if it involves any sort of romancey sappy shit)

Uhhhhh

There were other things I was going to list. But I've gotten so focused on voices and slapstick that it's pissed me off enough to make me forget what else sends something to my won't watch list.

Three episode rule. If I didn't like the first three, I'm dropping it, no questions asked. lel.

Except for mecha anime, I will never watch it once I see that Mecha tag.

I'd rather watch an anime filled with millions of lolis than mecha tbh.

This is going to upset a whole lot of people, I feel like, but, in general, if it's too slice of lifey?

Don't get me wrong, there's been some series that I have enjoyed that are considered slice. And that's fine, if I can find one that moves me enough, and from time to time, I also enjoy a good film that is slice. But, with series, I get bored. I'm an action and suspense junkey. I would not say that I don't give it a fair chance, but it has to be a good enough story line to keep me hooked or I just go "meh done."

When I choose a character that I love 0.00001 seconds in and then they kill off that character within the first season, first 5-6 episodes or right away. I'm just like... "YOU DESTROYED MY TRUST I QUIT."

When things get a little too creepy for my liking. I feel like I don't have to elaborate too much on this. But..uh.. yeah.

When I'm being literal trash of a certain pairing and then I read a spoiler that they don't end up together.. I'm trash. So. Unless the story is enough to keep me hooked, byebye. I HAVE A SOFT SIDE I NEED STROKED WITH THE LOVE OF MY FAVORITE SHIP.

Bad graphics or character design. I'm terrible. I find beauty in most art. But, there's some I'm just like "ehhh.. can't."

If one of my friends is watching a dub and it's TERRIBLE DUBBING. I CAN'T. Sub > Dub

Does any of this make sense? What do? Words? I dunno.

Hahaha, if anyone takes issue with this then they can fight me first. I think that slice of life is overrated and there are far, far too many slice of life anime out there.

I usually need something a little extra in my anime. Like, if it's slice of life, then I'd want it to include fantasy, suspense, or mystery elements as well. Though, I guess then the question is... Is it still slice of life?

Does any of this make sense? What do? Words? I dunno.

It all made perfect sense. 100%!

I don't watch mecha anymore. Fanservice is fine as long as the characters aren't lolis or women with watermelon boobs. I also avoid any long series if I can, since I hate fillers. No cutesy anime either.

°No super fan service

°nothing that bashes my beliefs (exception, if its in a properly done story or if its really bad at it)

°no nudity (unless it can be easily skipped/cut out or is just a butt/titains)

°over used cgi (like it hurts my eyes, unless the story is drop dead beautiful then NOPE)

I think thats it

I go on a strike system as well. Mine are one strike per offense though, although that can change if the offense is egregious enough.

Those strikes are lazy animation, harem's, ecchi, characters who are unbelievable in some way or another (whether extremely stupid or a Mary Sue) and a lack of any individuality. I've seen hundreds of anime over the years, I don't need the same plot lines thrown at me time after time.

What about ping pong the animation?

I mean, I can't speak for Cy, but for me personally, I stopped watching it completely because I hated the animation. It kind of ticked the box of lazy animation for me three times in a matter of minutes.

I like all breeds of anime as long as they're somewhat serious. But I will avoid comedy, because that genre tends to be completely idiotic. Nor do I want to watch a series that's heavy in fan service and I will avoid ones that are over 70 episodes long.

Any type of anime that has a plot where the main character will remain weak and make stupid decisions throughout the story (Besides School Days lul) isn't very great to me. I just like the idea that eventually the main character will get a 1up eventually throughout the story. Be it "rage moments", "one time energy bursts", whatever shows they couldn't take it anymore or that they're willing to be stronger floats my boat.

I hate fan service unless its ACTUAL good fan service. And most fan service to me isn't so uh rip.

Now mainly of all. Burn all the anime that had a rushed artstyle, I can't take it. If they didn't have the time to make the art and action look decent enough then don't release it yet? I understand some anime/short anime are just for fun and they do that on purpose but some action anime truly lack the sort of rush I desire. So when I watched the first episode of Re:creators we all know everyone lost their sht when the main antagonist used a gun and a sword in a violin position.. NOW THAT is unique and worth watching.

I quit anime when it's attack on titan.

I hate that show. Other than that

: It hasn't defined a storyline in the first three episodes

: It's painfully slow

: Has one particular voice actor I can't stand

: Isn't made by A1, Troyca, Or Kadokawa (I'm obviously joking here, many other great anime studios)

: Has overtly heterosexual themes, I mean I'm gay. And I get most everything is heterosexual, but when your kissing and boobs are flying every 2 seconds it lacks interest value for me

: Has Magical Girl Characters. Will. Not. Watch

: Is recommended by anyone who likes Fairytale Or Naruto

That last one is noticeably aggressive. Are you implying that people who like those two anime are incapable of liking what you deem to be good? That's pretty unfair.

I'm implying. Based on experience. That people who tend to like Naruto Or Fairytale typically do not like the same things and/or anime that i do. And that most recommendations by them i dislike. That's all

Slice-of-life + comedy. The worst combo possible. Sleeping aid every single time, and the Japanese humor really isn't all that funny. Even worse when the show has episodic structure, oh lord, the pain! I have yet so see the appeal of cute girls doing cute things, I guess.

Another thing I hate, and something that seems to be increasing nowadays, is those shows that deem themselves as "psychological", but all they do is showing us insane characters making bizarre grimaces while laughing like madmen.

And last but not least, I HATE those goody two-shoes, moral preaching protagonists with brown hair. They are the spawn of hell, and seemingly every LN-adaption has at least one of them. Make it stop, please!

That's, pretty sad, because I happen to like both of them, although not as much as several other anime and I think you and I, at least from posts I've seen, enjoy several of the time types of anime. That generalization is pretty harsh.

Well in my defence I only have one friend IRL and most of the anime he suggest I don't like. Personally i don't mind Naruto, but most of the time people who do like it mention anime to me and I we aren't looking for the same things from a show. Therefore based off of my experiences it's not such a harsh judgement. Sure it's a generalisation, but you can typically tell what anime a person likes and themes by what they watch and suggets. So that's why. I'm not some monster. Guess i worded it badly.
