I am personally fond of Cyborg 009...and it is really old school. I have two DVD discs...that might have been all that they made of the series. It was extremely controversial back in the day though I loved it to death. Still do. The new movie was good and a bit weird but I crossed my fingers that it would hopefully bring a reboot or at least re-release to the series. The new series (which I watched on Netflix) really needed better writing...much better writing...and the art style was just terrible and cheap. v_v I fear my dream of that series continuing on today will never happen.

I wouldn't be able to say unless I broke it down by genre...and even then I'd have trouble choosing. So many good anime

Ooh, Madoka got me back into watching Magical Girl animes actually (I had fallen off for years...). I really think that the Selector series is a good follow up for a Madoka fan. It is very different...card based...in a Yu-Gi-Oh! kind of way, but has the same kind of twist and darkness hiding in the background. It really pulled me in. If you are interested, give it a try sometime. But truly, not all Magical Girl series can be judged on the same playing field. Some are dark and some are not.

I suggest watching the trailers provided on your favorite anime discs. Usually they are on the last disc with the fewest episodes. Sometimes it will show similar anime (sometimes I think they pick some of them to try to sell them due to lack of interest, hence several of my own showing your panzer anime). If you are streaming, oftentimes you can view the trailer prior to watching it (like a preview). I watch a lot of trailers. It helps weed out a lot of questionable anime and has gotten me to look into some unknown ones as well.

How about a list of what you've already seen so we can make productive suggestions?

I hate to say it...but what were you expecting? From the trailers you could tell it was going to be taking some extreme suspension of disbelief to really enjoy. There are a few other shows with similar themes that I constantly question (like that girl academy battleship anime...from the trailers I know I'd be having the same problems you are having now).. I think for the creator it was more a tanks are cool and girls are cute...make an anime with both to sell move...

May I ask why you are trying to get into anime and why you chose Naruto to start with? I'll be honest, I have never heard of anyone who didn't fall in love with anime on happenstance.

Nothing really specific right now. Just putting the feelers out. I've got the PS VR headset which is pretty good (I know if I went PC I could do better but I wasn't looking into putting too much money into it at first) and only a few games at the moment. Still, when I play games on them now, I'm basically just flipping coins as to whether I get matched with good partners or not. It has kind of driven me more towards the single player games, although I enjoy some of the MP games.

You should do whatever feels right to you. Just understand that no one is ever too old for anime. Read some entries from this thread for more info on that. I think anime can be enjoyed alone. I've enjoyed it alone for years. Didn't diminish it in any way for me. That being said, I do like this forum. It's nice to chat with other fans.

Hey everyone! So, last year I bought my first VR platform and had lots of fun playing games on it. However, some VR games are multiplayer and the community out there has a tendency to be drunk, high, or in some other way not fun to play these games with. Does anyone else want to exchange screen names, games, and platforms? A good number of these games are cross-platform so maybe we could meet up for some online fun.

The pacing is different and the main character is very different in personality as well. If you need a "bad ass" in the lead...you'd never be happy ~sighs~ I also have played the games. I originally only had the first game on the PS2 but then I went through the trouble of tracking down the other three after they were no longer in print. I lucked out at got the third game shrinkwrapped at Walmart (the one here is pretty well known for having crazy rare finds during the winter months). If you do try to track them down, the series goes Infection -> Mutation -> Outbreak -> Quarantine. Then a separate series (the G.U. series) is out there as well. I played the first four but never got around to the GU games. I really enjoyed them (and there are some easter eggs to track down) and you can really dump some time into them as well. In all actuality, the story of the series is spread out between books, anime, and video games. You'd have to read, watch, and play them all to understand it all. Still, even without putting that much effort into the series, the video games can be taken as stand-alones without losing much in the series. The ability to transfer your save data from one game to the next is awesome as well. Most games that promise that do so only in name (usually with transferring avatar image data but then resetting stats and crap). dot Hack was awesome in that you transferred your stats, your friendships, your inventory, your everything to the next and the next game and kept building on it. The actually delivered on the promise. They are super valuable now. Makes me glad I invested in purchasing them (though I'd never give them up).

You'd be surprised how many SAO die-hard fans have never seen it. I generally recommend it to SAO fans when they are looking for something similar. I have found that a lot of SAO fans are relatively new to the genre (and a lot of times to anime, not all but a whole lot), so although I personally can't stand SAO, I am grateful to it for bringing in more people into the anime fandom. I have to say, it did some good, even if I didn't enjoy it so much. Every new person who learns to love anime is a good thing Some day, some of those negative stereotypes might fade away entirely. I personally think that a self-insert was to blame. It's so hard to avoid those in writings, but I have a feeling that at the heart of it, that's what happened. Then again, if it had been entirely like dot Hack, I would've been upset for a different reason haha...

Lol....and most SAO fans don't even know that dot Hack even exists. The parallels are unmistakable but I love dot Hack (don't love SAO). The original I hate to say it, but this happens a lot. An author is inspired by one story and models their own after their "muse".

I wasn't exactly a fan back in the old days but it seems to me that they are taking a page out of the Tomb Raider book. The Croft series was revitalized with Tomb Raider (and it brought a respectable much needed change to the series as far as Laura's personality is concerned. I think so anyways). I imagine this is their way of doing the same with the GoW series. I think it will turn out nicely and make far more of a personal impact to the audience than any of the previous games did.

Hmm...I'm 33, about to turn 34, and I don't feel "old" as an anime fan. I started well over 20 years ago (maybe more...back then I didn't outright identify it as anime) and yeah, some things have changed. Originally, I just watched whatever was on television. Then later, I would record it on VHS tapes (that I had to fight my siblings over...they'd tape over my stuff in an instant)...to those kids in the audience, VHS tapes are what the gas stations and convenience stores use to store their camera feed on Get's grainier with every re-recording lol.... I'd say I came from a small town. In truth, it was an okay sized one (not huge by any standards) but I lived in a neighborhood full of old people (retired...old....people...) so I was fairly isolated. Didn't bother hanging out with anyone from school (no point in cultivating any relationships, I had no desire to stay in the area after graduating). I'm pretty sure I was in the minority of people who actually enjoyed anime back then. So, I would buy VHS tapes from the local.....FYE? I don't remember the name of the store. Anyways, I had Yu Yu Hakusho and Tenchi Muyo on VHS. Escaflowne I remember convincing my mother to order from a Rightstuf catalogue (I have NO idea where I got the paper catalogue from. It was my first brush with Rightstuf. I still request paper catalogues from them.) for my birthday one year (and she did! Limited edition DVD boxset!). My parents were convinced I'd grow out of it (and gaming. They were certain that would fade with age). My sister thought I was "uncool". I honestly didn't care. Never have. One of the best parts of being me is my total disregard for what my family thinks lol... So, eventually I went off to college, dabbled (and lost my soul to) in MMORPGs which consumed two years of my life (thankfully, I quit, went through 2 months of withdrawal so bad I swore I'd never play another again without safeguards to keep me from becoming an MMO Zombie again), then started watching anime again. I think that started when I picked up a Studio Ghibli film at Best Buy. I knew it was anime, I hadn't really been watching any for quite some time...I think I got a bunch of Ghibli that month and did a marathon on the weekends. Would turn the tv up so loud my ears would hurt the next day. Good times Back then, streaming was unheard of really....I shopped for anime by visiting Best Buy and other DVD stores and browsing their selections. This got me buying blind but rarely failed me. I bought Starship Operators, Ah! My Goddess, Fate/Stay Night, Last Exile and others...all blind. I did eventually remember Rightstuf, but I'd only shop there on occasion (usually Black Friday or around my birthday). Still, I was spending the majority of my time on gaming. Throughout my life I've had an ebb and flow....anime would surge and gaming would ebb, then gaming would surge and anime would ebb.... It wasn't really until after I had my Doctorate that anime had another surge. I started streaming, going to cons (always had wanted to but hadn't had anyone to go with), keeping my eyes out for good deals, and gaming started to slowly slip away from me. Now, I'm at that juncture where gaming wants to surge back in and anime is starting to take a backseat again. It doesn't mean that I will stop collecting (ebbs in gaming didn't stop my from collecting but man do I have a backlog to play now lol), but as far as watching, most of my time will head towards gaming. My gameroom/anime cave is also situated upstairs and it is hot during the summer. It gives me headaches to play video games when it is so hot so I figue maybe I can start gaming in the fall/winter/early Spring and watching anime in the late Spring/Summer months lol....we'll see. For now, I'm thinking of playing some of those PS4 games that have been collecting dust lol... I might be at the precipice of an ebb, but it isn't because I think I'm too old. When I go to cons, I see lots of people my own age and some that are older. Even then, if I enjoy it, why should I be excluded by age? Never too old I do think however that my tastes have changed as I've grown older (not exactly an edge of fandom thing). But then, I know what I like now and I follow it. I love Sentai (they make most of my favorites, to the point that I'm willing to buy blind with them these days), I like certain genres, I don't like certain genres, some things I will not tolerate (but did tolerate when I was younger). Tastes change I like to think I'm getting the cream and others are getting skim milk

Ah, seemore....a lot of guys with your body type do that pink haired guy from Fairy Tail. The name escapes me, but I really think you'd make a good (ban? Van?) Silver haired red suit guy from Seven Deadly Sins. Wow, my name recall is pretty bad tonight. I need some sleep. Go with the Sins guy. You could pull it off. Few can pull him off well.
