So, in a similar fashion to an earlier thread of mine (shamelessly linked here for anyone who wants to check it out and vote Click Here for the Post! on Magical Girls), I've been wondering about all of your thoughts about the Slice of Life genre. What is really Slice of Life to you? Do you enjoy or dislike them? And why? Which ones are your favorites, and why did it stand out amongst the crowd? What was your first Slice of Life? To me, Slice of Life is a big change in pace from what I usually enjoy watching. I've only ever collected a handful for my library but have doubtlessly enjoyed them (even the ones that I thought were a bit slow and strange!). I tend to consider them as Slice of Life's whenever I find myself unable to label them as anything else...which probably means my grasp of Slice of Life as a genre needs more development haha... For the most part, I've enjoyed the ones I've seen. My favorite would probably be HaNaYaMaTa with its color and music. I suppose having a plot to follow helped (I get lost in the plotless ones lol). My first (that I finished) was Non Non Biyori which is impressive since I spent most of the first season trying to figure out what the plot was LMAO. The first I started was Hanasaku Iroha (which I only had half of the first season in my possession at the time). So, what are all of your thoughts of the genre? And don't be shy guys I think Slice of Lifes tend to end up in a forgotten group. Maybe it is because they aren't as flashy as some other genres.

@efaardvark I know how you feel! Mnecraft and 7 Days to Die pull me right back in everytime lol

Well, there are apparently bars that specialize in it... you are supposed to down a portion then follow it with a shot of whiskey. It's an aquired taste or so I've heard.

I would say that it is a great place to hang out. It is one of the only places I can really talk about anime and not get any strange looks so I appreciate the forums greatly. Optic is always working to improve the site too (unlike a previous site that I joined years ago where the co-owners fought each other publicly on closing or maintaining the site) and for the most part, we don't seem to have any "holier than thou" masses of people kicking the newer members down so the atmosphere is really welcoming. We have real discussions without clawing at each others faces which.....is amazing....anywhere on the internet these days... I would be very sad to see this place go. It really is a peaceful place.

So, what is the grossest Japanese food you've ever heard of in an anime? I think for me it would have to be Pickled Squid (or fish) Guts. Considered Stewed Pigs Feet but honestly, I'm sure a Southerner would be able to make that taste good lol.... I kind of wish that Chopped would do an episode using Pickled Squid Guts....I just want to see the judges eat it LOL...

Has the waifu/husbando thing always been there? And the trophy tab too? I really don't remember the trophy tab. And that looks like a trophy under @Optic's profile too.... I think there have been many changes in the past 6 months....

That is my current time devotion to thf console. @Roxeg

Hmmm..... Atari NES (5%) Sega Genesis SNES Sega Dreamcast N64 PS2 Xbox Nintendo Gamecube Wii Xbox 360 PS3 Nintendo DS PS4 (95%) I bring out my older consoles from time to time to play but try to keep them stored if possible. I have enough cords with the PS4 to worry about as it is. Just depends on my mood. Currently I am playing Blue Marlin on my NES when I feel nostalgic. I have to take pictures of the save codes with my phone. Wish I did something similar when I was a kid lol....

My husband is EMS...he'd just shake his head and mutter under his breath lol I do hope wireless headsets are on the way. I'd sell my current headset for a wireless one in a heartbeat. I have a bad disk in my neck and currently with the wire being on one side of the headset (dragging my head down and forwards on a tilt when using it) it is a quick trip to several days of pain in my neck, arms, and teeth, stiffness, numb shoulders, face and tongue and bouts of nausea. I've taken to taping the wires to my shirt or my pants when I use it to keep the wires leading up to my head slack enough to prevent the drag. Just the whole set up takes too much time and effort to use it regularly right now. That and I have to put a chair practically on top of my tv to get it to reach. Maybe a longer HDMI cable is what I need for now. I swear, Sony seems to do this every single time. Maybe Japanese sit close to their TVs so it doesn't bother them but the charging cables and everything else for any PlayStation device seems to always be too short for American setups.

Just played through in the last 24 hours Until Dawn on my PS4. Did great keeping folks alive until about 3am (errr...realtime...I think it was 5am or so in the game) when my energy levels just dropped (as did my desire to be cautious lol). I went ahead and finished it last night then I replayed from where I was last night at 3am to the end this morning and managed to keep everyone alive. Note to self....any game that requires you to keep the controller still...do not allow a cat in your lap while playing these games LOL.... Death by cat... >_> Oops.... Fun game, nice spooky atmosphere....would've probably freaked me out if I was wearing my VR gear instead of just watching the tv across the room. They need extension cords for VR headsets. They are not long enough!

Beocat replied to Wodahs's topic in Anime Discussion
Naotsugu...Log Horizon.... I'd link him on the page for you but I'm on my phone which doesn't work as well as my laptop. -
Best OVA you have ever watched and which anime it was from.

I myself am not a harem fan, but Tenchi is fairly well done (not all the Tenchis mind you, but the OVA definitely is). I don't completely write off a genre ever. Man...if I wrote off harems entirely I'd probably have to give up half of the anime out there as it is so incredibly pervasive. Do I wish he'd just pick a girl and get on with life? Yes! Will I just have to live with him forever being a virgin? Probably.... LOL Still, the story is quite interesting...if you can manage to differentiate all the different timeline/universes. If only they had maintained the OVA's storyline and quality early in the series and not diverged into random plotlines...it could have been epic. I still get excited over new Tenchi series. Got to get around to watching the newest one though. -

I'd probably have to say the first season of Tenchi Muyo (which was OVA). The second season....sucked...and I don't think it was the fact that I had to switch to Japanese because of the bad voice actor they placed for Ryoko. The first season of Tenchi always brings a smile to my face. The first harem I ever saw and enjoyed... it was stellar quality, especially in those days and I think it has stood the test of time. I wish it hadn't taken so long for them to get around to continuing the story but...meh...that's what happens I guess. I wonder...did you mean OVA as in "movie retelling/continuing/adding to the story"? [mal type=anime id=539] -
Welcome officially to the forums Aki I'm glad you found anime paradise

Well, after seeing the Starfield teaser, I'm ready for Bethesda to really do it I can't wait!

I have no real preference. If the dub is good, I'll listen and enjoy. If not, I just switch over to the sub. That being said, if I started on the sub, it is difficult to switch to the dub. Snow White with the Red Hair being an example...horrible dub...to me anyways. Glad my first watch was on the sub. Easier to go from dub to sub than sub to dub for sure. I have noted that on new shows (like Otome Yokai...) that I haven't seen before, if I am web searching or working during them I seem to know what is being said before I look up to read it. Apparently, my brain is learning Japanese from anime without me. If I ever visit Japan, I'm going to sound like an anime character...
-
Hmmmm.... maybe try Big O! It has a good dub. The first half is episodic while the latter half is more storyline arc. Good classic. I like to think of it as Japan's version of Batman. If you are willing to step out of the fighting genres, there are plenty more. Ah! My Goddess being one that is hard not to love. Log Horizon has a good dub and might yet get an ending now that the author has started writing again. Moribito is one of my favorites and Psycho PASS is good if you are looking for something newer. Bodacious Space Pirates has a great dub too but can be a bit comedic at times.

Any genre preference she might be interested in?

Hadn't heard of it yet but I've been wanting to go to Elsweyr forever... I know lots of people love Argonians for their underwater breathing abilities, but I've always played Khajit because I can't live without nightvision LOL A friend of mine always plays as a Nord or a Breton... Each to our own I guess.

Not a sequel and not a remake... I believe that they are different versions of the same story. I think that the movie got a pretty poor reception. If I remember correctly, it was made after the series. I went into it with a fairly open mind (and knowing most people were against the movie) so on its own I didn't think it was bad, but it doesn't give you the feel good feelings that the series does lol.... It isn't meant to be taken in direct context with the series. The manga may have had alternate timelines and endings as well so it makes sense in my opinion for the animation to do something similar. The manga I've never read but I heard that from part of the controversy surrounding the movie from years ago.

Escaflowne was actually the first DVD boxset I ever owned. I think I got it for Christmas (somehow I had a rightstuf paper catalogue and managed to convince my mom to buy it from the catalogue ). It might be the first Isekai.... I'm not sure about that. It is probably one of the best (if only Alan Shizar didn't exist....grrrrr) but I might be biased. I forgot maybe Twelve Kingdoms. I didn't finish it myself (wish I had) but I'm pretty sure it had a solid conclusion. Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure had a pretty solid ending as well. If I make a thread about it, it'll be in a few days. I've been procrastinating a lot of work that needs to get done and I'll have to actually make a list (listing and remembering the reasons off the top of my head tends to be very fragmented) and polish it up. ***If you do decide to watch Escaflowne, I advise starting with the TV series and following up with the movie later. The movie is pretty fast and can be fairly confusing if you are not familiar with the series. The characters have vastly different personalities as well between the two formats. Watching the series will give you a good foundation on who is who before you watch the movie (which I thought was a bit rushed).
-
The ones that pop in my head are Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Spirited Away. I don't really blame the genre. Bad things tend to happen to authors. I could write a thread about it...all the unfinished anime out there.

Welcome to the forums. I wouldn't give up on your friends though. They just haven't seen the right anime for them yet Even my sister likes some series and that is saying something.
