  1. Welcome to the forums I hope you enjoy your stay!
  2. Howl's Moving Castle? Sophie unfortunately encounters the Witch of the Wastes in her hat shop who curses her to be an old woman...unfortunately, part of the curse is that you can't speak of it to anyone who isn't already aware of it. It'll just gum up your mouth to keep you from talking. She decides that she should run from her life as she couldn't tell anyone the truth of what happened to her (and she didn't want anyone to see) and she sets off into the Wastes (possibly to beat the old Witch of the Wastes over the head with a cane until she reversed the spell...it isn't indicated in the anime, only in the book) and comes across Howl's Moving Castle (which varies in size over the time of the story). She then forcefully moves in (her old lady personality is completely different from her timid hat-maker personality) after making a deal with a fire demon in the hearth.... Sound familiar?
  3. RPGs, strategy as well as horror, adventure, flight action, action/adventures, and survival games. I love RPGs, they make the majority of my collection, but most these days are only RPGs in name. Best horror game ever was Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem on the Gamecube. I'm honestly surprised that racing wasn't listed up there.
  4. I'm a Matsumoto fan so older styles don't bother me. Now older dubs did tend to be very loud.....especially where women are concerned, so like today, each should be judged by its own merits.
  5. Exactly! If I didn't jump like a startled cat, then I wasn't scared. I don't entirely agree here. Fear doesn't have to be due to a real threat. It is due to a perceived threat (real or imagined). Nightmares and a host of phobias show that. In that sense, anime can induce fear. Now most anime in the horror genre does not scare me but Another did a great job in building the atmosphere to make me feel very unsettled. And to this day I will not carry an umbrella up or down any stairs. I think back to that scene and immediately think, "there are less painful ways for a clutz like me to die." I rarely used umbrellas before, but now I have an excellent excuse lol. That scene horrified me, but didn't scare me. In truth, the horror genre is supposed to "horrify" you. That doesn't necessarily mean it will scare or gross you out. Somewhere along the way, American film makers became obsessed with gore and forgot what the point of a horror flick was meant to be.
  6. So, I know there is no way that I am the only person with an Anime Corner, Cave, or Space. Truthfully, over my many years, I have collected quite a bit of stuff....anywhere from statues (cheap $19.99 ones that no longer fit my space all the way up to a 700 some dollar one that I have had to move to keep my cats from impaling themselves on its sword), prints (giclees, lithographs, artist prints), original artwork (plushies for instance), wall scrolls and so on and I love putting them all up on my wall. And while most of my collection is video game related (I'm extremely picky on my anime swag - Unfortunately, most artists focus on One Piece, Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, DBZ, the main anime....most Anime I would buy prints of are rarely made by artists), I still have a few anime and comic book pieces. Anyways, put up your anime pad and flaunt your awesome! It doesn't matter what it is, or what really fills it up, it's your space! How did your space get to how it looks today? I know my space evolved over time (and doubtlessly will continue to change in the coming years) so what changes have you been making over the years? So, my Anime/Video Game Cave back in the day started when I was much younger. I bought a few keychains (that never seemed to last more than 2 weeks...I'm either very rough with my keys or they were super cheap!) and some wall scrolls, which I ended up thumbtacking to the walls (my father hates thumbtack holes LOL). When in highschool and then college...that's pretty much all you can afford. In my later college years, I started collecting different prints. I can't remember if it started with The Ilium or if it started with the Apprentice Crashes Star Destroyer....I just know it completely changed my buying habits from there on out. From there on out, I focused on prints, especially numbered limited edition prints (if the Artist signed it or if it came with a Certificate of Authenticity it was even better to me!). I still got some statues, but I maxed out around $90 on the cost... Oftentimes, I'd keep an eye out at a con for a new print. It was my last two years in grad school that I started professionally framing favorite prints. I'd save up spare cash for a few months so I could afford it whenever a good framing sale came around. At that time, I was framing prints with the intention of some day displaying them in my home (that I would eventually buy lol). I had a few statues sitting on my bookshelves at that time to spruce up my den. Many of my art in frames has remained wrapped up in brown paper, though not all.... Some have made it up onto walls. Others I have plans to change out from time to time with the ones I already have up (they are around the same size or identical in size to what I have up (part of my plan when framing them)) since my wallspace is pretty valuable up in my cave. For now, this is the art I have up for now that I have pictures of. I have more video game art dispersed about the room. I have plenty of video game statues and comic book statues up all around on shelves I've added to my room. My husband has his own collection down in his office space. He's a Batman fan so he has some great artist prints up in his office along with a curio full of statues he's collected over the years. Eventually, I'll get the rest of my room added up in here. These were the only photos I had already taken (and now I need to dust in there! It's a never ending battle.). So, I'll be adding some more pictures in a few more days. Anyone else got some anime or video game swag on display?
  7. Well, we all started out at zero....I think in another 3 years you'll have quite a few series behind you. . Keep watching and enjoying it. It isn't the number that matters, but whether you enjoyed the experience after all
  8. No idea. I know how many I own but no clue how many I've watched on Netflix and hulu or on tv. To this day, I still buy anime that strikes me as "really interesting looking" from the cover art only to realize halfway through that I saw it years and years ago. Happens with books too lol...I'm a mess!
  9. Welcome to the forums! It sounds like you have had a really varied experience throughout your life. I hope you enjoy your stay here. Many people started with Sailor Moon so you aren't alone there. That was actually the only anime that my sister enjoyed watching. Never could get her to try another one.
  10. Welcome to the forums O.G. It is nice to see another avid gamer here. My first experience was probably with the atari. It's hard to remember that far back. The console got fried in a lightning storm too do we only got to enjoy for a few months (my father was an avid ham radio fan and had gigantic antennas attached to the house. Nothing was safe in a storm.). Then someday we got the NES which eventually met the same fate (I saved that one from the trash, eventually fixing it when I was in college much later in my life) and just kept going from there. I too retired from the MMO front a long while ago. It took too much time in my life to maintain...though I haven't had the urge to return to it at all thankfully. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the forums!
  11. It depends really. If I'm browsing the Web on my laptop or tablet, WiFi is good enough, even for streaming. If I'm gaming, I use a MOCA connection instead. More affordable than installing ethernet in the house and very fast. Never lags.
  12. Wow, what a story. Well, this Cat's got your back. To start, from an objective standpoint, the "quit anime or else" approach she's using seems like a power play. I personally would not quit either, but I imagine there is a deeper story that explains a bit more of it. What were her previous boyfriends like? What were yours like? How much do you really know about each other? Have you put her on hold to watch anime before? What are her hobbies besides anime? Other than telling her she's really pretty, have you mentioned why these harem girls aren't actually your type, even though you enjoy the shows? If she's basing it completely off of looks, the fact that it's fiction versus reality won't get too far with her. These types of people base their own self worth with what society judges and nothing you say will change it. That particular problem needs counseling (similar to how a person with bulimia or anorexia needs extensive counseling to change their self image) and you might want to consider a power play of your own in recommending it. After all, anime are just stories put into an art medium. If you decide to try to recommend counseling, you may want to try couples counseling first. Since you have a history of mutual interest in anime and you have a history of trying to console her, a counseling session might help her see this is a problem of her own making. No one should be forced to be miserable in a relationship. It's not fair to you and it isn't fair to her either (even though she's creating her own misery). Though I seriously wonder if she has had eating disorders in the past. It would not surprise me.

    Games!!

Console, handheld, or pc? Can't recommend anything until I have a platform.
  14. Welcome to the forums. We're a pretty friendly community so I hope you enjoy hanging out with us! Any favorite anime you want to share with us?
  15. I do the same thing. Filling in the timeline, noting where major character development happens and how things are going to go down is something I do too when planning out a story. I think my main problem comes in dialogue of conflict. It's hard to construct a conflict between two people for me. It takes a lot of energy out of me but then most conflicts between people will. Still, going to keep on writing. Now that I've decided how I want to go about introducing this other group, I think it won't be long before I'm chugging along again on the novel. I used to write around 6 to 8 pages a day but if I have the energy and the inspiration (and some good Frank Sinatra music playing in the background...surprisingly, it helps me write) I can write around 16 to 22 pages in a day's time. It's rare that I have a good day though where the words flow out of me that fast. Getting in the mood and having things set (and having the room clean before I start...a messy room is a big distraction for me) really helps.
  16. You could read the manga for Pretear then watch the Anime and tell us which you liked best. They changed a lot for the anime so that the guy with the theme music could get the girl. It would make an interesting review too since you'd know exactly what was changed (and how it completely changes the story).
  17. So, like many of you out there, I do enjoy a good book and some day, I hope I can sit down and enjoy reading a book I wrote on my own. Does anyone else out there have a dream like that? I've been writing stories ever since I was in middle school and I am forever thankful that I had an AMAZING mom who took the time out of her busy days after work to sit down with me and teach me to read all by herself, just because I asked her to. Yep, I was reading before I even got into kindergarten and by the time I hit first grade, the teachers were parading me around to read to the other students (in hopes I would inspire them). Back then, reading to my fellow classmates, I was on a fifth grade level and my love of reading has only grown since (along with my level haha). Reading stories inspired me to excel and think and by the time I started writing my own, I had some pretty stiff convictions about what a good story would entail. Character development. No plotholes. A setting and world so vivid you could see it around you as you read the page. Like many people, I started out by writing fanfiction. In actuality, fanfiction is GREAT practice for writing an actual novel. It takes the world building component and the character building component out and lets you practice fleshing out a story. The rise and fall of the plot, the subtle changes in the characters as they grow through a story, and the sculpting of a conclusion, wrapping up the story in a tidy bow. Then, around five years ago, I decided to take the plunge and write my own story straight from my brain to the keyboard. To create that world in its entirety and sculpt the characters from the vision in my head. Sounds easier than it really is. Needless to say, I wrote a great first chapter. I've gone back and done some minor tweaking to it but that's where I'm stuck. I've introduced one major character and now I need to introduce another. The rest of the story I've jotted down in notes throughout the years. I've researched different types of weapons and armor (it's a medieval fantasy type story), I've written background biographies for the various characters in the story, the main villain has been augmented so many times she is no longer recognizable from her first incarnation. I know how I want it to start and I know where I want it to be, it's just the getting there that seems to be tripping me up now. That and life pretty much stole all my motivation for the past four years...but that story is a tragedy that no one wants to read haha... So, with all my extra time recently, I've started back writing. I've tweaked my novel's first chapter and now I've started on a new story. This new story is more of a "short story" meant to grease my writing gears again and man did I need it. In just a few short days I burned out 37 pages of material (yeah...short...I know...) and that was just chapter one of my short story. I could tell with every four to five pages that my writing was improving as well. I think at this point I might be back to the skill of writing that I stopped with last time. And now...the delimna....to continue writing my short story (and hopefully finish it...was planning four chapters).....or instead work on my old novel. I think I've finally figured out the proper way to proceed (I need an actual introduction of the main group and protagonist before my other protagonist meets them...I could never figure out what was missing before but I suddenly see it for what it is now.). I've already gone back in and revised the new story's first 20 or so pages..... Decisions....decisions.... Doesn't help that now when I fall asleep at night I dream of two different stories meandering about in my head.... I might have to just drink some shots tonight and flip a coin to decide on this one. Wish me luck, guys!
  18. Have you tried an anime-planet search yet? If you put in the tags "magical girl" and "high school student" it'll bring up about 3 pages to sift through. If you recognize one of the girls, you might have found your anime.
  19. I told you there was a video out there using parts of K-on that wasn't K-on lol..... I think it has ensnared many an anime fan in its grips. I honestly wonder what all the different anime used in that video were. Hehe, you had the same response as a friend of mine who watched it. Sorry for laughing, but it is funny how so many anime fans can be alike.
  20. Any way you can share the link to the video? It sounds like K-on...supposedly there is a heavily edited video with things like that in it (that might not happen in the actual anime - I've heard this but never seen K-on so I can't verify or deny it). I'm sure anyone who has seen the anime could verify it for you though. I don't think that the bus accident is real. That might have been part of the edit.
  21. Aww, I had hoped you were a Simpsons fan. You have been virtuous in your life and you are given one wish that will come true as a reward. What do you wish for?
  22. Watched Howl's Moving Castle twice in the past few days (cause I love it). Now I'm reading the original novel it was based on and man are things different! I still like it but they changed a lot. The book is definitely better, so far anyways.
